Were you named after anyone?

I know a lot of people use names/middle names as a way of naming their child after someone special but did you or your parents have any strange inspiration when choosing names?
For example, I’m named after a character from my DM’s favourite tv show in the 80s.

Mine are original I think, although apparently my dad wanted my middle name to be after some actress or other that he liked, but my mum vetoed it.

DD has two middle names, both after other family members.

MadNads · 20/08/2023 17:24

Mine is the female version of a name that was used for generations for the first born Hmm it stopped at me as I dislike the name and think each person should have their own name.

That said, all of mine have middle names from films that range from ones that they had to wait until 18 to watch Wink and others that are U rated .

Dp has an equally unimaginative name after his dad and his brothers have his uncles names. Likewise with his cousins ffs. Pil wanted it to carry on with ours. It didn't happen.

My mum was named after 3 of my gran's sisters: Rose, Marie, and Eleanore = Rosemarie Eleanora. I've always thought it was a beautiful name and wished she'd named something equally as beautiful. But she gave us (her DC) very boring vanilla popular 1950s names & middle names.

My DS1 has my brother's middle name and DS2 has his father's, grandfather's and great-great-grandfather's name. The first wasn't intentional, it just went well with DS1's first name. The second is 'family tradition' for a second son.

Slightly unusually for a girl, I was named after my paternal grandfather, who died before I was born. It's a name that can be used for either sex but is spelled differently.

spanieleyes · 20/08/2023 17:28

Mine was very popular when I was born ( top 10) after a very beautiful famous woman of the time, it's now about 1500! Anyone I ever meet with my name is my age too!

Vexxa · 20/08/2023 17:28

I was named after my great grandmother, who died before I was born. I've always liked the family connection.

Warmhandscoldheart · 20/08/2023 17:34

I'm named after a character from a book, my Mum was reading it to my older siblings the night before I was born.

Songlines · 20/08/2023 17:40

My mother's younger sister, who died aged 7.

Bonjovispjs · 20/08/2023 18:08

My first name was after a song from the 60s, middle name after a town in England 🤣

pattyparsnip · 20/08/2023 18:21

A Leonard cohen song I was born a year later .

Sudename · 20/08/2023 18:24

I'm named after a not too well known 60s song, wonder if its the same one @TranquilityofSolitude

DinnaeFashYersel · 20/08/2023 18:25

A significant character in Gone With the Wind - my mother's favourite book. Middle name after a grandparent.

Lagershandy · 20/08/2023 18:36

Yes named after two uncles! The feminised versions of Dennis and Frank, and I love my names!

My mother wanted something slightly different, but not outlandish. My father was reading a book about Napoleon at the time, and suggested I be named after his wife . Hence, Josephine.

I love the name Josephine.

I was named after a distant relation (grandmother sister) who died tragically before she was 10 due to being hit over the head at school by a teacher with a wooden pencil case.

My grandfather was Alexander. I am Alexandria.

mathanxiety · 20/08/2023 18:55

I was named after a long, long line of women in the family in the end. Dad wanted to name me after a g-g-g-g-g grandmother of his, using her actual name, popular in the 1700s, which was a bit old fashioned by the 1960s. Mum wanted an updated version of the name. I've always been sad that Dad didn't insist. But they compromised on a completely different name, then always used a version in another language - it's on my passport, driver's license, etc.

ApolloandDaphne · 20/08/2023 18:55

My grans were both Isabella. My DM thought that was a very old fashioned name and so my middle name is Isabel. Oh how she laughs at how popular Isabella is.

Wheresthebloomingsummersunshine · 20/08/2023 18:57

Dad was a musical film buff, so siblings and I named after names in 50s songs and film!

TheFormidableMrsC · 20/08/2023 19:52

I was named after a model colleague of my mother's who went on to be a Bond girl. It was very exotic when I was born but is more common now (I'm in my 50's). I like my name.

afaloren · 20/08/2023 19:54

No but my niece is named after me which is lovely

Serena1977 · 20/08/2023 20:12

I am named after an actress my dm watched on telly when on maternity leave.

My dd is named after the Queen because she was born in the diamond jubilee year and conceived on the long weekend for W & K's wedding 🤣

Persephonegoddess · 20/08/2023 20:13

I'm named after a character on a 70's tv show

continentallentil · 20/08/2023 20:17

Middle names are family names - one granny and the name all the women have on one side of the family.

I sort of think middle names should be family names or have some other purpose

My first name is the character in novel my mother loved, she was devastated to find out it was very very popular..

Are you Scottish?

I remember a lot of old lady Isabellas when I was there.
