Give me a non alcoholic drink that isn’t awful

Just that - got to attend various barbecues etc at the weekend where everyone else will be drinking except me. What can I drink? Non alcoholic wine is awful. Tried nozzeco and hated it, thought about non alcoholic gin but it’s the same price as the real thing so would need to be worth it!

any other ideas? Zero beer is ok but I can’t drink more than one.

thanks!

Diet Coke is the best barbecue drink.

HippyChickMama · 22/08/2023 14:49

Fentiman's Rose Lemonade is nice (if you like rose flavour) or Crodino which is similar to Aperol spritz but without the alcohol

Not pregnant. Taking antibiotics (metronidazole).

I feel your pain! I was on metronidazole in December and had so many parties!
I went with alcohol free beer at the time, and it worked well for me, but I can drink more than one!

Im currently pregnant and tried some AF wine and OMG... no. Just... no!

2phat2phaf · 22/08/2023 14:52

If you like stout, Guiness Zero is good

Ginmonkeyagain · 22/08/2023 14:52

Ting - a fizzy grapfruit drink it great - you can often get it in the West Indian section in Sainsbury's.

If you can get them French style syrops with fizzy water and ice are great - I love a peach one.

PartsofKentareok · 22/08/2023 14:54

I just like elderflower cordial w fizzy water

CrapBucket · 22/08/2023 14:55

I just drink tonic with no gin. (In my head I call it a nonic)

Good luck with the tooth! Or whatever is needing antibiotics - I was on that type and they are very powerful.

HerRoyalNotness · 22/08/2023 14:58

If you can find seedlip over there it’s really good. I’ve only tried this garden one and made it up with elderflower fever tree tonic. So good

Give me a non alcoholic drink that isn’t awful
LateSummerLobelia · 22/08/2023 15:01

I am not a fan of seed lip. It’s just expensive flavoured water. Zero calories as my sister says. Which means you are paying slot for expensive urine…. Which to be fair is the same as buying alcoyanyway.

LateSummerLobelia · 22/08/2023 15:02

Alcohol … autocorrected to something strange

truthhurts23 · 22/08/2023 15:02

shloer

MinnesotaMuffin · 22/08/2023 15:09

I don’t drink anymore and these days I nearly always just drink Coke but I agree with the pp’s - definitely my vote goes to the Gordon’s % it tastes just like the real thing.

Seedlip is quite nice but expensive.

The Brewdog % beer is pretty good. I prefer it Beck’s Blue.

Elderflower or ginger cordial with soda or tasty tonics are lovely.

Stay clear of Nosecco.

bakermummy21 · 22/08/2023 15:10

I love Bottlegreen Ginger & lemongrass cordial. A kick of ginger without the alcohol.

Ladyoftheknight · 22/08/2023 15:11

Elderflower cordial with strawberries, mint and lots of ice with sparkling water/lemonade helped me through 4 summer pregnancies.

BarbaraofSeville · 22/08/2023 15:11

I've tried several alcohol free gins, as well as still and sparkling wine and lager.

The only one that wasn't a complete disappointment that tasted anything like the real thing was very low alcohol (0.5%) lager, which is probably no good for you, because of the ABs.

Having said that I've drunk alcohol on metronidazole with no ill effects, the first time because I completely forgot I wasn't supposed to be drinking, and the second time because nothing bad happened the first time. But others reported being very very sick, so probably not worth the risk.

I don't know what sort of gin the people recommending no alcohol gin have drunk, but I don't think it tastes like a G&T. It's just mildly gin flavoured cordial.

Alcohol free red wine tastes like sour ribena.

Alcohol free sparkling wine is just like over-sweet, watered down sparkling wine.

I'd drink tonic water on it's own, orange juice and soda or something like Cawston's Press.

BigBoysDontCry · 22/08/2023 15:13

Non alcoholic Kopparberg is my go to. Berries or strawberry and lime out of choice.

JenniferBarkley · 22/08/2023 15:13

I ditched the alcohol free versions of alcoholic drinks when pregnant, they were all crap. I drank nice lemonade instead.

Maddy70 · 22/08/2023 15:13

The different fever tree tonics are nice

mindutopia · 22/08/2023 15:16

I'm sober and I really enjoy an AF beer. You may just need to try a few to find what you like. I really like the Leffe ones, also Brooklyn Special Effects. Just please no Becks Blue. Blergh.

I also really enjoy various things mixed with tonic. When I drank, I wasn't really a big mixed drink person, so I don't really go to the trouble of the AF gins. A tonic with a lemon or lime slice is nice. You can also make a cafe tonic by adding a shot of coffee/espresso at room temp with lots of ice. I really enjoy these.

Honestly, I don't usually drink more than 2 AF drinks. I think that's the case for most non-alcoholic drinks though. Like imagine you are going out to lunch with work colleagues. You probably wouldn't drink 2-3 cokes. You'd drink one and maybe a bit of water. The only reason people drink 3-6 beers/wines/g&t's in a sitting is simply to get the alcohol in.

Find something you enjoy and drink it slowly. Have some nice cold water too. I also really like iced teas (that you make yourself with tea and a pitcher and some ice). Sometimes I still carry the bottle around if I want to feel like I have a drink in my hand, but mostly, you realise that people drinking alcohol do drink an awful lot of liquid over a relatively short period of time and you don't have to do that.

Ginmonkeyagain · 22/08/2023 15:18

Big Drop AF beers are good.

Biscuitandacuppa · 22/08/2023 15:19

Kopperberg mixed berry cider is very nice. Gordon’s pink 0% gin is lovely. Elderflower cordial and tonic water. Lime and mint cordial and tonic water.

Whataretheodds · 22/08/2023 15:23

I don't rate the Gordon's one, I'd rather drink straight tonic.

I think there are other better NA 'gin'

TooOldForThisNonsense · 22/08/2023 15:33

Whataretheodds · 22/08/2023 14:42

It depends why you're off the sauce.

I like Martini Vibrante (PP linked above) with tonic water and a slice of orange.
Or tonic by itself with ice and garnish
Or lucky Saint beer
Or Lyres or Zeno non-Alcoholic wine.
(Check out Club Soda on instagram/web).

If not pregnant, you could try Sentia, or Botivo which Grace Dent raved about in the paper this weekend.

Oh I love the Martini and tonic!

OP - AF beer, tins of AF GnT (I’ve had an Eden Mill one with Rose Lemonade), AF cider eg Kopparberg/Old Mout

Appletise/Lemon Fanta

as for only drinking one I find I drink less of AF drinks than alcoholic ones

MrsMarzetti · 22/08/2023 15:34

R Whites raspberry lemonade with a slice of lime is so lovely.
