Govt backs national service? How about funding pay award for Medics who provide a national health service?
or is this a rouse to get the teens doing the donkey work and pay them sweet fa but call it character building

The BBC article on the last man demobbed from National Service says he was 22 in 1960, and that some of his cohort were 4 years younger than him.

So that last batch included men born between 1938 and 1942

I must have added up wrong in previous post (by 18months, as I think it's duration I mucked up - peacetime conscription was initially 18months, but was extended in 1950 because of the Korean War).

Despite what first hit on google says, the youngest on the final cohort would be 80 turning 81 this year.

I’m only going on my dad who is pretty on the ball. His school year-sept 1939-July 1940-turning conscription age was when it stopped being compulsory. Those school friends a bit older than him who were born in the Autumn term had to do it, but it had stopped by the time it got to him in February.

@mnhq.

What part of the Talk Guidelines did my post break that @Pedallleur 's didn't?

stripeyjug · 31/08/2023 22:30

@BIossomtoes so you do think this policy appeals to some older voters?

I have absolutely no idea. I don’t see why it would. Why do you think it does?

Your use of misogynistic slurs I expect.

Hawkins0009 · 31/08/2023 23:43

Why not, it , may help society.

Sugarcoatt · 31/08/2023 23:44

I don’t have a problem with kids being encouraged to do voluntary work. I do however think that it will be impossible to organise given that 16yos are legally classed as children, which means there is all sorts of safeguarding and restrictions on working hours, requirements for DBS, private changing facilities not shared with adults, etc. Already loads of employers won’t hire anyone under 18 because the restrictions are so arduous.

They would be better off getting social care infrastructure sorted first.

Yes. I did report it.

NCS is a fantastic scheme. It changed my 16 year old's life. I joke with her that she started it a child and finished a woman

This. It was absolutely amazing for my DS. I was shocked tbh. It really was transformational. And he has SEN and really struggled at school/socially. Not sure whether having an opt out system is going to be successful in getting more teens to attend though.

Won't happen. It would require investment and planning for one thing. It's just vote bait for the older people, like the plan to limit care costs to 100k which also never happened.

Exactly this. I think in theory it's a good idea for 15-16 year olds to take (say) the last year of their schooling as "national service" with the proper guidance from capable adults but the tories could never get it together

PinkCherryBlossoms · 01/09/2023 07:44

Fuck me, the Tories really are getting desperate now.

GettingStuffed · 01/09/2023 07:46

Most people hear national service and assume it will be teenagers serving time in the military and not actually look at the scheme. It's to rally the right wing to vote conservative.

This.

It's difficult enough to get a work experience place here or volunteering for DoE unless you know someone or are already part of the Scouts/Guides.

My friend had her own DD with her and she said the amount of paperwork was huge and while the girl really pulled her weight and did amazingly, she said they now discourage workexperience/volunteering.

A weekend job is nearly impossible to get as as we have a large college with 18 year olds who don't have the number of red tape attached and they snap up all the jobs.

Aren’t they?

user1477391263 · 01/09/2023 09:59

It will never happen. Red-meat click bait to get the blue-rinse brigade to get out and vote next election.

user1477391263 · 01/09/2023 10:01

I can think of some perfectly healthy early-retirees who should be doing this, but that’s another story.

Anxioys · 01/09/2023 13:01

Yes it's a bait for an older demographic who likely don't want young people simply having the same freedoms they have. My father missed national service and was grateful. The sooner we get rid of this government the better.

The young people in question, should the proposal come in, will simply opt out if they don't want to do it.

They aren't being sent to the trenches for 2 years.

Notonthestairs · 01/09/2023 13:17

Currently teenagers can choose to do NCS.

Why add an additional layer of administration and therefore cost to the process by insisting people opt out?
Who decides if there reasons for opting out are adequate?
Keeping a list of all 16 year olds and their status will not be cost neutral.
How much money will be spent on the scheme?

Anxioys · 01/09/2023 13:44

It's just red meat for a certain sort. Like ULEZ, boat people, woke issues. All designed for the core nutters who support the Conservatives
