The Europeans do it so why don’t we??

Why do us Brits seem to have such an aversion to using suppositories compared to Europeans?

I myself have used glycerin suppositories when I’m constipated, and my daughter has had to have paracetamol ones when she can’t keep anything down with sick bugs etc. I just pop some rubber gloves on and a dab of vaseline and get on with it. Ok admittedly my daughter doesn’t love it (and neither do I) but she knows it helps her get better more quickly.

My husband grew up in France and always finds it strange that they aren’t used more commonly here, people of all ages use them over there for all matter of ailments.

Are we just too delicate to deal with bottoms??

We won't use bidets either

Or have cheese as a meal

Whataretheodds · 18/08/2023 15:27

Do they actually work more quickly?

I can chug some paracetamol and water while sitting at my desk. Suppository not so much.

They're a pain in the arse.

I would have to be totally desperate to be arsed (pun intended) with that.

Clymene · 18/08/2023 15:31

I think we're very squeamish.

And yes, they work much more quickly than orally taken meds.

😂 <snort>

I'm in Ireland and they are definitely used more here for young children than in the UK. Ds has ASD and used to have febrile convulsions and a temp that spiked with every little cold, he refused paracetamol/ibuprofen from a spoon and it was distressing for us all. A quick suppository and the job was done with no tears and they work really quickly too. They were a life saver for us when he was small.

😂

Moonberri · 18/08/2023 15:34

I was given some kind of painkilling suppository when I had appendicitis. Was just given it and told to do it myself. Seems to work quicker than the oral route. Also helpful when you're puking in pain.

RitzyMcFitzy · 18/08/2023 15:36

I had no idea what the Europeans do so why don't we.

I hoped for something glamorous, like only wearing black silk underwear.

Something daring like taking a younger lover.

Something exciting like zorbing naked down the alps.

But no, it's suppositories Sad

gamerchick · 18/08/2023 15:37

They do work quicker

But I don't want to shove stuff up mine or my kids arses.

Clavinova · 18/08/2023 15:39

Or have cheese as a meal

I had cheese as a meal in a wine bar yesterday - with chocolate cheesecake for dessert!

tescocreditcard · 18/08/2023 15:40

Joking aside, they are useful if you're puking. Otherwise, don't think I could be bothered for the sake of something working 5-10 minutes earlier.

ArseInTheCoOpWindow · 18/08/2023 15:41

I suggested Dd use a suppository when she had constipation.

’That’s not ever going to happen’ was her reply🤷🏻‍♀️

tescocreditcard · 18/08/2023 15:41

Plus you can't do it in public.

Smashingwatermelons · 18/08/2023 15:44

As a European living in the UK, I gave my dd suppositories instead of calpol - I didn’t think something so pink could be healthy for my pure clean bf baby (yes…pfb!)

Runnersandtoms · 18/08/2023 15:45

The French also take temperature up the arse instead of in the ear or under the armpit or tongue. Another habit I'm not keen to copy. 😆

TammyJones · 18/08/2023 15:46

I love my bidet
When we remodel our bathroom i will have one.

Blingstar · 18/08/2023 15:51

what is your cheese meal of choice? @Gnomegnomegnome @Moonberri

Toddlerteaplease · 18/08/2023 15:52

Paracetamol suppositories are great for toddlers who refuse point black to take calpol.
