Morning all!

I'm excited to be buying a coverless duvet for myself. The boys have one and their brilliant.

What tog should I get? I really don't think I want multiple duvets!!

We have them on all beds, and dd took one to university. Some family and friends have bought them too since staying at ours with them.

For normal times we have Night Owl ones, in tog 4.5. Our house is usually fairly warm and dd and I both 'run warm' generally. Dh and I have a 20 tog one for the winter.

They do have a slightly smooth feel to the touch but aren't slippery or anything like a sleeping bag type material.

They wash really well in a washing machine. A king size tog 20 fits in or washing machine.

To dry we just throw it over the bannister after washing in the morning. It dries very quickly and is dry well before bedtime.

We've had them for years now.

How long do they take to dry?

Do you need two?

Ours dries during the day over the bannister.
They can go in a tumble dryer if you prefer.
We only have one per bed, except for me and dh who also have a warmer tog for the winter.

I've been entertained to see US Influencers who have always had them (and presumably sparked this interest in patterned comforters over here) are now getting all excited about putting removable covers on their comforters because they're so easy to wash and dry and you just change the cover instead of having to wash the whole thing.

In other words, they're excited about buying duvet covers.

Bought these from Asda for my Dds this Summer, we like them very much but l don't think we will use them in the Winter tbh.

Qilin · 01/09/2023 18:42

Obviously you could just hang outside - I don't as we don't have a washing line/airer outside. Friends do though.

We wash them approx monthly (I'm not getting into tone whole how often you wash bedding malarkey, life's too short - for weekly washing or the 'debates' tbh)

I can't remember the last time I actually washed a duvet itself, when I had duvets. So a cover less duvet is much better here in that sense.

Wait until you hear that Night Owl has changed its name and is now called Night Lark 😂

WTAF

Gonna have to start on the wine now. Reading this site is enough to do your nerves in some days. 😂

I don't understand the hype. Much easier to change duvet covers and wash them. I assume these coverless ones need to dry in a tumble dryer - so lots of energy usage.

I like good quality covers, linen or washed cotton so coverless are not for me.

Fair enough not wanting one. Each to their own.

But how is it easier to change a duvet cover (take cover off, wash it, dry it, put cover back on - always a faff - and then make bed) easier than washing a cover less duvet (wash, dry, make bed)? That's before you consider if, and how much, you should wash the diver inside the cover.

I thought I’d give the idea the benefit of the doubt so I’ve just had a look at night owl , they’re pretty ugly to my mind !

Ours is just plain grey.
I never liked patterned duvet covers anyway!

CupOfCoffeePlease · 01/09/2023 18:46

See I don't think I'd wash a whole coverless duvet every week (X 3 in our house, so that's 3 nights a week presuming only one fits in a machine) .

And the thought of leaving it 4 weeks without a wash is a bit gross. Surely if you're going 4 weeks then you put a top-sheet in between and change that when you change the bottom sheet.

This is literally going backwards to pre-duvet invention!

And I am still amazed duvet covers haven't caught on big time in America but even then they use top and bottom sheets.

CupOfCoffeePlease · 01/09/2023 18:48

Well you can put several duvet covers in one wash. You can't do that with several duvets (I assume!?) With a family you'd be washing a duvet every other morning to leave time to dry, and to get through 3 or 4 a week.

I thought a coverless duvet Was called a quilt?

I'm another one who can't understand the point of one. From an eco point of view they must be terrible. I wouldn't have room to dry 3 of them every week!

It's probably not eco friendly to wash all bedding weekly anyway tbh.

We do one load for the bedding, inc the duvet, per bed. I did that pretty much beforehand when I had a cover. Just means the load is slightly heavier.

Redruby2020 · 01/09/2023 18:51

So do they have a print/colour?
I saw some kids ones only the other day in Aldi 4.5 tog with different characters on, so I immediately thought oh what a good idea. But then thought oh yeah, my DC has a 4.5 just that it has a duvet cover to go on it, so I guess it does take away the faffing around with that.

I like the sound of the Slumberdown one.

I'm glad someone else gets it.

Oh well, not me paying the electricity bills for all that tumble dryer usage!

loobylou10 · 01/09/2023 19:03

@PhilMitchellsleatherbomber washing 2 each week. Spare only when someone has used it. Not a big deal honestly, they dry in a couple of hours.

Oh right... I didnt realise people wash their duvets weekly tbh. I do all the bedding in 1 load every week (1 double, 2 singles). The actual duvets get done every 6 months ish.

CupOfCoffeePlease · 01/09/2023 19:12

Yep duvet covers are an easy wash in together.

Washing an actual duvet x 3 means a crazy amount of washing! (As much as I'm up for making life easier this just isn't it unless you're not washing the thing you're sleeping next to for 4 weeks as pp above 😬.)

Timeturnerplease · 01/09/2023 19:34

We have them on all three beds (ours and both DDs). We both work full time, and I work evenings too (teacher), so quite frankly the time saved faffing about putting duvet covers on is absolutely worth it.

Qilin · 01/09/2023 20:09

Millicent - I never washed my actual duvets all the time. It's the coverless cover I wash.
And that gets done every 3-4 weeks.

I don't do any extra loads. It goes in the bedding wash - our old duvet cover was really quite bulky I guess.

I don't tumble dry our duvets. They just go over the bannister for a few hours whilst we are doing other stuff.

Qilin · 01/09/2023 20:12

Yes - not scored to say that my duvet/duvet cover is 3-4 weeks, not weekly. I'm clean - I shower daily, at least once, and wash my hair daily. I don't really sweat much, and I wear PJs.

But hey, I've lived a healthily life for 50 years doing so, so can't be that bad. Much better for the environment than washing so often too 😀

But MN is always obsessed with washing every item daily, after one use. 🤷‍♀️

girlygirly · 01/09/2023 20:46

Oh, is that a new name for an eiderdown?

It literally takes a couple of minutes to put a duvet cover on! If you don't have time to do that maybe you should be re-assessing how busy your lives are.

Basically, except that eiderdowns have feathers in them and these seem to be made of some man-made fibre (polyester?). Yuk.

Chocolatebuttonanyone · 01/09/2023 21:26

My DS has one as he somehow wriggles the duvet out if the cover at night otherwise. No idea how he does it but is very wriggly at night.
Only just bought it but so far, so good.

HauntedPencil · 01/09/2023 21:45

Are there any ones that aren't £70?
