Conditioner - le shock!

I know this is probably stuff you learn when you’re 12 but I’ve never had to use conditioner. My hairs always been severely oily and it’s just never been a thing.

Over the last few months maybe couple of years my hairs got really frizzy and dry when I let it air dry. I’ve never really thought much of it until yesterday when I actually blow dried it and I still looked like Hagrid 😪

I thought I’d give conditioner a whirl, nothing fancy just the 3 min miracle from boots, think it’s was £2.99. Washed my hair before bed which I never do because then it definitely goes wild and oh.my.god I actually can’t believe the difference????? It’s like I’ve gone to the salon. It’s so smooth and straight. I’m very embarrassed it’s taken me this long (am 35)

Does everyone use a conditioner then I assume?

Ahh @PeachesoutinGeorgia ! I love this.

Flickersy · 20/08/2023 08:51

I have fine hair and if I use conditioner I find my hair goes greasy and limp much more quickly, so I tend not to use it unless I feel my hairs a bit dry.

Everyone is different.

I've used conditioner every day since I was a child.

The key is very much to find the right on me for you, in terms of heavy/lightness. And avoid roots.

Alphabetica · 20/08/2023 09:18

There was lady on a thread recently who was adamant conditioner was a con and it makes no difference. I'm not sure how she came to that conclusion when so many of us know what our hair is like with and without conditioner. I'd imagine the vast majority of women use it, especially women of your (my) age OP who have never know a time without it. Not using it would seem as unusual as never wearing deodorant or shower gel to me!

Mischance · 20/08/2023 09:20

Interesting stuff conditioner. We wash our hair and remove all the oils, then use conditioner to put them back!

RampantIvy · 20/08/2023 09:24

I never use shower gel. Bar soap all the way.

AlltheFs · 20/08/2023 09:26

I have always had to use it, my hair is really thick and completely awful without it.

I can’t get it anywhere near the roots though.

I ran out the other week and had a couple
of days without it. The difference was staggering and I only use cheap conditioner.

WandaWonder · 20/08/2023 09:26

I don't use it but the cheap stuff is great for getting nits out

LuckOfTheDrawer · 20/08/2023 09:28

Men don't tend to use it though, do they? Is that because they usually have short hair?

Foxblue · 20/08/2023 09:29

Ooh this reminds me of the 20 years I spent thinking any kind of 'de-tangling' or 'heat protectant' or 'leave in conditioner' spray was a colossal waste of money. Then used some on my fine, thin hair......turns out you don't need to yank and pull your way through your hair with a brush while it's wet.... or deal with the ends looking fuzzy.
Hair oil has also been a revelation!!

I only use conditioner, not shampoo!

Me too.

MorrisZapp · 20/08/2023 09:35

The two female singers in the Human League were asked in Jackie magazine to give a beauty tip each. Joanne (dark hair) said condition your hair every time you wash it. If anyone can remember what Suzanne (blonde hair) said I'll bung them a fiver.

They didn't ask Phil but I bet he's a goldmine too.

Threenow · 20/08/2023 09:40

I don't even want to think what my hair would look like without conditioner 😬I need a leave-in conditioner as well or my hair just looks fluffy.

Tracker1234 · 20/08/2023 09:41

I have fairly fine hair and always use a light conditioner. If I didn’t it would look like I had been in a fight! I have curl and not in a good way. I washed the car yesterday and it rained, I was sweating buckets and then I looked in the mirror when I had finished…. I had to hide from everyone.

But tomorrow is another day and I have just had a shower and hair back to normal.

snowballsinhell · 20/08/2023 09:48

I wash my hair every day (I know, I know)

I condition it maybe 3 times a week

Sunday is Philip Kingsley Elasticizer day

Well yes I do actually too. Anything to wash your body with is what I meant I suppose.

ickky · 20/08/2023 09:48

Rinse conditioner out with cold water, it closes the little shafts on your hair, making it smoother, this works even without conditioner.

CatusFlatus · 20/08/2023 09:54

Stopped using it a few years ago and it's made literally no difference to my hair. Saved money and time. I'm fortunate to have hair that's easy to care for though. I'm sure it's helpful for others.

nillionaire · 20/08/2023 10:08

I have fine but very thick Scandinavian wavy hair. I need conditioner, the difference Kerastase products make is astounding.

me too

TicTac80 · 20/08/2023 10:34

As a kid (in the ME), we had Aleppo soap to wash with (body and hair), and then either a tiny bit of olive oil or coconut oil for conditioner. I remember being amazed that there was actual bottles of shampoo and conditioner (with exciting fragrances/colours etc) that could be brought in the shops - of course, they would have been available for decades, but Mum just used Aleppo soap.

Now, I've done full circle and have gone back to using Aleppo and then either coconut oil or olive oil! 😂

gingercat02 · 20/08/2023 10:54

I always did from teenage (I'm 54), but we are trying really hard to use less plastic, so we went to shampoo bars, I never found a good conditioner bar, so I just stopped. Honestly, my hair is no different at all!

notprincehamlet · 20/08/2023 11:01

I'd have to go up several hat sizes if I didn't use conditioner
