Lucy Letby guilty

BarelyLiterate · 18/08/2023 13:12

Lucy Letby has been convicted of the murder of seven babies and the attempted murder of six more.

My thoughts are with the families of the victims.

I just read the timeline of her actions on

https://www.itv.com/news/granada/2023-08-18/timeline-of-events-in-the-conviction-of-killer-nurse-lucy-letby

It's really disgusting.

It's disgusting that she looked up the parents on Facebook after the deaths. Killers often enjoy parents suffering.

It's also disgusting that she attempted to murder the same baby several times, and left one baby very disabled.

She definitely enjoyed the power. She is evil.

AlfietheSchnauzer · 18/08/2023 18:39

Like many of us, I've sat and tried to 'invent' a 'motive' for such evil but the only thing I could possibly come up with, was some kind of jealousy? Particularly as she apparently did these heinous acts on specific notable dates, such as the original due date of babies who were born premature.... That seems like it's done for a reason; The only one I can come up with, being to inflict the worst pain possible on the parents on a date they'd spent 8+ months looking forward to?

Either way, pure evil. The more years that pass, the more I despise the world I've brought my child into

The reason is that she just enjoyed having the power of having life or death over people. She enjoyed it. Some dark evil people enjoy having that much power over others.

Ted Bundy said he enjoyed killing.

I feel sick and I feel like vomiting after reading a timeline of her actions. One of the worst cases I've ever read about.

Really evil

rileybelle · 18/08/2023 18:50

@AvocadotoastORahouse they did go further, they asked the Royal College of Child Physicians to investigate. The Trust did not properly act on the results of that enquiry.

You also have to remember that this group of clinicians were being threatened by GMC referral therefore were in fear of their own professional lives.

BlastedPimples · 18/08/2023 18:51

Christ almighty. That timeline makes horrific reading.

What a brutal, cruel, dark soul she has.

rileybelle · 18/08/2023 18:52

Sorry Royal college of paediatrics and child health. The trust then brought in their own external investigator who did not give a comprehensive or definitive report.

I did wonder this. I'm going to watch the Panorama programme at 8pm to see if there's any more about this.

It’s already uploaded to iPlayer, I am watching it now

How bloody rude!!

I hate threads like this, everyone outdoing themselves in righteous indignation, piling on the handful of people expressing allowed (if disliked, no one says you have to like or agree with them) opinions. Sneering, using ridiculous analogies and bad faith rhetoric to appear clever.

Actually covid (your bad faith example) is actually quite pertinent, as mumsnet became a raging echo chamber then. Difference of opinion to lockdown wasn't allowed. Those who disagreed were called dumb, SAVE THE NHS YOU FOOLS etc etc.

Now. The Jury have made their verdict. The verdict will stand. Nothing I, or anyone says will make any difference.

However, I am allowed by reason of it being a free country still, to say that (and bearing in mind there have been some high profile miscarriages of justice in other related cases) that I FELT THERE WAS A LOT OF CIRCUMSTANTIAL EVIDENCE IN THIS CASE.

Feel free to ignore me. I accept that people strongly disagree. Someone said several pages back that is not the place. I'll accept that. And anyone so offended by this comment or earlier ones can bloody well ask mumsnet to delete it. That's truly fine with me! I really will understand that.

I shan't be responding to anymore comments. Carry on with burning the witch.

People are so full of their own self importance on this site and apparently you aren’t allowed to have a different perspective. Gone seem to be the days of fair and reasoned arguments, while respecting someone else’s point of view. I can only assume it is lack of intellect that causes people to respond with such vitriol, rather than allow for opinions aside from their own. It’s quite easy to say you disagree with something without having to resort to character assassination.

FWIW I followed the podcast closely and like you, was also surprised at the lack of actual evidence. I’m not saying that she didn’t do it, but I really assumed there would be more evidence that she was seen injecting the air or insulin, even on just one occasion. But she was not once caught actually doing it.

mumofteenss · 18/08/2023 18:54

Ejismyf · 18/08/2023 17:30

My main confusion is I thought all hospital meds were counted and recorded what was being taken out and by who and you needed your badge to go in there to record who was in and when to tally it up, is this incorrect? Would that not of shown insulin going missing that wasnt recorded as being used?

Not ness. Insulin in most places i have worked is in a locked fridge, but the keys are handed around as needed, the doors have access codes on them but dont require card access. It is in glass vials and we draw up as many units as we need, this is the checked by a second nurse against a prescription and placed back in the fridge. But its not documented how much we have in the fridge at any given time. Controlled drugs are written in books, we write in what we took and what was placed back and it is again checked and witnessed by a second nurse. But insulin isnt a controlled drug, anyone can have the keys and quantities arent written down.

I however, work in adult wards and areas, this could be different in childrens care, and could vary between trusts.

AlfietheSchnauzer · 18/08/2023 18:55

@Mooshamoo Yep. Two previous cases which really affected me were one in Scotland on a little 6 year old girl stripped naked, brutally attacked & murdered in the woods. Also the Gabby Petito case in the US.
Reading about such evil has turned me into an extremely anxious mother.

BIossomtoes · 18/08/2023 18:55

But she was not once caught actually doing it.

Hw many murderers have ever been caught in the act? I can’t think of a single one.

