Lucy Letby guilty

BarelyLiterate · 18/08/2023 13:12

Lucy Letby has been convicted of the murder of seven babies and the attempted murder of six more.

My thoughts are with the families of the victims.

Jesus, I’ve just been reading how Dr Stephen Brearey had to repeatedly fight to have his concerns heard with Snr managers & he even felt desperate enough in the end to call his boss & ask for her immediate removal from the ward - but she refused.

Seriously troubling reading as it’s obvious the management team didn’t want to open up the hospital to scrutiny - they literally brushed everything up into one big pile and swept it under the carpet. Shocking. Babies could have been saved had they fucking acted instead of protecting their own sorry arses. They have blood on their hands

The NHS is no different to the Police/Military for closing ranks to protect themselves, the only difference is that the others don't have an army of online sycophants who treat the NHS like a religion and any slight is seen as NHS bashing.

Crowfinch · 18/08/2023 21:14

I'm sure I've read that most serial killers target babies or old people. And that many never get caught.

I wonder whether she ever sees what she did as murder, or whether she thought she was doing them a kindness, as they were so ill. Which would put her in the playing god category.

Or whether, as pp have said, she became addicted to the drama and adrenaline and attention of the seriously ill babies, so kept trying to recreate it.

BeenThereDoneThat101 · 18/08/2023 21:16

The panorama programme said that five other babies died on that unit in the year the alarm was being raised and police are still investigating those.

They’re also investigating other baby deaths.

IMO this is the tip of the ice berg.

I pity her godchildren. I sincerely hope that their mother doesn’t give them the “she’s innocent” speel that she did on the programme. I’m glad she’s never allowed to hear anything about them.

Mojodojocasahaus · 18/08/2023 21:19

I felt really sorry for her friend in that panorama programme she was still adamant (and said their mutual friends were adamant) that she didn’t do it

drpet49 · 18/08/2023 21:21

Pebbledashery · 18/08/2023 21:12

Utterly shocked all her friends are standing by her too!!

I was dumbfounded when the friend, Dawn, came out with that on Panorama! The stupid woman has gone on national tv and declared she won’t ever believe Lucy Letby did this unless Lucy admits it to her herself because she knows Lucy and has grown up with her. The anbsolute arrogance of the friend.

Shame on that woman. Shame on her.

PickledMuffin · 18/08/2023 21:21

If they do find that the others are potentially related to her actions, does she go back to court, or do they add those to her sentence?

LunaandLily · 18/08/2023 21:21

ForTheLoveOfSleep · 18/08/2023 13:25

She didn't appear for the verdict. What a cowardly, psychotic, cunt. I hope they force her to appear for sentencing.

Nailed it @ForTheLoveOfSleep

How dare she. How dare she plead not guilty.

They'd have to be a trial, no one can be convicted without one

They can't just add other alleged deaths to her sentence. They would have to take them (and her) to trial.

tooearlyforthis98 · 18/08/2023 21:23

@PickledMuffin unless she pleaded guilty that is

PickledMuffin · 18/08/2023 21:24

Thanks for the reply. So they will have to check all potential 4000 cases, so this can be some time before it comes to court again. All those families who could be potentially involved in this 😵

Vettrianofan · 18/08/2023 21:24

A more sinister version of Beverly Allitt.

You can't just add to a sentence.

You can try someone for a new crime and give them a separate sentence for that crime if convicted, but in no way can you just add time to someone's tariff! That would be a gross miscarriage of justice.

Beverlysparty · 18/08/2023 21:26

BreadInCaptivity · 18/08/2023 19:55

Yes I feel sorry for her parents as well.

She's an only child, so as well as trying to come to terms with what she did and who they raised, they've also lost the opportunity to be grandparents as she's not coming out of prison anytime soon.

That said, the fact she'll never have the opportunity to have children of her own would seem like an added form of justice.

As to why she did it, unless she confesses we will never know the reasons, though personally I think it's simply because she enjoyed doing it. Not the killing per se but the outcomes of getting attention from colleagues, consoling the families, getting time from her Dr "friend". Basically getting people's attention - bear in mind how very ordinary she presented. This made her special.

Possibly she first experienced this when a baby died of natural causes, but because this was quite a rare event she created the circumstances to experience these feelings again and again.

You are seriously equating the horror of what she has been found guilty of and the massive shock for her parents, with the experience ofparents whose children do not make them grandparents? No words!

