I’ve visited every county in England, apart from Kent.

Dds asked what counties I’ve been to and after looking at the map I realised I have properly physically visited all of them (not just driven through), apart from Kent.

I think I should go to Kent now even though it’s a total pain in the arse to get to from where I live in the north west.

What would draw a person to Kent?

I know @cakeorwine MIL lives in Bromley and won't have any London nonsense.

Don’t bother with Thanet but the rest of Kent is ok, Dungeness is amazing for example.

The best beaches are in Thanet. joss bay is good for water sports, Botany Bay is lovely. Even Margate is fun for safe swimming and arcades with dreamland amusement park.

Flapjacker48 · 26/08/2023 11:15

No-one lives in Middlesex as it no longer exists. Not even as a ceremonial county.

Savemesos · 26/08/2023 11:21

Dover castle is epic. So much history. You can also do a cliff tunnel tour that is worth doing. Walmer Castle is also great (less keen on Deal castle though). All English Heritage!

Toseland · 26/08/2023 11:23

We like going on holiday in Kent - Dungeness old lighthouse, Dymchurch beach, the little RH&D railway, Hythe, Folkestone, the sound mirrors, Dover Castle all fab

ostwest · 26/08/2023 11:29

Go to Dover Castle. I went there last week and, although I am not a castle lover, it was amazing! Lots and lots of steps, but views are amazing and there's lots to see. You can even go to excursions into underground tunnels.

@bellac so under what formal definition other than what someone may "think" is Bromley in Kent today?

Bromley.gov.uk seem to think they’re postally Kent.

Judashascomeintosomemoney · 26/08/2023 11:40

From their website:

”Postally, Bromley is in Kent , and the administrative changes outlined have made no difference to this. There are some areas that are postally Bromley Kent but administratively within the London Borough of Lewisham”

Needingacoffee · 26/08/2023 11:43

My family had a Summer holiday in Kent this year. I'd recommend Broadstairs, Walmer Castle, Dover Castle, Richborough Roman Fort and Ampitheatre. Went to Deal Castle too, but preferred previous mentioned castles. My husband and sons also went to Battle, but that is East Sussex.

Reculver is not in Thanet! ShockWink

Not the Isle. We’re in the parliamentary constituency of North Thanet though, might be what is being referred to there

Did you visit Rutland?

I’d like to know this too OP. I drive through regularly on the way to Leeds and always think to myself that I really must stop there one day, looks beautiful!

I don't think that "postally" being in a county is a thing anymore - as counties have been dropped from the official address. It's post codes now.

CurlewKate · 26/08/2023 11:53

I live in Kent. It has absolutely everything except proper hills. What sort of thing would you like to see and I'll tell you where to go.

SgtPercyTwentyman · 26/08/2023 12:02

AVOID Gravesend, Sheppy and the Medway Towns (Sorry, Rochester you're damned by association). The rest is lovely with some great places to eat and drink and lots to see.

[Full disclosure Kentishman here.]

@bellac11
I have indeed been to Rutland. I went to school there for two years and in 2020 I cycled round Rutland water which was extremely pleasant. Indeed I started a thread on mumsnet about the best treatment for haemorrhoids whilst cycling in Rutland from which I received some excellent advice and was thus able to enjoy my day of circumnavigating the watery landmark.

@Nagado luckily terms such as "proper south Londoner" (which is what exactly?) have zero formal definition.

I’m not arguing with you Flapjacker, it’s too warm & I can’t be arsed.

But I work on the basis that if you have to ask what a proper south Londoner is, then the term doesn’t apply to you.

Well, it’s on Bromley.gov’s own website, so maybe someone should tell them

katscamel · 26/08/2023 12:10

Unless you're really into cathedrals then I wouldn't bother with Canterbury. Unfortunately unlike many cities its lost most of any character it once had and is now like any other random city. Funnily enough it's often the Cathedral that have forced shops out as they charge too much in rent.
Faversham /Whitstable/Deal/Hythe are good places to kill a few hours

Was that a boarding school?

There are some that are right bastards to cycle up, or even walk up.

Covidcorvid · 26/08/2023 12:27

I guess some people in Middlesbrough might do the same thing if they put a County in their address.

I used to live In Middlesbrough and I’m pretty sure it was still Cleveland when I was there. I remember stuff on the news about it getting dissolved

Gagaandgag · 26/08/2023 12:40

Which was the unfriendliest county?

dressedforcomfort · 26/08/2023 12:41

Whitstable is lovely.

Oh that is true (does this mean you're my neighbour?Smile). It's now going to become part of Herne Bay and Sandwich with the new boundary changes though... I think.
