Not sure if this has been done before (or done to death even), so apologies if so!

A thread to ask those burning questions and mundane ponderings. Anyone can ask or answer anything. Please no making things up though as that will spoil the fun!

I'll go first... Vegans. I completely understand the ethics of not eating and using animal produce that results in the harm or death of animals. I understand in particular the cruelty of the dairy industry. However, I am genuinely curious as to what the ethical issue is with free range eggs. For example, if someone raised hen's as pets, on their land, fed them good food etc. Then surely the unfertilised eggs laid are nothing more than a waste product and there is no cruelty involved? (I am genuinely curious and not trying to be inflammatory. I know Google exists but first hand experience and accounts are much more interesting).

Thank you and feel free to add your own!

If the UK only produces 2% of the worlds carbon emissions /.pollution, how much difference does it actually change in the grand scheme of things?
Yes, i get ANY reduction is a good thing, but is the rest of the world the the world doing bugger all.

Only DIRECTLY produces 2% but is RESPONSIBLE for much more through overconsumption. Every time you buy tat from China it is China that gets blamed for the carbon emission, but you are actually the root cause.

Does anyone who has a mega clean house have stuff ? Is decluttering the only answer? I fear it is

Not always, I have a fair amount of possessions but they all have a place to be tidied up to, and the place where things belong is never 'on top' of a surface its always properly away

Puting aside the consumption based emissions argument for a bit.

As a highly developed nation of the G7 who has benefitted massively from the burning of fossil fuels the UK and other developed nations have a duty of care to future generations across the globe. We are extremely privileged in being able to set an example without a detrimental impact on our standard of living.

In addition we have a relatively benign climate compared to many, and have an abundance of wind and solar resources that can make us net clean energy exporters. In developing our net zero path we also develop technologies we can export worldwide.

No idea about eggs!

My question is - why do babies like you to hold them while standing up? The can be in exactly the same position but you sit down and they yell.

Because they are tyrants.

It’s actually really hard to get ethical eggs. And I guess by definition they aren’t for us (from the chickens pov)

Itsvalentino · 22/08/2023 16:53

Would you rather sit down and be cold or stand up and be warm? (You’d be in the same position for 3 hours)

MrsMoastyToasty · 22/08/2023 16:56

My questions are for teachers, mainly secondary school ones.

I understand that teachers are inundated with work, but how much does the curriculum vary each year? Are there resources that you just regurgitate each year? (So with good admin it's just a click of a button on your saved folders). Is it like groundhog day? Do you ever think "I was teaching this formula to last year's Yr 10's and now I'm teaching it to this year's Yr 10's. "

Does oestrogen play a part in intuition/gut feeling? ie could it be stronger at times of a cycle?

Why do people I think are intelligent believe in god/Allah etc? Given it's all based on stories written by men centuries ago

Cottagecheeseisnotcheese · 22/08/2023 17:02

I think more experienced teachers will reuse and adjust lesson plans especially in secondary GSCE Chemistry syllabus for example doesn't keep changing but you have to adapt plans depending on whether teaching set 1,2 or 3. English literature doesn't have the same books each year but there is a wide choice so an individual school may choose the same books as it has the resources for say Romeo and Juliet and Macbeth so it would choose one of those over say Twelfth Night as they can't afford a new set of resources
to a certain extent the same will be true in Primary you work out what works and what doesn't so as time goes on lesson planning takes less time, but then you might move from Y2 to Y4 so a different levle is required , most teachers to not want to change year group annually for this reason

How do you pronounce Lucia?

Depends on the language. In Portuguese it’s pronounced Lucy-a (there is an accent on the u).

Fear.

Fear that this is it, and it could all be meaningless.

Hope.

Hope that this isnt the only life for them.

rumred · 22/08/2023 17:09

@redrighthand83 thanks, quite possibly. Very tempting but still weird to me

She can be vegetarian (assuming she doesn’t eat the cat).

She can’t be vegan.

@mumof1or2

Northern Spain= Loo THEE a
South Spain and South America= Loo SEE a

Yeah, to me there is a big difference in wondering and hoping there is more to this life, and following an interpretation in a book based to suit their own ideology!

As long as she doesn't eat it, she's still a vegetarian.

NameChange14192089 · 22/08/2023 17:10

There was a great debate on here last week around applying the ethics to pet ownership with veganism and vegetarianism.

Beersinshropshire · 22/08/2023 17:15

Most commercial free range eggs are from hens still kept in pretty terrible conditions with many never seeing the outdoors. Space conditions are still crowded. Male chicks born to these hens are waste and are killed. Free range hens do not die of old age but are killed when their bodies are worn out from over production of eggs.

WedTheBed · 22/08/2023 17:17

Also to add to your vegan question, honey? I believe there’s already a ‘is honey vegan’ debate. I have to be honest it’s a random thought and I’ve never really looked into it so I’m just being lazy and want someone to do the research for me 😂

40andlovelife · 22/08/2023 17:21

@MrsMoastyToasty I've been teaching 16 years and I wish you could just regurgitate! Thing is as you go along you will a- think of ways to improve it b- realise the resource was shite and need to bin it c- the school decides that you all need to teach in a different way ( eg enquiry based learning to knowledge based more recently and d- the kids are different every year so you need to adapt it for their ability and scaffold the task so that all get to the same end point. Then there's the issue of courses changing every so often so resources need to be changed but I would say that D is the most common reason in my experience

Because humans are evolved to grasp and believe in abstract ideas, as these help to form a social identity which bonds people people together, in larger groups than their families.

It’s the same reason why people believe in secular ideas such as political ideologies or social movements such as gender ideology ( which, like religion, does not have a rational or scientific foundation).

These movements will always come along.
