Not only did Lucy Letby kill and badly hurt babies…

She also prepared the memory boxes for parents of the dead children. Can you imagine having a memory box with photos and footprints of your dead child which had been taken by his or her merger?

That goes way beyond the murder. I just don't know how the families are coping.

I can't find the link now but it was reported in the German press. I can assure you that I am not making it up.

In any event it's only tangentially relevant to the discussion. Someone thought that prison would be too good for her - it definitely won't be, and not even as "good" as prisons on the Continent. Despite the best efforts of the Daily Mail to say otherwise, UK prisons are not like holiday camps. Letby will suffer, unless she does herself in, or has grounds for appeal that are accepted and she is released. The former seems more likely.

enchantedsquirrelwood · 21/08/2023 14:34

Actually I've found it - I remembered that Oliver Moody, the Times correspondent in Berlin got into a discussion about whether the OLG was a "high court" so I was able to find the link:

Gefängnisse zu schlecht: Keine Auslieferung an UK

Das OLG Karlsruhe hat im Fall eines mit Kokain handelnden Albaners entschieden, dass der nicht nach Großbritannien ausgeliefert werden darf.

Does a while life order actually mean life then, as in, she will be in prison forever until the day she dies?

Yes. Same as Myra Hindley and Rose West.

huggiess · 21/08/2023 14:43

Ahh, good ! Those poor babies and their families, absolute sicko deserves all she gets

Redavocadoes · 21/08/2023 14:44

The Nurse on Netflix is a dramatisation of a similar story in Denmark, except in that case it was adult patients and a desire for attention and to be seen as the hero doing CPR and saving the day.

huggiess · 21/08/2023 14:47

What I can't get over aswell is she was there watching the parents absolutely fall apart once they had lost their babies, she was there for those moments and it makes you wonder was she getting a kick out of seeing that...
It makes my skin crawl thinking of her enjoying the grief

Yes it does

TheSkull · 21/08/2023 15:34

Does anyone else think she’ll more than likely be killed in prison by other inmates?

I don't I think she will be too protected I always hope someone will get savannah brockhill but I doubt they will all the other women killers are still alive

TheSkull · 21/08/2023 15:41

Mmm true. I can imagine officers turning a blind eye in these circs. Utterly heinous and not a shred of remorse.

Laurapb88 · 21/08/2023 16:20

I hope they do, I hope she's tortured for the rest of her life

TheSkull · 21/08/2023 16:29

Hope so too. Let her live the nightmare

riceuten · 21/08/2023 16:35

It didn't take the far right long to exploit this terrible situation - now GB News are calling for the return of the death penalty for her - I absolutely despair. Oh, and Lucy Letby's PARENTS have been receiving death threats.

LodiDodi · 21/08/2023 16:35

It's rarer to have a symmetrical face than it is a gaurly asymmetrical one which most people have. In any case, she's vile. Inside and out.

riceuten · 21/08/2023 16:41

LAHallucinations · 20/08/2023 18:35

It's explained here (you need to remove the paywall): https://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/2023/08/18/lucy-letby-court-trial-witnesses-granted-anonymity/

I agree with the arguments in that article. Witnesses shouldn't be allowed to keep their identity hidden, unless there's a threat to life.

And if a witness decides not to testify due to fear of retribution (which may not amount to a threat to life)?

Who decides that ?

Globalfrumpmaster78 · 21/08/2023 16:47

Does anyone know please, at what point is a perpetrator assessed for psychopathy or any other form of mental illness?

Presumably LL has been deemed mentally fit for trial.

But now she has been found guilty, will she go through an assessment to see if she goes to a high category women’s prison or will she go to a closed psychiatrist institution for the criminally insane? How does this process work?

I’m interested because although she outwardly appears sane, if anything devoid of emotion, her actions are obviously far outside what society would categorise as normal.

As an intelligent sane person capable of doing a complex job, she is wholly responsible for making the choices she did that led to the deaths of her vulnerable patients, and she has deliberately manipulated people around her, so there are no mitigating factors whatsoever, but what I am asking is; if someone is guilty of killing many babies because they are bored or they enjoy feeling powerful, can they at the same time still officially be categorised as sane?

MumGMT · 21/08/2023 17:03

@Globalfrumpmaster78

Yes I think psychopaths etc. are legally considered sane.

Thanks MumGMT it’s quite chilling that they are legally considered sane. In other words, they are capable of knowing the extent of their crimes and yet carry them out anyway. She obviously needs to be locked up.

kerstina · 21/08/2023 17:45

What if she does have undiagnosed autism ? Only asking that as the judge remarked her comments had been callous but if she has autism could that explain her lack of empathy in what she said to the parents ? I guess I am still trying to get my head round it and understand it .

Her father seems to have had rather too much involvement in the disciplinary/grievance procedure, but why blame the parents? She was 25 and an adult.

When do people think that someone is sufficiently grown up not to blame their parents for everything?

As for the whole life tariff, does anyone remember that stupid man who kept trying to get Myra Hindley released? I was so relieved when she died in jail.

determinedtomakethiswork · 18/08/2023 23:01

Don't blame them. They had nothing to do with it. She left home at 18.

I'm not sure about not blaming the parents, actually.

One of the reasons that the managers told the consultants to apologise to her was "Her father... had threatened to refer them to the General Medical Council unless they withdrew their allegations and welcomed her back."

https://www.theguardian.com/uk-news/2023/aug/19/trust-me-im-a-nurse-why-wasnt-lucy-letby-stopped-as-months-of-went-by

I think her parents were/are as much in denial as she is, and that seems to me like it's been actively unhelpful - they've "protected" their own child at the cost of other people's children...

Part of the prosecution case was that she searched the bereaved parents on FB afterwards THOUSANDS of times, and on the anniversaries of the deaths, on Christmas day etc. Presumably she got a thrill from seeing them post their grief. It's very upsetting.

Why indeed do idiots blame the parents - but there are plenty of morons out there who do.

So, for this, they deserve death threats ? Oh, the irony....
