I thought Dom Nichols' interpretation of the Poland situation on yesterday's Ukraine the latest podcase was interesting. Essentially suggesting that he thinks the media have played into the story a bit and made it something it isn't really. As per Duck's update above he said that we can expect Poland to fulfil its previous commitments but that frankly it probably doesn't have a huge amount more to give at this stage and equally there will be a bit of playing hardline politics given the upcoming election.

He did point out that since Storm Shadow the UK haven't announced anything further either and no one is jumping up and down suggesting that the UK are withdrawing support.

Surely not......🙄

Actually if that's the case 😉that is really unhelpful ..... but hey, it's all about clicks and circulation figures these days...

With regard to this point this piece in Kiev Independent highlights just how slow the pace is! Abrams tanks promised in January 2022, approved in August of the same year - delivered next week! Hopefully - 1 year 10 months from announcement to delivery FFS 🤦‍♀️

U.S. President Joe Biden announced at a on Sept. 21 that the first tranche of U.S. Abrams tanks will be delivered to Ukraine next week.
The shipment of tanks will be part of a larger package that includes ammunition, anti-tank weapons, and artillery. Biden also added that the U.S. is focused on “strengthening Ukraine’s air defense capabilities."
His comments occurred during a bilateral meeting with President Volodomyr Zelensky, who was traveling to the U.S., his second visit there since the beginning of the full-scale invasion.
The decision to deliver 31 Abrams tanks was first announced in January 2022, and the first batch of 10 was approved on Aug. 7.

Sorry I thought that link was to the Kiev Independent article but it's actually to the speeches made by Biden and Zelensky during their meeting yesterday.

On a side point though Biden is sounding increasingly doddery and there's a lot of press devoted to a possible decline in his mental acuity - is he really the best bet to run against Trump (or hopefully someone else) next year? Have the Democrats run out of time to replace him with another runner and rider or do the Americans think he's the best option?

He's been doddery for some time and I do constantly have to remind myself that he has a speech impediment which often impacts his ability to speak effectively, also something that can be impacted by tiredness etc and I imagine UN General Assembly week and the foreign travel he has been doing lately will be taking its toll.

In terms of a different Democratic candidate I think that's pretty unlikely, if not impossible, at this stage barring any significant decline in his health or him choosing not to run. Must remember too that the US media is already in election campaign mode and that the Republican leaning publications will be picking up on every and all examples of Biden acting anything other than presidential.

I suppose at least he doesn't have something like 91 criminal indictments at this point......

https://www.understandingwar.org/backgrounder/russian-offensive-campaign-assessment-september-21-2023

Key Takeaways:

  • Ukrainian armored vehicles are operating beyond the final line of the Russian defensive layer that Ukrainian forces in western Zaporizhia Oblast are currently penetrating, although ISW is not yet prepared to assess that Ukrainian forces have broken fully through this Russian defensive layer. [Enouraging news. WSJ also reported this]* *
  • Russian forces currently defending in western Zaporizhia Oblast have been unable to prevent Ukrainian forces from making gradual but steady advances since mid-August.
  • Ukrainian forces conducted a series of drone and missile strikes targeting the Russian airfield near occupied Saky, Crimea, and may have damaged Russian aircraft.
  • Satellite imagery confirms that Ukrainian forces also struck the 744th Communications Center of the Command of the Black Sea Fleet in occupied Crimea on September 20 as part of an apparent Ukrainian effort to target Black Sea Fleet facilities.
  • Russian forces conducted a notably large series of missile strikes against Ukraine on the night of September 20 to 21, likely to correspond with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky’s visit to the United States.
  • The Kremlin continues to seek to intensify divisions between Ukraine and its Central European partners following Russia’s withdrawal from the Black Sea Grain Initiative.
  • The Russian State Duma will reportedly propose a bill allowing the Russian National Guard (Rosgvardia) to include volunteer formations amid continued rumors about the Wagner Group operating alongside Rosgvardia.
  • The Kremlin is reportedly pushing propaganda narratives that highlight Russian artillery and aviation while downplaying the efforts of Russian forces conducting ground operations, likely in order to avoid discussion of Russian personnel losses and poor counterbattery capabilities.
  • The Kremlin is likely aiming to blame Armenian leadership and the West for Azerbaijan’s recent military operation into Nagorno-Karabakh.
  • Russian forces conducted offensive operations along the Kupyansk-Svatove-Kreminna line, near Bakhmut, along the Avdiivka-Donetsk City line, in the western Donetsk-eastern Zaporizhia Oblast border area, and in western Zaporizhia Oblast but did not advance.

