Conditioner - le shock!

I know this is probably stuff you learn when you’re 12 but I’ve never had to use conditioner. My hairs always been severely oily and it’s just never been a thing.

Over the last few months maybe couple of years my hairs got really frizzy and dry when I let it air dry. I’ve never really thought much of it until yesterday when I actually blow dried it and I still looked like Hagrid 😪

I thought I’d give conditioner a whirl, nothing fancy just the 3 min miracle from boots, think it’s was £2.99. Washed my hair before bed which I never do because then it definitely goes wild and oh.my.god I actually can’t believe the difference????? It’s like I’ve gone to the salon. It’s so smooth and straight. I’m very embarrassed it’s taken me this long (am 35)

Does everyone use a conditioner then I assume?

I always use conditioner and have done for years. My hair has always been dry.

yogasaurus · 20/08/2023 08:10

I couldn’t brush my hair without conditioner

Floopyfloop · 20/08/2023 08:11

God I would look a ginger version of Roseanne Roseannadanna if I didn’t condition!

I couldn’t brush my hair without conditioner

I wouldn't be able to see through the hedge on my head without conditioner 😂
@PeachesoutinGeorgia enjoy your new hair!

Floopyfloop · 20/08/2023 08:12

My mum never buys it or uses it so you are not alone! I have to take some with me when I visit!

MrsDeaconClaybourne · 20/08/2023 08:12

I've got thick curly hair so always use conditioner now. I can remember using it for the first time though when I was about 10 and discovered it was a thing. It was amazing! 3 minute miracle is great stuff.

Poppins2016 · 20/08/2023 08:13

I wouldn't be able to brush my hair without conditioner. I've always used it!

DisforDarkChocolate · 20/08/2023 08:15

I didn't have to use conditioner until my late 40's, it's still oily but gets drier on the ends.

Delphigirl · 20/08/2023 08:15

I only use conditioner, not shampoo!

LateSummerLobelia · 20/08/2023 08:16

Conditioner always. I have very fine hair but it becomes a brittle birds nest without. I am lucky though- I can use the cheapo 79 pence version from Aldi (but I use ALOT) and that works well with my hair.

MikeRafone · 20/08/2023 08:16

My hair is cut short and I visit the hairdressers every 6/8 weeks. My hair is in really good condition, even with highlights it’s not damaged so I don’t use conditioner.

on the occasions when I have it has made my hair limp

Tilllly · 20/08/2023 08:17

That sounds like an intensive conditioner
I use that every week or two
Then a bog standard one each time I wash my hair

Whatoflife · 20/08/2023 08:19

I only use conditioner and not shampoo! (Curly hair)

Coastalcreeksider · 20/08/2023 08:19

I only use conditioner every now and then, my hair goes a bit limp if I use it too much. I have very fine, highlighted hair. I do use Colorplex and leave it in for about 20 minutes then rinse out if I think it's a bit dry on the ends, so probably every fortnight.

I've also started using Kerastase products, that seems to have made a difference to my hair too.

PetitPorpoise · 20/08/2023 08:19

My hair goes 'squeaky' if I don't use conditioner.

The thing I've learned to do over recent years is to wash my hair twice as well. I apply a little bit of shampoo to my roots only and really work it into my scalp. The purpose of this is to remove the grease. I then rinse it off and then apply shampoo again. The difference in the lather is really noticeable because the grease has been removed.

I only add conditioner from about ear level down, because I have fine hair and so avoid anything that will flatten my roots.

I’m old enough to remember the time of BC…Before Conditioners! I remember the first were a choice between the blue bottle & the pink bottle…maybe called super soft or similar. The difference it made to my ‘parted down the middle air dryer’ hair was revolutionary!
ithink I must have now spent enough on every conditioner under the sun to buy another house!
My thoughts….all pretty much the same because when you read the label the ingredients are mostly water, silicone stuff, water softeners, preservatives and maybe 0.05 ‘hereby’ stuff!
Off now to wash & condition my luscious locks with either keratase (?15 a bottle) or Boots own make at 99p a bottle. I’ll bet no one can tell the difference!

LuluBay · 20/08/2023 08:27

I do but as my hair is fairly fine just on the ends or the part that would be in ponytail.

rileynexttime · 20/08/2023 08:28

If you find conditioner makes hair limp look for one that is silicone free. Was a revelation for me.

TheChosenTwo · 20/08/2023 08:29

Generally I shampoo my roots twice and condition the ends.
Sometimes I only shampoo once but depends on how my hair is.

Sceptre86 · 20/08/2023 08:32

I resemble Hagrid without conditioner. Its a must for me.

Tiddlywinks63 · 20/08/2023 08:33

I never use conditioner, it only gets used at the hairdresser’s.
My hair is fine, conditioners make it lank and flyaway.

VisionsOfSplendour · 20/08/2023 08:35

Im not sure I've ever had a conversation with anyone about conditioner but if asked I'd have assumed that everyone uses it. I'd not be able to brush my wet hair without it

Did you not notice it next to the shampoo on the shelves, who did you think it was for?

orangeclubsarebest · 20/08/2023 08:36

I have thick, dry hair so always use conditioner and do a mask once a week. It would be a birds nest if I didn't.

PeachesoutinGeorgia · 20/08/2023 08:43

@VisionsOfSplendour I can’t even like I was always just confused and always SO confused why they were the same size as the shampoo 😅

@PeachesoutinGeorgia I never needed conditioner until I hit 40yo. I have to use it now.
I also find I have to use a mask ocassionally now too cos my hair - unless I have keratin straightening - gets shockingly tangled.
