@tt9 isn't that what school/college is for?

I don't know... but I feel national service is something that teaches other life skills ... I guess I think of it as a more advanced version of scouts?

obviously given the ineptitude of the UK government, they are sure to royally mess it up

StaunchMomma · 31/08/2023 21:06

Yet more licking of gammony arse to get more votes 🙄

TheDogsMother · 31/08/2023 21:08

Pre-election sound bites are coming thick and fast. It's astonishing what they think people want to hear.

won't happen.
it's embarrassing that it's a vote winner.
They is a lot more they could be doing for the countries young!

rwalker · 31/08/2023 21:14

Irrespective if it’s a good idea or not
we are a non compliant nation who won’t be told to do anything

stripeyjug · 31/08/2023 21:15

Great idea in principle, but there'd be too many parents citing their little darling's 'human rights' or 'mental health issues' to get them exempted. There's no sense of collective responsibility any more, sadly, as we see in many aspects of life.

lol

UnaOfStormhold · 31/08/2023 21:16

This just gives me flashbacks to Yes Prime Minister and Hacker's Grand Design - not to mention the brilliant demonstration on how to fix an opinion poll.

Leading Questions - Yes Prime Minister

Sir Humphrey Appleby demonstrates the use of leading questions to skew an opinion survey to support or oppose National Service (Military Conscription).Taken ...

This is the sort of nonsense to catch the votes of the older generation who don't realise that 1000s of teens already do DofE, Scouts, Guides, NCS, various Cadet groups etc.
The idea exists already. It's available already for those interested (some schemes however do need a bit more promotion - as I said upthread).

Notonthestairs · 31/08/2023 21:21

Seems less of a vote winner, more of a chance for certain people to put the boot into the younger generation (whilst never having participated in anything similar themselves).

Needmorelego · 31/08/2023 21:21

@tt9 the government has already "royally messed it up" by failing to encourage and promote the scheme that already exists !

Pedallleur · 31/08/2023 20:11

Its just clickbait for Brexit gammons who like the sound of National Service. If such a scheme existed no politicians children would be doing it. Their gap years, year out etc would be ruined. One for the poor people but really it's just to get some voters excited

So bloody true

“The proposals would see teenagers participate in a two-week 'civic exploration' trip and complete a number of volunteering hours each year. “ it’s also not compulsory.

What’s the problem? It’s not conscription!

I agree. I feel like there is a point being made that I'm completely missing!

Notonthestairs · 31/08/2023 21:25

Personally if we are going to splash some cash on younger people I'd like to see more youth clubs, leisure centres and opportunities to try out different sports.

Whatever it should be a voluntary decision.

bellac11 · 31/08/2023 21:29

Wheres the money coming from.

stripeyjug · 31/08/2023 21:29

I think some older people love putting the boot in hence why it's seen as a vote winner.

TheMoth · 31/08/2023 21:32

How old were the last men to do it? My dad's in his 70s and he didn't have to do it.

There are also stories of lads being kicked out of it because they were too badly behaved. Conversely, there were boys, who would quite possibly be diagnosed nd today, for whom it was hell on earth.

But like a pp, I'd rather them throw the money into schemes to actually help kids at a younger age, before the pull of their peers is too much.

Magic money forest.

Needmorelego · 31/08/2023 21:37

@TheMoth my Dad is 79 and he didn't have to do National Service. If he was a year or 2 older he might have. Basically only men who are now older than 80 would have done it.

Lisbeth50 · 31/08/2023 21:40

This type of thing was talked about when I was at school 40 years ago and hasn't happened yet.

Shinyandnew1 · 31/08/2023 21:42

Nobody under 83 did compulsory National Service-it’s bizarre that people who never had to do it and won’t have to do it, are suggesting that young people should have to !

I think a birth date of October 39 was the rough cut off. My dad-born early in 40-just missed it.

Notonthestairs · 31/08/2023 21:45

Stripey I think those voters would vote Conservative anyway.

"I agree. I feel like there is a point being made that I'm completely missing!"

Every 16 year will automatically be put forward. If they decide they don't want to do it they will have to opt out - which, aside from adding a layer of a unnecessary administration and therefore cost, seems like an opportunity to shame anyone that doesn't comply.

I agree NCS would benefit from better marketing/awareness.

Yes. It looks like an amazing experience for young people.

bellac11 · 31/08/2023 21:47

Yes my dad did it, probably one of the last ones.
