I'm going to buy a coverless duvet!

Morning all!

I'm excited to be buying a coverless duvet for myself. The boys have one and their brilliant.

What tog should I get? I really don't think I want multiple duvets!!

Are these coverless duvets substantially thinner and lighter than normal ones? My king-size 9 tog one doesn't fit in my washing machine so gets taken for a service wash at the end of winter. If a coverless one isn't lighter/thinner it also won't fit so I'd have to take it to the launderette every week or two? If it does fit, as a PP said it won't fit anything else in the washing machine, unlike my duvet cover which fits pillow cases and some towels.

hennybeans · 01/09/2023 10:02

I have them for all our duvets in the house. I first got some for the dc because changing three dc duvet covers is a pain. They wash so well and dry in the tumble dryer in about 15 minutes. Amazing.

So then I bought a king size one for our bed. I was a little hesitant because it is polyester and I usually only buy cotton bedding. But it’s great. However, my king size year round tog coverless duvet does not fit properly in my 10kg washing machine! I can get it in and turn it on but there isn’t enough room for a proper wash and rinse so it comes out manky. So now I’m back to putting a cover on my coverless duvet so that I can wash it. Oh well.

My son has one, they’re great. I keep meaning to get myself one and I definitely will. I have a weighted blanket which I love but after washing it I need the assistance of Eddie Hall to pick it up!

I have one for the guest bedroom- means I can strip the bed or remake it in minutes. It dries pretty quickly as well.

christophefoyle · 01/09/2023 10:14

Following with interest.

Would a double fit in my 7kg washing machine?

100% polyester. No thanks.

Oh good grief - no, just no!!

hdbs17 · 01/09/2023 10:47

I don't see the appeal.

I can get all the duvet covers, sheets and pillow cases washed in one load, dry quickly either on the line or tumble and back on the beds in a couple of hours.

Surely if you as a house full of them, it'd be one wash per bed? And you still need to change the sheet and pillowcase so you may as well change a duvet cover too....

Itsnotrightbutitsok · 01/09/2023 10:54

How often are people washing them?

And how long does it actually take to wash a whole family’s worth?

As the PP said surely it’s one duvet per wash, so if you’ve got 5 of them that’s hours of washing not including drying.

How is that easier than pulling off an old cover and putting a new one on?

You don’t even need to wash and dry the old one straight away, like you would a cover less duvet.

EstieGreenwood · 01/09/2023 10:55

Ah, the American comforter. It’s nice not to have the annoying task of trying to get the duvet cover on perfectly, but falls short when it comes time to wash the thing.

I thought I’d give the idea the benefit of the doubt so I’ve just had a look at night owl , they’re pretty ugly to my mind !

Heronatemygoldfish · 01/09/2023 11:09

I have two Night Owls (summer and winter) and I adore them. The feel is silky to me (though I appreciate other viewpoints!) and I hate smelly dribbled-on normal ones that take ages to dry and fray when you wash them.

I bought my first because I'm a comedy routine when I try and put a cover on any duvet. But the washability is why I got the second.

Nothing to stop people putting a cover on one if they only buy it for the ease of cleaning! Grin

I love bedding and changing my duvet covers (while a pain) is a quick way to make the room feel fresh and new. Why would you want to see the same thing all the time?

Surely anyone who wants a change can just add a duvet cover on the coverless duvet cover if they wish…
Personally, changing duvet covers is just one job I can discount from the long list of things I need to do.

How is changing a duvet cover so much harder than washing and drying a duvet in one day? It takes hardly any time.

I won't be getting one for the simple reason that I prefer feather/down and wool duvets, and if they need cleaning they go to the dry cleaners. I don't change the duvet covers very often either as I'm not in the UK and we generally use two sheets here.

I bought a 4.5tog to take camping in France this summer. I loved it and am tempted to buy more.
My only slight concern is how well a 10.5 tog would fit in my washing machine and how long it would take to dry.

Was just thinking about that too. I would need a king size, I just about get my teddy duvet cover in the machine. Would probably have to take a trip to the launderette.

Saverage · 01/09/2023 11:21

I'd consider a lightweight one, not if they are polyester though. A 10 tog one though? No way, what a waste of electricity to have to wash that by itself every week.

loobylou10 · 01/09/2023 11:25

Do it!! They are fabulous - we have them on all beds. Treated ourselves to the waffle cotton one for our bed. Best decision ever.

loobylou10 · 01/09/2023 11:26

And my 10.5 tog king size fits in our washer not trouble. It's a large drum.

caramond · 01/09/2023 11:27

I have one as my summer duvet on its 3rd summer now. I don't have a tumble drier and the coverless duvet dries on the airer quicker than a cotton duvet cover would so it's great. I also sometimes use it on the sofa in the coldest months as it's warmer than a blanket.

calyxx · 01/09/2023 11:28

How can it be easier to wash a whole duvet than a duvet cover? Who washes duvets more than occasionally and why?

No messing with duvet covers. It has its pros and cons but I like them and it fits into my washer.

GigiAnnna · 01/09/2023 11:40

I'd advise against it. My son had a double one. It didn't fit in the washing machine so had to go the laundrette. If you normally change your bedding once a week, you wouldn't be able to do that unless you take it to be washed.

How many duvets are you washing and drying every week?

Unless you have a miniature washing machine not sure why it didn’t fit. My 10.5 tog double fits very easily in my 8kg washing machine

Earhell · 01/09/2023 13:45

@loobylou10 I'm looking at the cotton waffle one from night owl. Is that the one you have?

I'm struggling to understand why people aren't understanding how it's quicker? I'm not planning on handwashing it. It'll take seconds to throw in the machine. Seconds to hang to dry and then straight back on the bed. How is that not an advantage?

Surely a coverless duvet is just what the Americans call a comforter? It’s basically a new word for a counterpane.

3 words I’m not fully understanding 😂

Coverless duvet
Comforter
Counterpane

EH??!
