Morning all!

I'm excited to be buying a coverless duvet for myself. The boys have one and their brilliant.

What tog should I get? I really don't think I want multiple duvets!!

@Earhell Yes - we have the cotton waffle grey one in king size (other rooms just have the basic night owl but I wanted a more 'luxurious' looking one).
It's amazing. Washed and dried in around 3 hours, no fighting to put back on the bed - just throw it on! I absolutely love it. It's very lightweight too but very cosy, genius!

Deffo get one.

I thought a coverless duvet Was called a quilt?

I'm another one who can't understand the point of one. From an eco point of view they must be terrible. I wouldn't have room to dry 3 of them every week!

Comefromaway · 01/09/2023 14:06

I bought one from M & S when my autistic son with sensory issues started refusing to put cotton covers on his duvet. A normal duvet doesn't wash very well, this one does and it is lovely and soft. 5 years later it is still going strong. It is 10.5 tog.

Unfortunately M & S discontinued the adult ones so I then bought two double ones for dd and ds to take to university. They are great although not quite as soft as the M & S one, it is easy for them to wash and dry at uni and easy to transport them. Dd supplements hers with her weighted blanket.

Dd is hypermobile and ds has fine motor issues too and these are much easier for them to handle. They are very quick drying, much quicker than drying cotton duvet covers.

They are different to a quilt. Quilts are much too thin to be used as a main duvet in winter.

3 words I’m not fully understanding 😂

Coverless duvet
Comforter
Counterpane

EH??!

Wait until you hear that Night Owl has changed its name and is now called Night Lark 😂

Unless you have a miniature washing machine not sure why it didn’t fit. My 10.5 tog double fits very easily in my 8kg washing machine

No my machine is 9kg I think. It does say machine washable so it should but I can't get it in, it physically doesn't fit. I can't even get it in, never mind close the door. I'm not sure of the tog, but it's a thick double.

Oldraver · 01/09/2023 17:22

I bought one for DS as he hates the whole changing duvet thing and it does look lovely

Its king size and wont fit in the washing machine

TheYadaYada · 01/09/2023 17:34

I’m quite interested.

Are they quick to tumble dry? We don’t peg out washing, so I’d want to know it wasn’t taking any more tIme each week than the regular bedding.

Clymene · 01/09/2023 17:42

My son has the cotton waffle one. He's autistic and hates duvet covers and duvets because they're an uneven weight. Much cleaner and quicker than 'normal' duvets

greengreengrass25 · 01/09/2023 17:46

I'll stick to duvet covers

I like a variety of covers

Comefromaway · 01/09/2023 17:48

Yes, very quick to tumble dry

pompomdaisy · 01/09/2023 17:50

Got excited about one then before I had actually seen one. Disappointing. They look like something my granny would have put on the bed!

CupOfCoffeePlease · 01/09/2023 17:51

So people are washing 4 whole duvets a week?! Or 2 and a double ?!

Or are you using 2 sheets like Americans do/we used to to keep the coverless duvet clean?

Sounds minging Or a heck of a lot to wash each week.

OhcantthInkofaname · 01/09/2023 17:56

I guess this could be a strange question to ask here: What is a coverless duvet?

Is this simply what we in the US call a comforter or a quilt? I have never had a duvet.

TheThingIsYeah · 01/09/2023 18:00

This thread has to be a wind up.

People are prepared to fork out for coverless duvets, shove them in the washing machine one at a time, then tumble dry them all because they can't be arsed to take the covers off? Jesus wept.

If that's the case then good for you, but with all that energy usage I don't want to hear any whinging about the cost of electricity bills or climate change.

Comefromaway · 01/09/2023 18:05

Many of us have said we use them due to issues such as autism, adhd, hyper mobility or other physical issues so I find your comment very abelist.

cupofcoffee , I change bedding every 2-3 weeks. When Ds is at Uni I suspect he changes it even less. There is no difference in the amount of energy you use wahing and drying a cover less duvet as there is washing any other bedding.

BoobyDazzler · 01/09/2023 18:12

I can’t see the point really, It takes maybe 2 minutes to take a duvet cover off and the same to put one back on and you can chop and change duvet covered according to season - I’ve got lovely flannelette ones in winter and silky ones for the summer.

TheThingIsYeah · 01/09/2023 18:14

Comefromaway, My teenage son is autistic. So you can cut that abelist nonsense.

And to your second point there is a massive difference in energy usage between washing and drying a duvet cover and actual duvet.

But anyway, what bedding you have is of no concern to me as I'm not that riled about potential climate change.

Quite. Absolutely shocking (well I don't expect much from mn when it comes to disablism so maybe shocking is the wrong word. Disappointingly predictable perhaps)

dearanon · 01/09/2023 18:26

I've thought about doing this.

YellowReadingLamp · 01/09/2023 18:28

Fine bedding company ones are AMAZING. I originally got them for my boys and was then jealous so had to get one for myself. All duvet covers and regular duvets are now gone!

drearydear · 01/09/2023 18:31

What are they stuffed with? Doesn't the stuffing take a while to dry?

We had something similar in storage years ago. Stuffed with feathers, covered in satin fabric, thinner than a standard duvet. Eiderdown I think

drearydear · 01/09/2023 18:32

I think my DD would possibly like one.

Rockfordpeach · 01/09/2023 18:34

I work in a care home and sleep in three nights a week so bought myself one for those nights and I really like it. Prefer my home bedding though if I had to choose. I got mine from Amazon

Puffypuffin · 01/09/2023 18:35

I have two for DS and they are fantastic. Love being able to just shove it in the washing machine every week.