C&P of a Tweet (?X) by journalist Illia Ponomarenko ..apologies if the link has already been provided upthread, I may have missed it:

Illia Ponomarenko

"Can you give up any part of Ukraine for peace?"

Very seriously one of the silliest and the most childish questions one can ask nowadays.

And not just because it simply puts us in a world where a sovereign nation, a target of large-scale military aggression and the biggest war of conquest since WWII, is being pressured into the betrayal of a huge part of its own territory and people "for the sake of peace", and that is being done as some perverted form of high moral ground.

And not just because it puts us in a world where any warmongering regime, especially those having the bomb or moving towards having one, is officially encouraged and welcome to extort everything and anything they want, "or else!"

It's a world in which high-minded pseudo-intellectuals think the freedom and independence of a 40-million nation are somewhat of lesser value than their beloved fear of "nuclear escalation" they have licked all over for years.

It's silly because such a naive approach just doesn't work.

No, you won't "give peace a chance" by just forcing Ukraine into giving up of 20% of its territory (or 10%, or 50%, or 80%, whatever).

Maybe we should give up Florida to Vladimir V. Putin of Russia "for the sake of peace?" Or maybe the Lake Como area?

No? Why not?

In the lore of today's Kremlin propaganda, the current war in Ukraine is not about just Ukraine but the entire West, America & NATO (oh yeah, they're too chauvinistic to be losing the war to those dirty khokhols alone).

Of course, it's extremely naive to think that giving Putin Zaporizhia or Dnipro for now would somehow make him stop. (I think once upon a time there was a guy with whom a similar thing didn't work out).

Because it's not a lawsuit in which a rancho owner next door disputes your legal ownership over a patch of land between your households.

Putin & his cronies don't give a shit about Donetsk, Luhansk, Kherson, Kyiv, Bakmut/Mariupol you name it. Territorial grabs are nothing but just an instrument.

HE NEEDS WAR AS SUCH.

He needs never-ending confrontation, international isolation, the besieged fortress of mother Russia, hatred, division, Cold War 2.0, and the state of 10 seconds to midnight forevermore.

If things had been as planned on February 24, with Ukraine crushed and Kyiv taken within 3 days, it would have been a brilliant triumph.

The vast majority of the Russian population would have been ecstatic about the new conquest. But similarly to the Crimea effect of 2014, the euphoria would evaporate before too long.

The Crimean appeasement morphed into a bloodletting war of Donbas. The West's desire to put its head in the sand via the Minsk Accords ended up being February 24, 2022.

Who would have been next soon if things went as planned those days?

THE KREMLIN CAN'T CARRY ON WITHOUT IGNITING NEW WARS AGAIN AND AGAIN.

Yet another attempt to twist Ukraine's hands into a "concession for the sake of peace" will again result in nothing but a short respite -- and then an even more catastrophic war.

If you seriously think this war can be ended by just giving Putin what he wants AGAIN, I can only suggest that you try to grow up and see some real life.

KREMLIN WARS WILL NOT STOP UNTIL WE STOP THE KREMLIN.

But if you seriously ask things like "Can you give up any part of Ukraine for peace?" knowing what really stands behind that -- you could just have some guts to admit that you don't care about "peace" and you just need to get rid of this annoying problem for now and keep comfortably feeding the crocodile hoping that it will eat you last.

I hadn't read the article @notimagain but I couldn't agree more.

Iirc Putin has created an easily-winnable war every single time he comes up for re-election. He thought Ukraine would be winnable in 3 days, too.

Media: US to send small number of ATACMS to Ukraine. U.S. President Joe Biden had told his Ukrainian counterpart Volodymyr Zelensky that Washington would provide Ukraine with a small number of long-range ATACMS missiles, NBC News reported on Sept. 22, citing three U.S. officials and a Congressional official familiar with the matter.

(I think this needs to be further confirmed, and no info on what 'small number' is)

https://twitter.com/KyivIndependent

MissConducUS · 22/09/2023 18:15

ducks, the initial number is almost irrelevant. The fact that any are coming forces the Russians to move assets further from the front and out of range of the ATACMS or risk losing them. It also puts new static targets at risk, like ports and airfields. This is the Russian Navy's worst nightmare.

Here's the coverage from the WSJ. I strongly suspected this would come out of the recent meeting between Biden and Zelensky.

