The Europeans do it so why don’t we??

Why do us Brits seem to have such an aversion to using suppositories compared to Europeans?

I myself have used glycerin suppositories when I’m constipated, and my daughter has had to have paracetamol ones when she can’t keep anything down with sick bugs etc. I just pop some rubber gloves on and a dab of vaseline and get on with it. Ok admittedly my daughter doesn’t love it (and neither do I) but she knows it helps her get better more quickly.

My husband grew up in France and always finds it strange that they aren’t used more commonly here, people of all ages use them over there for all matter of ailments.

Are we just too delicate to deal with bottoms??

Honestly, I would be wary about posting on the subject of putting stuff up your/your children's bums. The OP seems to have only ever made this one post on MN so far.

Yy this thread is turning into a poo troll and paedo's paradise. And MN always has a combination of both especially on Fridays.

They're a pain in the arse.

😂
Think this wins MN quote of the day.

The French (I was brought up in France) seem to love anything to do with bottoms. And yes, it is a far more efficient way of getting (legal!) drugs into your system.

NeverDropYourMooncup · 18/08/2023 18:35

It's only anecdotally, but I have an almost unerring ability to chuck my guts up whenever prescribed medication (when I'm not allergic to it). At one point I did ask if there was any chance of a suppository form and the GP I saw was quite surprised and said 'people don't usually ask for it over here'.

I'm realistic, I want medication absorbed quickly, in a lower effective dose and bypassing the digestive system and my stupid, super-overreactive skin as much as possible - if that's by self administered injection or from a nurse if I must, I'm fine with that, but failing this, up the arse is the next best thing.

Tinkerbyebye · 18/08/2023 18:37

@MatildaM92

we are European. Britain is part of Europe. If you are going to make such comments name the actual country, not the continent

SiobhanSharpe · 18/08/2023 18:42

I was quite ill on holiday in France a few years ago, with a really nasty cough.
(you can guess where this is going)
The local pharmacist asked me what I wanted and suggested une suppositoire.
No, no, said I, it's a cough, making a little cough-cough sound. In French.
Apparently, les suppositoires are très efficace.
They were fucking huuuge. Greasy, grey bullets about 4 cm long.
I can't remember if they were efficace or not.

I have cheese as a meal 😋

So do we, quite often.

WalnutBlue · 18/08/2023 18:55

Because shoving fingers up the bum doesn't feel clean and no matter how much you wash them they still smell after.
Also I don't like the feeling of having something stuck up my arse.

  • someone who has unfortunately had to experience this.

IHateWasps · 18/08/2023 15:33

We are Europeans!

clears throat

We're not. That's like saying Mexicans are American because they're on the same continent as the USA. Or that Putin must be Chinese because Russia spans across the European and Asiatic continents. The European continent is not the same as Europe. There's a reason we refer to it as 'the continent', they are a completely different history to us.

Carry on.

Simonjt · 18/08/2023 19:10

No, not something I want to use, and I’m not going to use them on my children, I’ve seen them, they’re huge. For some things my bum is one way traffic only, medication is firmly in the one way traffic only box.

Blackberriesbob · 18/08/2023 16:50

Not to be a pedant but aren't British people also European? I'm not British, so it's no skin off my nose.

I should’ve specified mainland Europe!!

We don't have the same obsession with arseholes that the French have? We just vote them into government instead

😂😂😂

I'm finding discussing suppositories and having cheese as a meal on the same thread a bit off putting. You definitely don't want to muddle those up.

“Why are you in A&E then?” … Erm… cheese related incident

It's always the same isn't it. So much fascination with bottoms.

Do they actually work more quickly?

I can chug some paracetamol and water while sitting at my desk. Suppository not so much.

I’ve always been more of the type to sit back and observe hence the lack of posts from myself. But yes please do be careful x

Riapia · 18/08/2023 19:46

I was prescribed suppositories once.
For all the good they did I may as well have shoved them up my arse.
😉😁😁

What a stinky attitude to have about them 🤪. On a serious note they seem to work brilliantly for some people including myself but not so much others. Think that can be said for most meds though to be honest. X
