I’ve visited every county in England, apart from Kent.

Dds asked what counties I’ve been to and after looking at the map I realised I have properly physically visited all of them (not just driven through), apart from Kent.

I think I should go to Kent now even though it’s a total pain in the arse to get to from where I live in the north west.

What would draw a person to Kent?

i used to be surprised at people saying they lived in london when in fact they lived in Croydon for example,
which is a Surrey post code.

It’s London borough of Croydon postcode CR

Willmafrockfit · 26/08/2023 10:20

bit like bromley then @Mirabai
greater london has migrated out

MaidOfSteel · 26/08/2023 10:21

Now you've done all of England, will you start on Scotland, Wales or NI, OP?

Exactly.

Canterbury is lovely. And Hever Castle is one of my favourite places.

Turner exhibition at Margate also sounds good.

See I would have been all captain sneery if someone had suggested Margate as a place to visit before this thread.

I think you have to view it as mid gentrification. Don’t go thinking that it’s going to be a beautiful, genteel coastal town because it’s definitely not. Parts of it are downright rough. But there are other parts that wouldn’t be out of place in the most cosmopolitan of areas.

Also, @bellac11, I completely agree with you. Proper south Londoners would roll their eyes at the idea that Bromley is in London.

Flapjacker48 · 26/08/2023 10:30

@Nagado luckily terms such as "proper south Londoner" (which is what exactly?) have zero formal definition.

SharonEllis · 26/08/2023 10:31

Dont forget Medway (historically part of Kent, so don't start), as well as Chatham Dockyard which has already been mentioned Rochester has a great castle & Cathedral & the Medway estuary is interesting.

MissAmbrosia · 26/08/2023 10:32

I was born in Dover - which is not what it was to be fair - and lived in Deal for many years. I still miss it. Dd was born in Margate. So many lovely places as mentioned above. I like the Harbour and beach at Folkestone too. I really fancy a walk on the seafront now - breakfast on the pier, pot of whelks, glass of wine overlooking the beach.

MrsMoastyToasty · 26/08/2023 10:34

Have you been to

Bath and North East Somerset?
North Somerset?
City of Bristol?
South Gloucestershire?

All of these places are unitary authorities (they issue their own council tax bills and run the usual council operations). They were formed by the disbanding of the short lived county of Avon.

Bin85 · 26/08/2023 10:35

Sandwich
Chartwell

DinnaeFashYersel · 26/08/2023 10:35

I've hardly been to any English counties.

My only visits to Kent have been on buses to catch a ferry at Dover.

EileenBrysonsTeabags · 26/08/2023 10:40

@Nagado lovely detailed post, thank you!

Leeds Castle
Battle Abbey

rc22 · 26/08/2023 10:44

I'm being pedantic but some of the places posters are mentioning are in East Sussex - Battle Abbey, Bodiam Castle and Bewl Water (although that may straddle both counties?) 😉

LimeCheesecake · 26/08/2023 10:44

Oh I believe the bayeaux tapestry has a supposed to be coming to Kent for an extended visit this year- not sure if it’s going to Hastings or Battle - might be worth adding to your visit list?

the Whitstable oyster festival is great if you love seafood, but only if it’s dry enough to be outdoors. Hard to plan if you are coming from a long distance though.

Vitriolinsanity · 26/08/2023 10:46

My dad used to travel from Catford to Chislehurst during the war.
Many South Londoners did. The tours are really interesting.

Come and visit us in Kent OP!

Vitriolinsanity · 26/08/2023 10:48

I just checked the RM postcode finder. My address doesn't state Kent, but most assuredly is.

TBF - what was said that because some people use Kent in the address, that means it's in Kent.

But official addresses don't have the county in.

So people who put Kent in their address do so because they either think it's in Kent, want to be in Kent and think it should be in Kent.

I guess some people in Middlesbrough might do the same thing if they put a County in their address.

EileenBrysonsTeabags · 26/08/2023 10:55

@LimeCheesecake I love oysters. Will have to Google when the festival is on.

@MrsMoastyToasty, yes to all of those apart from South Gloucestershire, although the name of the town of Chipping Sodbury is giving me a stirring in my waters.

Unitary authorities are not the same as counties.
