Conditioner - le shock!

I know this is probably stuff you learn when you’re 12 but I’ve never had to use conditioner. My hairs always been severely oily and it’s just never been a thing.

Over the last few months maybe couple of years my hairs got really frizzy and dry when I let it air dry. I’ve never really thought much of it until yesterday when I actually blow dried it and I still looked like Hagrid 😪

I thought I’d give conditioner a whirl, nothing fancy just the 3 min miracle from boots, think it’s was £2.99. Washed my hair before bed which I never do because then it definitely goes wild and oh.my.god I actually can’t believe the difference????? It’s like I’ve gone to the salon. It’s so smooth and straight. I’m very embarrassed it’s taken me this long (am 35)

Does everyone use a conditioner then I assume?

@Gall10 when was this? I cant imagine a world without conditioner!

Bbq1 · 20/08/2023 11:29

I have used dry ends, greasy roots conditioner for years now and i really notice the difference the occasional days i skip it. I have naturally curly hair that i very rarely blow dry. Conditioner makes my hair much more manageable when dry and gives a smoother foundation for serum and mousse.

No I've never used it or needed it. My hair is quite fine and gets greasy easily. I only use it after I've dyed my hair to touch up the odd grey.

I have long straight hair and so do my DCs and I have trained them to use conditioner on every wash (even DS) - I comb it through with a wide-toothed comb and it makes a lot of difference to me. On holiday I was in one of those hotels with the pump dispensers in the shower and, feeling lavish because it wasn’t mine, I shampooed twice and used loads of conditioner and my hair looked and felt great!

I mean I have used it but not as a regular thing. I've always found my hair greasy and heavy feeling after using it.

I use more conditioner than shampoo (wavy hair)

Tessisme · 20/08/2023 11:54

My mum started using conditioner on my hair when I was still young enough for her to be washing my hair while I was in the bath! This was in the early 70s. I hated the tugging sensation of having the conditioner pulled through compared to the lovely feeling of shampoo being lathered on my hair. It was a brown bottle, possibly Crème Silk or something. It smelt very sweet like vanilla and I remember being tempted to taste it😆

My hair would be full of assorted wildlife if I didn't use conditioner. It's oily at the scalp and dry at the ends with a charming combination of frizzy waves and coils and straight bits. Like two people's hair on the one head!!

One of my deepest pleasures is lovely shampoo and conditioner, as you can treat yourself for relatively little! I wash my hair every day, as it's long, and have done every since I was old enough to do it myself as if I don't I always feel slightly dirty. I adore the feeling of clean hair. Often leave out to dry naturally unless in a rush. Combing through conditioner makes it possible! I'm fond of lovely smelling Jo Malone nettle but also beautiful brunette and elvive. Tend to rotate them so the hair and I don't get bored. Best is actually tresemme which is really cheap but makes hair fabulously shiny!

We didn’t have conditioner when I was very young. When eventually I did start using it, it was Creme Silk and what a difference it made! My hair is very thick, coarse and curly so if I don’t use it, I look like I’ve been dragged through a hedge.

JesusMaryAndJosephAndTheWeeDon · 20/08/2023 12:22

I can't imagine trying to brush my hair without a shit tonne of conditioner! It would be agony and take ages.

JustKeepSlimming · 20/08/2023 12:24

When I was young, my mum would always condition my sister's hair but not mine. She said it was because it didn't make any difference to mine, but i suspect it was because my hair was really thick and it was hard enough just to wash it, let alone condition it.

Anyway, at university I was buying shampoo one day and noticed that conditioner was only about 50p or something (this was in the late 90's) so bought a bottle, and like you my mind was blown!!

I also recently discovered hair masks, which add a whole new level of wondrousness!

I'd have to go up several hat sizes if I didn't use conditioner

Snort 😂This is like the good old days of MN, before it got really grumpy.

OnedayIwillfeelfree · 20/08/2023 21:44

I f I have ever run out of conditioner, fabric conditioner is a good substitute.

FussyPud · 20/08/2023 22:18

I have discovered silicone free shampoo and conditioner, and it has revolutionised the texture of my hair.

Thecomfortador · 20/08/2023 22:59

I have phases of using conditioner, standing in boots for ages deciding what to buy, then I'll use it for maybe a week and generally after that can't be bothered with it. I have wavyvish hair, fairly thick and I'm not entirely sure what difference it makes. If you wash it out it just seems the same as normal, if you don't it seems greasy. Probably means I don't need it. But then I don't do anything with my hair really other than tie it in a low pony tail, so not like I spend hours on styling it anyway.