Biden Told Zelensky U.S. Is Willing to Provide Long-Range ATACMS Missiles - Small number of the missiles will be sent to Ukraine initially and more could come later

Updated Sept. 22, 2023 12:18 pm ET

WASHINGTON—President Biden has told Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky that he is willing to provide advanced long-range, surface-to-surface missiles to help Kyiv with its counteroffensive, U.S. officials say.

Officials said that a small number of missiles from the U.S. Army Tactical Missile System, or ATACMS, will be sent in coming weeks and more could be provided later.

Ukraine has long sought the missiles, which could blast Russian supply lines, logistics depots and headquarters far behind the front lines. Their importance for Kyiv has grown since supplies of long-range cruise missiles from the British and French have begun to dwindle.

The U.S. provision of ATACMS could also encourage Germany to provide its Taurus long-range cruise missile. Berlin has indicated that it prefers to move with Washington in providing new types of military aid.

Biden and Zelensky met at the White House Thursday to discuss Ukraine’s military needs and the state of Kyiv’s counteroffensive. Biden’s promise to Zelensky was previously reported by NBC News.

MissConducUS · 22/09/2023 19:45

The ATACMS are going to be much harder for Russian air defenses to stop as well. A typical ATACMS attach profile would be to boost to 50,000 feet or so (about nine miles) and then descend straight down on the target at Mach 3 or better. Good luck intercepting those, Ivan.

Because of this, ATACMS will give the Ukrainians more successful hits than the same number of Storm Shadow missiles, which are subsonic.

Yeah, plenty of pro-Russians mock Ukrainians as beggars. Given they steal, rape, torture, kidnap and murder, who cares what they think?

Course, they've been going cap in hand to the only two countries in the world who support them, Iran and North Korea begging for arms, and they've been selling their oil etc at a huge loss. The last figure I saw was in the many billions loss, though I can't remember the exact number atm. 4 billion? 40? As the article is behind a paywall, summary below:

The decoy weapons ‎leading Russian forces ‎astray in Ukraine

Staff at Ukraine’s largest steelmaker Metinvest Steelmaker construct a Potemkin army of Soviet tanks, ‎American howitzers and radars from wood and plastic

They tap into a long military tradition of decoys — luring Russia into wasting expensive resources destroying it.‎ Metinvest has so far supplied more than 250 decoy ‎weapons and pieces of equipment, or 10 to 15 items ‎per month.‎

Russia also has a decoy force of inflatable MiG-31 fighter ‎jets, S-300 missile systems and battle tanks. The Ukrainians have ‎poked fun at them for deflating on the battlefield. ‎[lol]

The knock-offs made by engineers at Metinvest are more sophisticated.‎ They strive for “maximum authenticity” while producing the fakes as cheaply as possible. Everything lying around the Metinvest factory is used: plastic tubes, foam blocks, used tyres, scrap wood and metal.‎ Even up close, the decoys are nearly indistinguishable from the real ‎weapons and equipment they depict, an impressive feat considering staff have never been to the frontline.

How did they find the specs? By googling them on the internet. To achieve this realism, Metinvest’s workers study all the physical parameters of real military equipment using open-source information and created preliminary designs, reproducing all the subtleties of the original equipment down to the placement of nuts and bolts.‎

Like the actual weaponry being used in Ukraine, the fakes undergo ‎constant development. Manufacturers constantly “update” their ‎designs and broaden their catalogue to fit the soldiers’ needs as new ‎western weapon systems arrive.‎

A lifelike Ukrainian D20 howitzer takes four days to produce, while an American M777 howitzer takes ‎14 days, a worker says. A Sentinel A4 radar copy requires up to three weeks, while the 35D6M radar is more complicated and can take a month.‎

Success is measured by how quickly the decoys are destroyed. “When they sit for too long we know we need to change the design.”‎

The cost of each is between a few hundred and a few thousand euros ‎‎— significantly cheaper than the sophisticated missiles, rockets and ‎drones the Russians use to destroy them.‎ ‎“Recently, Russian forces fired Kh-35 missiles with a cost of around ‎€1mn to destroy a decoy radar system. We spent $1,000 on the decoy.

[No wonder Russia thinks they destroyed so many HIMARS. Gotcha.]

First image: Among the decoys is a Ukrainian 35D6M radar system. It can take a month to build
Second image: Howitzers are among the fakes produced. Even up close, the decoys are near indistinguishable from the real ‎weapons
