The Europeans do it so why don’t we??

Why do us Brits seem to have such an aversion to using suppositories compared to Europeans?

I myself have used glycerin suppositories when I’m constipated, and my daughter has had to have paracetamol ones when she can’t keep anything down with sick bugs etc. I just pop some rubber gloves on and a dab of vaseline and get on with it. Ok admittedly my daughter doesn’t love it (and neither do I) but she knows it helps her get better more quickly.

My husband grew up in France and always finds it strange that they aren’t used more commonly here, people of all ages use them over there for all matter of ailments.

Are we just too delicate to deal with bottoms??

Not to be a pedant but aren't British people also European? I'm not British, so it's no skin off my nose.

Sandysandwich · 18/08/2023 16:52

Surely to ten minutes you win back by having a faster acting route is somewhat lost in public if you have to run off to the toilet every time with a glove.

Plus my mouth is much happier to swallow things

itsmyp4rty · 18/08/2023 16:53

Because I'd rather wait a little time for something to work than have to shove it up my arse?
Why are Europeans so accepting of shoving suppositories up their arses when they could just take it orally seems a far more sensible question to me.

They're a pain in the arse.

😂😂😂😂😂

Littlecovid · 18/08/2023 16:56

I was wondering this earlier this week when I was vomiting and felt as hot as the face of the sun. I’m off to see if I can get some paracetamol ones.

They’re a lot more expensive!

Bums and Fridays seem to go hand in hand.

Why do I have to shove something up my backside just to keep you happy?

I am so hearing the voice of Carrie Bradshaw when I read that sentence.

BitOutOfPractice · 18/08/2023 17:03

We don't have the same obsession with arseholes that the French have? We just vote them into government instead

Or have cheese as a meal

I had cheese as a meal in a wine bar yesterday - with chocolate cheesecake for dessert!

I'd love that in theory but in practice I'd get indigestion.

Lindy2 · 18/08/2023 17:08

I'm finding discussing suppositories and having cheese as a meal on the same thread a bit off putting. You definitely don't want to muddle those up.

pizzaHeart · 18/08/2023 17:14

I think people are deliberately missing the point. No one says to move completely on suppositories but they can be easier available as an option. They practically saved us when DD was tiny baby and refused paracetamol.
Sometimes suppositories work better sometimes tablets or liquid but getting something other than tablets are much more difficult in UK, practically impossible.

Davros · 18/08/2023 17:16

I think the "Europeans" are pill poppers, especially the French. In some countries it might be homeopathic but it's still pill popping.
Also, I don't have an arsehole (tmi) after cancer but I have a stoma, should I shove it in there?

SoSad44 · 18/08/2023 17:16

Imported some from my home country when DD was a baby. She refused all calpol and giving her one was quick and easy. Calpol is some sort of weird market leader in the UK.

I had no idea what the Europeans do so why don't we.

I hoped for something glamorous, like only wearing black silk underwear.

Something daring like taking a younger lover.

Something exciting like zorbing naked down the alps.

But no, it's suppositories Sad

😂

Puzzledandpissedoff · 18/08/2023 17:20

Do they actually work more quickly?

They do if you've got a sicky bug and wouldn't keep oral medication down!!

When younger and even more stupid I was once given these while in France; my spoken French wasn't fluent then so I couldn't ask why the "tablets" were so much bigger than what we'd normally get in the UK
I finished up breaking them into 4 to swallow them ... worked, though Smile

itsgettingweird · 18/08/2023 17:20

Bread and cheese is absolutely a meal!!!

My son was born abroad and used suppositories. But he was a baby/ toddler.

We do have a different attitudes to bodies here. Even down to sunbathing topless.

Oh great, another anus thread.

That made me really laugh 😂

Do Europeans shove cheese up their arse as well? Because i'm a bit confused with the conflation of the two ... Confused

Mummyoflittledragon · 18/08/2023 17:25

I agree having had suppositories whrn I lived abroad. I asked my Gp for some for pain relief and was refused. Only to be used for 7 days apparently.

Whataretheodds · 18/08/2023 15:27

I can chug some paracetamol and water while sitting at my desk. Suppository not so much.

They're brilliant if you have a stomach upset.

DeanElderberry · 18/08/2023 17:29

I remember asking this when one of my aunts was dying - too weak to swallow, not deemed ill enough for a morphine drip. I think policy on painkillers has improved in the twenty years since then but suppositories would have been a godsend (this in Ireland btw, not the UK).

Yes are fast acting as they get absorbs straight into the blood stream. I’ve had some abroad and they are excellent.