Upset12345 · 18/08/2023 21:28

She won't be attacked by other prisoners.

She'll be placed on a wing with vulnerable prisoners who have hurt children as well.

There will be a whole team of prison staff having meetings soon to discuss how they can manage her safety in prison.

This is how it works (unfortunately).

Sillybanana · 18/08/2023 21:28

Venturini · 18/08/2023 19:11

It’s not just that she is a woman. She is a young white woman, blonde, girl next door type. Respectable. All these things influence public opinion. If she was black or brown trust me there wouldn’t be anything like as much questioning of this verdict on threads like these.

So true!!

oakleaffy · 18/08/2023 20:04

Why on earth did they protect a killer in their midst.
Especially innocent babies.

They obvs didn’t know they had a serial murderer nurse on NICU
presumption, assumption, professional conflicts of nursing vs medics, senior nurses protection of their own. Naïve trust. Multiple factors. She presented as innocuous And ordinary . Conscious and unconscious bias Protected her

mumof2many1943 · 18/08/2023 21:33

As an old NICU nurse I am shocked beyond belief. We loved the babies ( I even brought one home) as if they were our own! What a heinous woman like Beverly Allett. May they rot in prison!

SemperIdem · 18/08/2023 21:34

Agree with those who have said that her utterly average, unremarkable exterior fully enabled her to play to conscious and unconscious bias in others, masking the extraordinarily evil things she was doing.

ButterCrackers · 18/08/2023 21:34

So terrible. Prison is not punishment enough. Pure evil.

DameCurlyBassey · 18/08/2023 21:35

r0ck · 18/08/2023 19:52

I agree. Makes me sick.

I think everyone is grieving (of course not with the intensity of the poor parents). One of the stages of grief is shock and disbelief so I wonder if some people just can't comprehend that someone they might also have entrusted with the care of their own children, could do such a thing.

I must admit I have a hard time getting my head round it. Letby's parents will be hysterical with grief and will also not want to believe that their beloved daughter was capable of such acts.

One thing I find really hard is that nobody seems able to explain why she did it.

My heart goes out to those who lost their children, to all their relatives and to the jury who have done amazing work.

I can’t find anything about the consultants being threatened to being referred to the GMC if they went to the police, but even if it’s true, it’s a shit reason for, effectively, putting babies at risk.

Even one of the consultants regrets keeping quiet:

https://www.heraldscotland.com/news/national/23353854.doctor-wishes-gone-straight-police-lucy-letby-concerns/

January 2017

According to sources at the hospital, CEO Tony Chambers and medical director Ian Harvey met with the consultants, saying investigations had been completed and Letby would return to work.

HSJ has seen documents suggesting her grievance was upheld, with the trust finding her removal from the ward had been “orchestrated by the consultants with no hard evidence”.

The findings added: “[The consultants] behaviours and comments, as witnessed by a number of senior managers and executive staff fall far short of what is expected by the trust and professional standards… Immediate steps need to be taken to address these behaviours, ideally through mediation… and with apologies from all of the named consultants who made unsubstantiated comments.”

The sources claimed the consultants were told there would be consequences if they refused to work with Letby, as it could leave them open to a GMC referral.

Revealed: How trust execs resisted concerns over Letby

Trust bosses questioned the integrity of doctors who first raised concerns about a nurse who has now been convicted of murdering seven babies, and said medics must apologise to her, HSJ has learned.

I completely agree that she is a heinous and evil being but to use the term psychotic is just disablist and wrong.
I work in mental health, there is no suggestion that Lucy is psychotic and all you are doing is furthering prejudice against those living with psychoses, who are not in the slightest dangerous.

They can’t extend her sentence for the other crimes but if she is e.g.given a whole life tariff they can suggest that other deaths are attributable to her.

So e.g. in the case of Harold Shipman he was only actually convicted of 15 murders, but an enquiry found that he was responsible for at least 218 deaths, and possibly as many as 240.

can anyone with experience in working in this type of setting explain how LL could have got hold of the insulin she injected without someone clocking that that medication was missing? I just don't understand it (not being a medic myself)

Insulin isn’t a controlled drug so she wouldn’t have needed to sign for it. Anyone can access it so long as they have access to the fridge keys.

They might have noticed a bottle missing but it wasn’t being monitored properly. I think someone on another thread said that when they did a stock check they noted that the unit had used more vials of insulin in that year compared to the year before. But it’s difficult to stock check properly as it’s so potent in small doses.
