Ds is a policeman. He has to work 2 days 7am-4pm then 2-11pm for 2 days. Then 4 days of 10pm till 7pm. Plus any over time that happens. He then get 2 days off. Day 1 is spent kind of sleeping. Due to the over night working. 2nd day of. Then back to work . For 7am. Body clock is awful.

Sorry I'm not sure what you're asking?

cryinglaughing · 23/08/2023 20:52

Not great but didnt he know this before joining the police?

WhatAPalaverer · 23/08/2023 20:53

Those are fairly standard for shift work. It’s rubbish but many many people do it. If he hadn’t got young kids I can’t see the issue. It won’t be forever.

ImDoingThisNow · 23/08/2023 20:59

It’s awful. Shift work is horrible.

I don't think its made very clear when training. I don't think he will do it long term.

My friend is police. He's my age (44) looking forward to retiring young on a final salary scheme. Being police is brilliant. He's had a fairly easy ride as he lives in an upmarket town and it's not exactly gangland killings.

anywherebutthere · 23/08/2023 21:11

It's usually 2 earlies, 2 lates, 2 nights then 3 days off. What force has you working 8 shifts in a row?

BarbaraofSeville · 23/08/2023 21:12

You'd have to have been living under a rock to not know that police officers worked shifts like that.

It's not ideal but I would have thought if it was practical to change the shifts to be more sociable they would have done it by now.

It’s hardly identifiable? I’m curious as to what force use that shift pattern as it’s not one I’m aware of so I would be interested to know to avoid ever transferring to them!

I couldn't do it, take my hat off to people who can and not surprised he can't see him being in it long term.

😂😂😂 He should have thought about that before joining the force. What is it tonight with parents moaning bout the hours their children work? They’re adults FFS!

UndercoverCop · 23/08/2023 21:14

It's pretty common knowledge police work shifts and unsocial hours. Your son will have known this. He'll get used to it. He'll also likely develop the ability to sleep anytime, anywhere and that's useful!

BarbaraofSeville · 23/08/2023 21:15

So he's working a couple of extra night shifts. Will he get paid extra or get the time back later? They probably can't force him to work extra so he must have volunteered.

Yeah sorry a few of them are forced work days . Normally it's simlar to what you say . But he gets 4 days of . He really struggles though especially with forced days

My understanding is that different forces can have different patterns. My friend was a policeman for just over 2 years in TVP. He said they had awful shift patterns.

I don’t understand that feelings about the police, personally, I think they have the hardest job of any of the services (not including the army).

Hats off to your son.

The houes are not always clear and thongs change hevis my son . I'm allowed to feel bad for him and have some empathy for him. FFS

I think that has always been the police shift pattern. I had a boyfriend who had that about 20 years ago. Though I'm sure he got 3 if not 4 days off.

Police don’t have “forced” shifts, if he is working them then he has volunteered.

There are (forced) worldwide days your not allowed to refuse. And over time could be because there was a kite arrest or something like that you can't just leave when the clock says 10pm for example

Rest days can and are cancelled for events like football, matches, concerts etc but not like you are implying.

I sincerely hope he does change his thongs as the houes aren’t clear…
