Were you named after anyone?

I know a lot of people use names/middle names as a way of naming their child after someone special but did you or your parents have any strange inspiration when choosing names?
For example, I’m named after a character from my DM’s favourite tv show in the 80s.

My Dad named me after a character in War and Peace. Not sure if he genuinely enjoyed the novel, or if he just wanted to sound intelligent when he told people 😂

IHeartGeneHunt · 20/08/2023 13:32

A Rottweiler.
My parents couldn't decide, and my uncle had just got a new puppy. They liked the name.

Sunnydata · 20/08/2023 13:33

My dad had a girlfriend whose name they liked

I am also named after a character in an 80s TV show!

FourChimneys · 20/08/2023 13:35

No, my parents firmly believed that all children should have their own names not be named after someone else. My siblings and I all have names which had never been used in either family before, as far as anyone could tell. This was late 50s and early 60s.

Whatajokr · 20/08/2023 13:35

My first and second names are the reverse of my dad's first girlfriends first and second names.

Don't know why my mum didn't veto it!

RicherThanYews · 20/08/2023 13:36

I was named after a treat grandparent who was a horrid person and a terrible parent, I'd consider that unusual when there were living grandparents that were wonderful people.

KimWexlersPonyTail · 20/08/2023 13:36

Named after a character in a famous musical, not Mary Poppins thank goodness.

eddiemairswife · 20/08/2023 13:38

My mother wanted something slightly different, but not outlandish. My father was reading a book about Napoleon at the time, and suggested I be named after his wife . Hence, Josephine.

Sadless · 20/08/2023 13:42

I am named after some one on different strokes must be from early 80s.

Mydogisagentleman · 20/08/2023 13:44

My dad, grandad, G grandad, GG grandad...
All the way back to 18.50s.
Our DD did not get the first born name!

LoserWinner · 20/08/2023 13:44

First name came from an actress who was popular around the time I was born. Second name was a family name. Third name added at the church at the last minute before my baptism because long-term bed-ridden great-grandmother hauled herself out of bed and turned up unexpectedly.

Susurrar · 20/08/2023 13:46

My Mum’s best friend (who also happened to be her cousin). I was born 2 years after her death. She died following a doctor’s error in administering medication.

I honestly don’t know how I feel about it. It’s lovely in prinicple but in some ways I feel that it everyone deserves their own name (family traditions aside).

CeeJay81 · 20/08/2023 13:46

After the daughter of my mother's favourite actor.

Tiespin · 20/08/2023 13:47

Named after a horse

SingingSands · 20/08/2023 13:47

In a way... yes.

I was called Lauren for a week and a half. Then, whilst still in hospital (I didn't come home from hospital until a month after my birth), my mum heard another mum calling her baby my name and thought that sounded nicer so that's my name now 😆

My middle name is after the little girl who lived next door. What you can gather from this is that my mother isn't full of originality...

EmmaPaella · 20/08/2023 13:48

No. My parents wanted us to have our own names. (My DM has however several times mildly guilt tripped me for not naming my children after family members).

TranquilityofSolitude · 20/08/2023 13:49

I'm named after a song from the 60s. It's not very well known but I occasionally hear it on the radio and it always makes me smile.

I'm Roxanne, named after the police song. I don't mind it but always thought that was a weird one to name a child after. It was already a fairly old song when I was born, still been sung at me my entire life though.

JorisBonson · 20/08/2023 13:53

I was named after Steve Nicks (her real name isn't Stevie!).

Maxineputyourredshoeson1 · 20/08/2023 13:55

My DM wanted to call me Demelza but DF said no, a couple of other names were floated about and they still couldn’t agree, they heard a song and both liked the name but unfortunately my name is so, so common - I had 6 others in my class.
My brother had (he died at 14) the exact same name as my DF.
Our DD’s weren’t named after anyone but DD2 does have a very famous song with the same name.

HellYeahAurora · 20/08/2023 13:56

my dad registered my name… I’m named after a topless model. Her last name was supposed to be my middle name. Thankfully he forgot.

ShineLikeA · 20/08/2023 13:58

My mother allowed the nun midwife who was there at my birth to name me. The fact that she did this, despite the fact that she says this nun was harsh and appeared to be of the opinion that labour pains were Eve's punishment for listening to the serpent, will tell you everything about my mother's chronic people-pleasing tendencies.

milliemermaid · 20/08/2023 13:59

My DFs name was Jack, therefore I was Jacqueline. Usually referred to as Jackie or Jack. I like it.
