I’ve visited every county in England, apart from Kent.

Dds asked what counties I’ve been to and after looking at the map I realised I have properly physically visited all of them (not just driven through), apart from Kent.

I think I should go to Kent now even though it’s a total pain in the arse to get to from where I live in the north west.

What would draw a person to Kent?

Go the the beaches!

Broadstairs, Ramsgate, Margate etc

00100001 · 26/08/2023 08:16

Canterbury?

DisforDarkChocolate · 26/08/2023 08:17

I need to know which counties you liked, especially ones you didn't expect to.

EileenBrysonsTeabags · 26/08/2023 08:19

Oh Lord, I’m an idiot. I’ve just realised that Dover is in Kent. I thought it was in East Sussex. I’m an idiot. I have been to Kent then.
Although driving through Kent just to get to a ferry terminal doesn’t really count as visiting.

Cantebury! Ah ha. That would be definitely worth a visit.

It depends on what kinds of things you like.

Tunbridge Wells and Sevenoaks are nice towns, picturesque villages in between and there are some nice walks and National Trust Properties around.

Seaside, as others have mentioned.

KCandtheSunlightBand · 26/08/2023 08:22

It is the garden of England! Also Canterbury and Whitstable, a few miles apart both beautiful. The Weald - AONB. Castles, beautiful villages.

bellac11 · 26/08/2023 08:22

Did you visit Rutland?

ShanghaiDiva · 26/08/2023 08:23

Some fabulous national trust properties including the former homes of Rudyard Kipling and Vita Sackville West.

Goslowglowworm · 26/08/2023 08:24

Dover castle, Rochester, Canterbury

But have you been to East Sussex?

Some of the midland counties (like Staffordshire or Leicestershire) are definitely up there as places I would 100% return to. I like walking and old pubs and castles and stately homes and all that shizzle and there are hidden gems all over the place in these counties.

Yep, beaches and castles (Dover, Hever, Richborough all very interesting, and very different).

Go to a vineyard, or an orchard (Biddendens). The villages in mid-Kent are prettier than the Cotswolds, IMO. There are steam railways and gardens and things like that if you want to fill half a day.

Canterbury has plenty of things to see. And then go do a tour of the amazing beaches (Whitstable, Margate, multiple beaches around Broadstairs, Ramsgate, Deal, and back round to Hythe and Dungeoness.

If you like cycling there’s the Viking Trail which goes around the North Kent coast. If you like walking there’s the North Downs Way.

Kent is beautiful. Garden of England. Canterbury is lovely, so is the countryside. Leeds Castle is one of the most beautiful places I have ever been. Hever Castle is good fun with DC. And Kent has wineries and pick your own farms too.

Covidcorvid · 26/08/2023 08:28

I’m in exactly the same position, it’s the only county I’ve never been to and am thinking about visiting. So whitstable, Canterbury, Leeds castle, Bedgebury are all things on my list so far.

Fifthtimelucky · 26/08/2023 08:29

That's pretty impressive, OP. I assume it was accidental rather than a deliberate policy.

Perhaps I should try to do the same. I have been everywhere in the south (with the exception of Bedfordshire I think) and everywhere in the north except for Cheshire, but have definitely missed a lot of the East Midlands.

Unicorntastic · 26/08/2023 08:32

Don’t bother with Thanet but the rest of Kent is ok, Dungeness is amazing for example.

EileenBrysonsTeabags · 26/08/2023 08:34

@Fifthtimelucky, yes completely accidental.

I used to live in Kent (technically though zone 3 so felt a bit like London) Our favourite days out were to Sevenoaks, Broadstairs and Faversham. This is the best time of year for Faversham, lots of fruit, you can go blackberrying and visit the fruit farm at Brogdale. We used to do the Faversham food trails a lot.

Cantthinkofadifferentname · 26/08/2023 08:37

Never thought about it, but looking at a list of the counties, I've been to them all in England

Oh come on, you can’t write off Planet Thanet. You’d miss things like Botany Bay, the Turner Contemporary in Margate, Ramsgate Tunnels, Deal Castle, and Richborough Roman Fort.

Deal is not in Thanet and Im not sure about Richborough technically, but Reculver is (which was the other roman fort) and the lovely Minnis Bay

Fair enough re: Deal, I always think of it as just past Ramsgate but I looked and it is further away than I thought!

Point stands though, OP shouldn’t avoid that whole corner of Kent just because parts of Margate are a bit run-down.

BumpyaDaisyevna · 26/08/2023 09:04

Do visit Chartwell - Winston Churchills home. It's NT.

Margate is great, its no more run down in parts than parts of Brighton but people dont slag Brighton off like that

There is a cycle route all the way from Deal/Kingsdown to Reculver and beyond, mainly off road.
