I've looked in sport, and as it's the start of the season I'd love to congratulate/commiserate/complain about the quality of the coffee?

Anyone else with a rugby kid?

As mentioned, DDs team has 3 U12s starting... this is their biggest ever number for September of Yr7. Last year it was 1. U12 also struggles by being a single year group whereas the other age groups are two years.

By the time its U16s... its a full team with reserves.

Setyoufree · 28/08/2024 21:28

Thanks both, wise advice ❤️

Hi Rugby Mums

Can I ask what type of mouthguard you'd recommend?

Buying DS a new one.

If he has all his adult teeth and doesn’t lose things a lot you can get a custom one made by his dentist but they are quite expensive so not ideal if his teeth are still changing.

However mine lose things constantly so I just get the boil and bite type on Amazon- Opro and Safe Jawz are two brands but there are others.

YesitsBess · 30/08/2024 11:05

Mine has one made by a dentist and it's made a huge difference to his ability to breathe properly.

We're currently in the pre-season "where is everything and what doesn't fit" era. He's decided to spend the summer growing the (not so little anymore) git 😆

autumnleavesandrugby · 30/08/2024 11:09

Definitely recommend the dental fitted guard. So much comfier and actually stay in position all the time rather than rattling round their mouth.
under 18s for mine now which seems a huge step up in physicality- he’s still very slim despite a lot of gym time over the summer, not looking forward to watching first game tomorrow!

Setyoufree · 30/08/2024 23:02

We've been using opro gold for a couple of seasons. If you use the cage to mold it, it stays put in the mouth while you're playing

Florin · 31/08/2024 17:43

Random but we are now on our rugby clubs committee and I would quite like to add just one thing on to the menu which quite frankly isn’t just crap pork products especially something that might appeal to the women/Mum’s as there is never anything I want to eat. Any thoughts? I want smashed avocado but this might be a step to far the rugby club but I can try 😂

Are you meaning for the after match lunch, or just general bar food?

BaconEggAndCoffee · 31/08/2024 17:53

@Florin the issue is waste.

It needs to be something that can be kept if the games are cancelled and that can be made easily and quicky in small quantities or that will appeal to lots of people.

I think it is good for clubs to expand, we now do home made soup and that has worked well, and vegan sausages.

More for breakfast on training days. Current offering is bacon or sausage in bread and if you are feeling fancy add an egg 😂

Duckduckloose · 31/08/2024 22:21

I can’t imagine avocado going down well at our club either!
Maybe tea cakes or pastries? They can be frozen and brought out in small quantities at a time and don’t take long to heat.
Not particularly healthy but lighter than pork!

PuttingDownRoots · 31/08/2024 22:28

It will depend what catering facilities you have too... I spend the last year with the "breakfast" option being chocolate bars and they've got a massive thermos to make cuppas at the side of a field (at a partner club) Our Home club might have the bar open for coffee if there's enough games on... but catering is too busy with the Sunday lunch at any post match food needed.

I've only seen bacon sandwiches at a couple of places... except when its at a top flight club with a proper stadium.

UsingChangeofName · 31/08/2024 22:29

I can't imagine avocado being popular either.

Are you volunteering to cater, or just to dictate what other people do ?

Is this for players ? Confused
Or do you mean for people waiting for the players ?

WarningOfGails · 01/09/2024 08:47

Avocado will have a lot of waste.

WarningOfGails · 01/09/2024 08:48

If people are willing to make things ahead and freeze them in advance, things like muffins or breakfast burritos?

mamaduckbone · 03/09/2024 22:34

I'd go for pastries and decent coffee over a bacon sandwich any day, but rugby clubs are still generally inhabited largely by Neanderthal man 😂
We went to a training session with a coffee cart once - it was bliss.

My ds is going into u16s this year and is in a complete quandary at the moment about whether to move club. He's been frustrated at his current club for a couple of seasons for various reasons and has been to a couple of training sessions with another local-ish team, but the pull of his mates and history at the local
club is strong. We've given him a deadline of Thursday as we need to get him affiliated and subs paid before the first match, wherever he decides to go.

I'm astounded. I don't think I've ever been to a club that doesn't sell bacon rolls, not all do egg, but all do bacon and coffee - grass roots Union clubs and I've been to loads over five counties.

BaconEggAndCoffee · 03/09/2024 22:54

@mamaduckbone what are the reasons?

It might be as my DD has just moved from minis to Girls... so her matches were at 10am last year, often on random fields loosely connected to the clubs.

Mine considered moving over the summer as did a few others, the coaches really rallied once they were made aware of some "culture problems" within the squad (which is always going to happen with a bunch of U16 boys) and we're going into next season with only 2 drop outs which is reassuring.

We're really lucky with our clubhouse, 2 kitchens and they serve all sorts! 😎

BaconEggAndCoffee · 03/09/2024 22:54

@mamaduckbone what are the reasons?

We belong to a really excellent club but unfortunately his age group have always suffered through lack of committed players and inexperienced coaches. There isn't a whole lot of respect for the coaches and although they're lovely people, as the boys have got older and the game more complex they're out of their depth. This results in a lot of mucking about in training and very few wins.
Ds just can't be doing with it - he's frustrated with his teammates and the fact that half of them don't really seem to want to be there.
To be honest, although I'm very attached to our local club and don't want him to leave in one way, I can't go through another season of him so miserable so if he moves so be it. He's at the decider training session tonight.

PuttingDownRoots · 04/09/2024 19:40

I think you can outgrow a club. Frankly, some players are better than others... especially at adult level, hence all those different leagues. But thats ok... there needs to be teams for good players and for social players.

Good luck with the decision

I think you're right - when he was younger he just played for fun, but now he wants to take it more seriously, and has made it into the DPP for our local premiership club, he wants to play with others who are the same.
I'll miss the parents ☹️

00BonneMaman00 · 15/09/2024 07:52

Can I ask if anyone else's team (U15's) makes the boys change into "number ones" after every match?
