Not sure if this has been done before (or done to death even), so apologies if so!

A thread to ask those burning questions and mundane ponderings. Anyone can ask or answer anything. Please no making things up though as that will spoil the fun!

I'll go first... Vegans. I completely understand the ethics of not eating and using animal produce that results in the harm or death of animals. I understand in particular the cruelty of the dairy industry. However, I am genuinely curious as to what the ethical issue is with free range eggs. For example, if someone raised hen's as pets, on their land, fed them good food etc. Then surely the unfertilised eggs laid are nothing more than a waste product and there is no cruelty involved? (I am genuinely curious and not trying to be inflammatory. I know Google exists but first hand experience and accounts are much more interesting).

Thank you and feel free to add your own!

Cats, unlike dogs, cannot eat a vegetarian diet. If you giving your animal meat/fish etc you cannot be a vegetarian.

Also to add to your vegan question, honey? I believe there’s already a ‘is honey vegan’ debate. I have to be honest it’s a random thought and I’ve never really looked into it so I’m just being lazy and want someone to do the research for me 😂

I would like to add avocado to this . So if anyone can give me a good answer to the ' can vegans eat avocados' question this would be good too

Provided you are not eating the cat food (or the cat) you would still be vegetarian even if you fed meat to the cat.

If my periods presented themselves so beautifully I'd have been happy to offer them up to others Wink

Wait, an egg is regarded as a chickens period?!!

What do you call somebody who doesn't eat any meat, fish, eggs, dairy or animal products?

Vegan, no?

What do you call one of these people who shares a home with someone who isn't vegan? What if they share it with an animal who isn't vegan?

What if not eating these things has absolutely nothing to do with a desire not to be cruel to animals?

What do you call a baby that doesn't eat any animal products but hasn't formulated a complicated philosophy around why as it is just a descriptor of what they eat, not their moral philosophy?

Vegan, right?

An unprincipled vegetarian maybe.

Why do posters who start "ask me" threads boil my piss so much?

Aibu?

for any one who follows a religion:

If you got to heaven/day of judgement or whatever it is that your religion believes happens and you found out your religion was wrong and made up just to control people and the real religion was X (insert any that isn’t yours) would you wish you had lived your life differently?

so as an example, if your Muslim and follow your religion strictly and the day of judgement comes and your told your religion was made up and Christianity was the real religion would you regret following strict beliefs? Would you choose to live your life differently if you had the chance to go back and re-do it?

this question replies to anyone of any faith, I just used those two as examples as I’m Christian and my friend follows the Muslim faith and we find it a really interesting topic! I have always wondered if people would regret adhering to beliefs if they found out they were wrong.

i hope this makes sense and doesn’t offend anyone!

Climate change denial.

I just don't get why people can't see climate change for what it is. I get but don't agree with doomism and mitigation over avoidance. But denial is just weird. More than once I have seen people claim that net zero means all the plants would die because plants need CO2.

darkestnights · 22/08/2023 17:46

Preppers: what do you believe is actually going to happen that you'll need all that stuff for? If you spent your life prepping and worrying about a potential big event and nothing ever happened, would you feel it was a waste of a load of energy anxiety?

threecupsofteaminimum · 22/08/2023 17:48

@ohsuzannah

I mean, it's an unfertilised egg isn't it!?

noseymckindle · 22/08/2023 17:48

The vegan thing is kinda interesting cause surely it's the circle of life. Animals fertilise the ground that the fruit and veg grow from etc? Maybe I'm being daft but I definitely don't see what harm could be cause by eating honey

NotTheSlugandLettuce · 22/08/2023 18:00

Only DIRECTLY produces 2% but is RESPONSIBLE for much more through overconsumption. Every time you buy tat from China it is China that gets blamed for the carbon emission, but you are actually the root cause.

This is so true and I am mortified I never thought of it that way.
I don't order masses of stuff from China at all (don't do shein or temu
For eg) but def been guilty in the past of party bag shite etc

I'm Christian and haven't followed all of it. I did for a bit but realised religion was being used to keep women subservient. I'm still Christian now just believing I'm equal.

I don't think finding is followed the wrong religion would bother me too much. I think the monotheistic ones are very similar with core values? Don't kill don't steal love god etc. I think if you are a good person you can get into heaven even if it's the 'wrong one'.

But obviously they may not let me in if god (rather than the MEN who wrote the holy books) thinks my role is support human, sexual object and brood mare with lower value and intelligence than penis people

Bilingual people - do you think in one language more than another or a mixture of both? And is it a conscious choice - do you think (e.g) I'd rather think about this problem in French than English?

Is 87 separate incidents (over a year) too many to hand in with an initial grievance letter?

My questions are for teachers, mainly secondary school ones.

I understand that teachers are inundated with work, but how much does the curriculum vary each year? Are there resources that you just regurgitate each year? (So with good admin it's just a click of a button on your saved folders). Is it like groundhog day? Do you ever think "I was teaching this formula to last year's Yr 10's and now I'm teaching it to this year's Yr 10's. "

Not a school teacher but have worked as an English teacher.

There are resources that I reuse but not everything works for a particular class and also I'm not that organised, much as I have all these grand plans to save and reuse things!

I have a mix of things to reuse, textbooks to follow and new stuff that's thought up out of my head or some new idea I've come across to present info.

My question:
If Darth Vader had a baby with a Stormtrooper would the baby turn out grey?

Well now my brain has exploded.

I'm never going to be able to un-think that now!

AllProperTeaIsTheft · 22/08/2023 18:24

How do you pronounce Lucia?

It depends on the language of origin.

Italian - loo chee a
Spanish (Lucía) loo th ee a or loo see a, depending on which part of the Spanish-speaking world you come from.

I expect it exists in other languages too, but that's the limit of my Lucia knowledge! I don't think I've met a British Lucia.

So in your way of thinking, does that mean that vegetarians cannot keep any carnivorous creatures as pets?

Yes there are resources you re-use, but...
Schemes of work do change
Resources get tired
Resources need tweaking for different classes
You don't necessarily teach the same subject to the same year groups every year.
Not all resources suit all teachers
You still need to prepare for lessons - you don't just rock up to your class and open a PowerPoint you haven't looked at since last year.
You often need to print things, consider adaptations needed for students in tge class with SEN, upload resources to TEAMS so students who need to can look atcthe resources in advance etc.

On the upside, no it's not like groundhog day. Every lesson is different because every class and every teacher is different.
