Morning all!

I'm excited to be buying a coverless duvet for myself. The boys have one and their brilliant.

What tog should I get? I really don't think I want multiple duvets!!

I bought one last winter and used it on top of my normal duvet. I like it. It's cotton not polyester, though the inner is polyester but so are all my normal duvets because I'm allergic to feathers.

I have, however, lost it though. Looked for it the other day - no idea where it is. Answers on a post card please.

Oh, also glad to know I'm not the only one who puts my feet inside the cover and pops the buttons off, or who simply cannot put the duvet cover on, the number of times I've slept in a literally stripped bed because I've lost the ability to do this chore is incredible.

I've washed all my duvets this week's, the 10.5tog king fits in the washing machine.

I struggle with getting large quilt covers on now that I have to do it myself - I have some mobility issues. I'm pretty shameless about seconding visitors to help but I've also found the freezer clip tip helpful when nobody is around. I clip the corner of the quilt into the corner of the cover with one of those plastic freezer bag clips on each side and then I can pull the cover over the rest. Its still difficult but its doable.

I'd never heard of coverless duvets before this thread. I don't use feathers and I can see why they might be helpful for small children and spillages or specific sensory needs. However I can't see how washing and drying a double or kingsize duvet every week is easier than the chore of changing the covers and I feel like I'm missing something!

Don't they go really flat and "floopy" with all the washing and drying? I would definitely want cotton covers but also a lot more than 4.5 Togs so not sure if they could work for me.

That's fine you don't like man made fibres for you @givemeasunnyday

But there's nothing yucky about them.

As for them ending up in the ocean, the filling is made from recycled PET bottles. Better to reuse and recycle our waste products, no?

Still ends up in the ocean, but you do whatever you like - I'm not trying to force my views on others, but one is not better than the other, either way.

@givemeasunnyday Absolutely! Everyone likes different things. It's just nicer if you don't say yuk! if someone else makes different choices. That comes across as pretty rude.

Don't worry. I won't put my duvet in the ocean 😁
On a side note. Pretty sure the one I want is cotton

Arent they a nightmare to wash and dry? They sound like an environmental nightmare. Duvet covers really arent that much of a bother.

That's fine - but as often happens on these threads I wasn't the first person who said yuk!, but I get the flack for it. Polyester and other man-made fibres really are very bad for the environment.

I don’t understand. Is this not just literally a duvet without a cover on it? How is it any different or easier?

Clymene · 03/09/2023 02:04

@givemeasunnyday maybe you were the straw that broke the camel's back.

bellac11 · 03/09/2023 09:15

I say yuk to polyester, it seems to be everywhere, horrible fabric.

No, it's not a duvet without a cover. It's sewn into a cover. The outer of a normal duvet is thin and sort of unfinished. The cover on these is thicker and properly sewn, plus they can have patterns or weave (mine is waffle). It's also often cotton, whereas most of my duvets are poly cotton outers, polyester inside (or micro fiber).

I don't like polyester against my skin, so tend not to buy dresses or tops made of it. Though most bras seem to be made of it. And I do wear tights in winter.

For duvets, the inner doesn't bother my much. I have one wool duvet but find it too stiff and hot. So the rest are micro fiber (polyester) because I'm allergic to feathers (can't afford a silk one). But the outer on my coverless one is cotton, as is all my bed linen.

I love mine.

We all have them.

It's on the line now. It will be dry in an hour or so and then back in the bed.

After holiday where we had a duvet each on a large bed, I'm seriously thinking of doing this at home. Does anyone have say, a coverless double duvet each on a king size bed?

Not coverless but we have two single duvets on a super king bed and during the day a bedcover to make it look neat and tidy.
