I'm going to buy a coverless duvet!

Morning all!

I'm excited to be buying a coverless duvet for myself. The boys have one and their brilliant.

What tog should I get? I really don't think I want multiple duvets!!

I can't imagine anything worse than a damp king sized duvet draped over my bannisters to dry. I'm not convinced it would fit in my washing machine anyway. I don't find changing a cover that much hassle anyway.

Specialtoes · 01/09/2023 08:35

I expect it's me, but I've never been able to get a duvet cover on properly, I always end up with bits of cover that don't have any duvet in them, not at all like a hotel duvet.

I've just bought a 4.5 tog one, thinking I'll use a pretty blanket with it when it's cold.

I expect it to be life changing Grin

Clefable · 01/09/2023 08:36

It's more about the cleanliness for me. I find duvets get a stale smell under the cover when they're only washed once a year or something (and honestly I think a lot of people never wash their traditional duvets). But the taking less time to make the bed is def a bonus! Especially as I have a super king. Wrestling with covers is a gigantic pita.

Really? You can't imagine anything worse than a damp duvet on the banisters? Losing a limb? Being attacked by 100000 giant flying ants? Shagging Nigel Farage??

In fairness I don't ever hang clothes up inside to dry in general as I don't like it plus the dog steals them.

Going against the grain, but we are not fans of ours.

DH and I have one each (we each have a queen sized duvet on a super-king bed). They are slippery and shiny. I have to put another duvet over the top of mine because I can't get cosy under the coverless one. They are also a bit grim to look at. They looked pretty on the website, not so much in RL.

givemeasunnyday · 01/09/2023 08:41

Sorry, I just don't get this idea. It's so easy to wash a duvet cover, why on earth would anyone want an actual duvet that they have to wash? I'm not in the UK and haven't seen any for sale where I live, but even if they were I'll stick with my down and wool duvets, and their covers.

Discwriter · 01/09/2023 08:44

Yes, it's called a comforter where I'm from and a bit old fashioned really. My mom loves it, I prefer a duvet with covers.

PuppyMonkey · 01/09/2023 08:45

I got a Night Owl one but the texture is really smooth/slimy and it brings on terrible hot flushes when I use it. Gave it to DD instead. Can you get pure cotton covered ones?

Have to say they’re a breeze to wash though - mine seems to come out of the washing machine nearly dry and hang it up for an hour it’s good to go.

Ostryga · 01/09/2023 08:52

Gosh the drama about a duvet 😂 this is peak mumsnet surely.

I have mine because I have ADHD and one of the worst jobs is changing bedding. Just having to chuck the whole thing in and tumble dry it so it’s clean in 2 hours has saved my sanity.

DiscoBeat · 01/09/2023 08:59

We have the Night Owl ones for the guest beds for occasional use but I wouldn't want to be using it every night - prefer a natural breathable product.

Earhell · 01/09/2023 09:00

@Ostryga we are a neurodivergent household here too. And it's a choice between coverless duvet or wash bedding every six months. I know my preference 😂 I'm very surprised this thread has been so popular

See this makes perfect sense to me. I have suspected ADHD and while duvet covers aren’t a thing for me I understand the struggle! Now I understand what I was missing and I can comfortably move on knowing that they’re not for me but are a game-changer for some 💐

We used to call these eiderdowns when I was little.

(Old gimmer alert) 👵

FFS 🙄 There's always one...

FoodFann · 01/09/2023 09:12

100% polyester. No thanks.

KnickerlessParsons · 01/09/2023 09:13

When I was young a counterpane was the blanket you put on top as the last layer of your bedding. Ours had fancy silky edges.

We called that an eiderdown. It was like a duvet really but probably needed as well as blankets on those days because houses weren't heated, certainly not upstairs.

Itsnotrightbutitsok · 01/09/2023 09:15

I love s sleeping bag and have one for the winter but I’d absolutely hate a coverless duvet!

I can wash all of my bedsheets and a couple towels in one wash and then they dry really quickly.

I can imagine you can only fit one in a washing machine at a time which is such s waste of your time and electricity.

I also have a couple of spare duvets, so I don’t have to wait for them to be washed and dried and they store easier.

I love having fresh new, different bedding on. It just makes it feel so much more cosier as it feels like new.
I also have an Xmas theme one which gets me excited when I get it out each year.

I wouldn’t have the time or money to wash and dry an entire duvet twice a week.

Noorandapples · 01/09/2023 09:16

I got my kids them but still use duvet covers, it's just quicker to wash and dry than a normal duvet if they're sick or wet the bed

EyesEars · 01/09/2023 09:17

I have summer and winter weight and like them. They aren't that pretty but are clean and easy.

I have ADHD too and I couldn’t think of anything worse than having to wash and dry my entire duvet.

Changing the covers is so much less hassle!

I would say these aren’t suitable for most people with ADHD as you’re going to have to actually remember to take them out of the washing machine and dry them before going to bed.

Is it drama? It's 40 posts. The OP is seeking opinion and is getting opinions. How is that drama?

shibhon · 01/09/2023 09:22

I don't understand the hype. Much easier to change duvet covers and wash them. I assume these coverless ones need to dry in a tumble dryer - so lots of energy usage.

I like good quality covers, linen or washed cotton so coverless are not for me.

Peridot1 · 01/09/2023 09:29

I recently bought a single lightweight one as I realised I didn’t have a single size summer weight duvet and we were having guests to stay. It seems to work well and was easy to wash and dry. It was a cheap one from Amazon. If I was to get more I’d try for a more breathable one I think.

fitflopqueen · 01/09/2023 09:32

We have wool duvets and cotton covers on our beds for daily use but I bought 2 of these coverless duvets for occasional guests and if we have the odd night elsewhere, easy to wash and dry very quickly.

ŁadnaPogoda · 01/09/2023 09:39

A counterpane/bedspread covered the entire bed and hung down, almost to the floor. An eiderdown was like a duvet, but sat on top of the counterpane. My parents had a matching set in maroon satin.
