Did you meet your DH/DP the old fashioned way. You know, in person?

I met my DH when we were introduced by my friend and her DP. It was my birthday and we'd planned a group night out in town with others and they had asked if they could include him . I said ok and that was that. The rest is history.

We went on to be bridesmaid and best man at each others weddings and godparents to each others children. In fact our marriage has outlasted theirs.

I'd say this is far more common in couples who have been together many years.

I'd be more interested to know how many people have met their partner in the last 5 years outside of online dating. I think it's getting harder.

I think this as well.

Us university same hall of residence and were friends first - but that's 25+ years ago.

DSis met both her ex at work.

Suggest it was a third met on-line between 2015-219 - predications were suggesting half by 2035.

Finding love online: More than half of couples set to meet via the internet

Research found that dating apps made it easier for introverted people to find a partner.

Yes, we met in person 23 years ago. We lived in different cities about 300km apart but had a mutual friend who introduced us.
We both knew pretty much straight away that this was it for us both. I was 28 and he was 25!!

We got together in May, we did long distance until we went on holidays in September. I got a job in his city in October and moved in with him!

We're now married 20 years and have a family.

I regularly thank my lucky starts that I listened to our friend and came to visit their city that weekend!

Crucible · 25/08/2023 14:29

In real life. Introduced by a family member of his who was my friend.

usernother · 25/08/2023 14:31

I have a relative who met her husband through work 7 years ago so relatively recently

Tea94 · 25/08/2023 14:32

We met 9 years ago in the local supermarket. We were 19 and 20!

ASoapImpressionOfHisWifeWhichHeAte · 25/08/2023 14:37

Yes, both teachers, 15 years ago. Tried hard to keep it from the kids but one Saturday evening about six months in we bumped into a little group from my form outside the cinema. They all thought it was hilarious and we entered the screen for 'Forgetting Sarah Marshall' with a load of 15yr olds making kissy-kissy sounds behind us. Back in school on Monday I said we were just mates but they knew better. And hard to keep under wraps when we got married the next year, although I suppose we could have claimed we were just having a wedding "as mates" too.

ImComingHomeIveDoneMyTime · 25/08/2023 14:37

Yes. I joined his band about 5 years ago. 3 years later, he drunkenly told me he was in love with me. Been together 2 years

Spanielsarepainless · 25/08/2023 14:43

I met DH at a shared interest group. EXDH I met through work.

DutchCowgirl · 25/08/2023 14:46

We met in 1998 but online, on ICQ. We were early adopters of OLD😅

BeReet · 25/08/2023 14:48

Yes, but it was the early 1990s so that's the way most people met. We were set up.on a blind date by my mate and his who were dating and thought we'd like each other. We did 😁

Lesina · 25/08/2023 14:49

Met him at a disco being held in a bomb shelter on the West Bank :) 30 years married

Lavenderandbrown · 25/08/2023 14:50

2nd marriage. On September 15,2012 out of 105,232 attendees he was selling a single ticket and I needed a single ticket. Sat together, I had on a huge hat and sunglasses and we barely spoke but did exchange phone number for future tickets. He kept in light contact and by March we were dating and now he is DH. Despite living 2 hours apart we have tracked 3 occasions we were at the same event in the previous years I always recommend doing things you enjoy so you can meet someone doing the same and have that in common.

Yep!

You lot don't know what you're missing. Get off the internet and get yourself into bars and pubs. Nothing, but nothing, beats eyeing up someone you fancy across the bar and finding some kind of excuse to open up a conversation with them.

So true! When you first set eyes on each other and you're not sure if they like you too but you keep looking back at each other and are drawn together. This is 'our' cheesy song from that night so many years ago yet remember it as if it was yesterday.

Strangers in the night exchanging glances
Wondering in the night
What were the chances we'd be sharing love
Before the night was through
Something in your eyes was so inviting
Something in your smile was so exciting
Something in my heart
Told me I must have you

Strangers in the night
Two lonely people we were strangers in the night
Up to the moment
When we said our first hello
Little did we know
Love was just a glance away
A warm embracing dance away, and
Ever since that night we've been together
Lovers at first sight, in love forever
It turned out so right
For strangers in the night

That initial chemistry that spurs you on to act immediately must be sadly missing on OLD

Nw22 · 25/08/2023 14:55

Yes I met him in a pub at uni through mutual friends

ErrolTheDragon · 25/08/2023 14:55

Yes (in our first week of uni in the physics subsidiary practical class). 'Online' was a very esoteric idea in the early 80s, though by the time I was doing my PhD I did play Mornington Crescent on a computer forumGrin.

DD met her BF on her degree course too, I guess that's still reasonably common even in the age of OLD.

Whattheduck · 25/08/2023 14:56

First met my Dh when we were at primary school got together at 19 and been together 34 years and married for 27 years

hoophoophooray · 25/08/2023 14:57

Goldencup · 25/08/2023 15:00

Peony654 · 25/08/2023 15:01

Yes I did, he was a friend of a colleague.

Allthestories · 25/08/2023 15:02

I met the first one when he was lodging with friends. Second one was an introduction by a friend who thought we'd get on.

lastminutewednesday · 25/08/2023 15:02

Yes we met in the wine aisle of Waitrose

waterlego · 25/08/2023 15:03

I met mine at school. He was in my brother’s year and I fancied him a bit but thought he was a bit of a ladies man. A few years after I left school, I saw him in the local pub and he had a black eye. I caught his eye across the room and mouthed ‘what happened?’ He came over and told me the story. Within an hour or so we were sitting together at a table with a group of mutual friends and found ourselves holding hands under the table. By the end of the night we were... well I won’t go into that, but that was 25 years ago and we celebrate 20 years of marriage in October.

waterlego · 25/08/2023 15:04

Loving these stories by the way. Nice thread 💚

Duckingella · 25/08/2023 15:04

At secondary school some lads from another school with an earlier finishing time than mine use to wait on their bikes outside of the school gates for their friends from my school;my classroom for last lesson was overlooking them most days.

In the Summer between years 10 and 11 a boy who lived across my best friend had friends of his over and they'd hang out in his front garden and we'd watch them out of the window. One of them asked me out but I said no as I was off on a three week long youth camp and told him to ask me again when I was home.He didn't as he met another girl.

In the first half of my first year of college I was in a nightclub (yes I should not have been there as I was 16) and ran into some former older school friends who were out with some friends of theirs. We said hello and chatted before heading back to our respective friends.

I was working at my first part time job with my best friend;I got her the job.A new lad then starter.I thought he was an arrogant arse.My best friend thought I should date him so brazenly asked him if he was going to take me on a date and then she arranged said date with the when and where. She then she told me I was going on said date. That was 2001.We're married with 4 children.

It turns out;in that group of boys that waited outside my school gates was my DH.

In that group in my best friends neighbours garden was my husband. It was my DH's NDN that asked me out;I'm glad we didn't date.

In that group of friends my old school friends were with in that nightclub was my DH.

It seems we were destined to meet at some point as we had several mutual friends.

pilates · 25/08/2023 15:04

Yes in a nightclub