Mooshamoo · 18/08/2023 18:55

BlastedPimples · 18/08/2023 18:51

Christ almighty. That timeline makes horrific reading.

What a brutal, cruel, dark soul she has.

It's awful isn't it.

I feel tarnished after reading it. I can feel the evil. It's just horrendous and disgusting.

One awful thing is where she attempted to murder some babies and they nearly died, but they were saved.

And then she attempted to murder them again.

Its awful to read :

Baby survives murder attempt number one,

Then it says Lucy goes back to try to kill him a second time.

Her doing Facebook searches on the parents hours later just seems so evil and cold. She was looking for their suffering.

I feel ill

PinkyFlamingo · 18/08/2023 18:56

DysonSpheres · 18/08/2023 13:30

Having followed the case on the threads I'm not confident in this judgement.

Well I'm sure tbe jury know more about it than you or anyone on MN.

DriftingDora · 18/08/2023 18:56

BIossomtoes · 18/08/2023 18:28

Now. I suspect his resignation will be shortly requested.

You would hope that the buck would stop at the top, but most of those who are at the top are adept at refusing to budge. I expect we'll hear "lessons will be learnt" anytime now...another meaningless load of old cobblers that gets trotted out regularly.

But circumstantial evidence is fine, I don’t understand your problem? Even finger prints & DNA are circumstantial. Direct evidence is only eyewitness testimony or a confession, everything else is circumstantial and the more circumstantial evidence there is (in this case A LOT) the easier it is to infer a connection.

DameCurlyBassey · 18/08/2023 18:59

FrogTaped · 18/08/2023 17:40

I know what you're saying, but her looking how she does definitely adds an additional element of shock.

She looks like the girl next door; young, pretty, smiley, and of course she's a nurse. It just adds a level of juxtaposition that's quite chilling.

Anyone who has worked in a high security women prison will tell you that the majority look like "any person on the planet" as @BeggyMitchell says. Perhaps we all watch too many films where the villain is often someone with strange looks. Or "foreign".

MenopauseSucks · 18/08/2023 18:59

Jeez.... Just read that Ian Harvey, the hospital's Medical Director when Letby was there, retired in 2018 to the south of France with a ÂŁ1.8 million pound pension...

Is it possible that all the managers that refused to act can be investigated & possibly prosecuted even if they're retired or have moved on?
Or will it be just the Trust be held responsible?

Mooshamoo · 18/08/2023 19:00

Reading that timeline of events I can't understand how she was left in the ward for so long.

It says she tried to kill several sets of twins , and a set of triplets.

the death of a baby is suspicious.

But surely the deaths and near deaths of a couple of sets of twins should have really raised alarm bells.

One twin dying ,then another twin dying is extremely uncommon.

Also why don't they have cameras in baby wards?

mummy203 · 18/08/2023 19:00

Ive no idea if she’s guilty or not, but I’ve been following the BBC podcast and with the evidence against her I didn’t think they could find her guilty without a doubt, I’m shocked.

Gilead · 18/08/2023 19:02

Couple of points. I advocate for my adult children. They are autistic and if they need/want support,I provide it.

Secondly, my twins were born at 33 weeks, (now in their twenties) they were in scbu for a fortnight, it was really scary. I cannot imagine how the parents of these victims feel. All you desperately want is to ensure they’re safe and get them home. The units work in that the closer to the nurses station, the more severe the case. We used to get really excited when they were moved further away.
I can see that it may have been all too easy for her.

reesewithoutaspoon · 18/08/2023 19:02

They dont have cameras in wards for privacy and dignity. patients may be in a state of undress, how do you secure the footage to ensure its not used for nefarious purposes?

Highdaysandholidays1 · 18/08/2023 19:02

Had the Trust acted properly, though, by installing cameras in a neo-natal unit where there were unexplained deaths and where a nurse had come under suspicion, there might well have been more than circumstantial evidence. Someone said most murders are not captured through direct filming or eyewitness testimony, but most people only commit one act, she was convicted of 13 murders or attempted murders and many others are suspected, so that level of tampering and rates of deaths should have been actively monitored. Parents are videoed where Munchausen by Proxy is suspected.

TotalOverhaul · 18/08/2023 19:03

SuperBurgers · 18/08/2023 13:19

The scary part is she looks so bloody normal, just a couple of years younger than me, someone I could go out for drinks with. She looks happy in her photos... just how does this happen? How can people be this twisted? What was she getting out of it?

I thought that. She looks so utterly normal.

Those poor families. There's no worse tragedy than this.

DriftingDora · 18/08/2023 19:04

enchantedsquirrelwood · 18/08/2023 17:26

Waste of money. The NHS won't change until it made to. The government needs to pass legislation. It could do something useful for once before the next election.

So many previous inquiries into so many other cases about so many different events. Another probable whitewash, methinks.

savory · 18/08/2023 19:05

The 110 hours of deliberations must have meant there was a lot to consider, but we have to accept the jury was the best informed. I just find it incredible that a woman and nurse could be so unbelievably evil. I don't even want to go unto the cesspits of such a mind.

beeonmybonnett · 18/08/2023 19:05

How on earth can someone refuse to appear in court?? You shouldn’t get a choice!
