Lucy Letby guilty

BarelyLiterate · 18/08/2023 13:12

Lucy Letby has been convicted of the murder of seven babies and the attempted murder of six more.

My thoughts are with the families of the victims.

It sounds like the hospital is atrocious, given your experiences & also reports such as ‘raw sewage’.
However, it seems like the trial took its time & considered thousands of reports / eye witness accounts / testimonials etc.

According to Wikipedia (!), there were 21 cases she was tried for:
Letby was found guilty of seven murders and six attempted murders. Letby was found not guilty of two attempted murders and the jury was unable to agree a verdict on the remaining six counts of attempted murder.

PrincessScarlett · 18/08/2023 18:07

In Dr Stephen Brearey's interview he says that after the death of the second triplet he spoke with duty executive Karen Lees and demanded that Letby be taken off the unit immediately. Lees refused. Brearey asked her if she would take responsibility if there were any more babies harmed and Lees said she would. The very next day Letby was on duty and another baby was harmed.

Senior management need to be held accountable for letting Letby go on killing and attempting to kill. It is an absolute disgrace that they refused to take action.

Prisoners who refuse to leave their cells to attend their sentencing hearings could be given longer jail terms as a result, under a proposal being considered by the Government.
Also totally agree for those who refuse to leave cells then their faces should be live streamed into court and the court sentencing live streamed back to them too.

But prisons don't have those resources in cells!

Clarabe1 · 18/08/2023 18:14

You would assume that a person going into the caring professions would be caring but what if the sole reason is so they can play God? Makes you wonder if there are others in the NHS.

It really is too much to comprehend - how could you? A little helpless baby? Just fucking evil.

BeenThereDoneThat101 · 18/08/2023 18:14

While I take the point about not being able to be dragged into the dock, this isn’t something which should be a choice.

You are detained. Therefore you’ll do as you’re told.

It certainly shouldn’t be the case that prisoners get to decide days in advance whether they’ll be attending the sentencing or not. It should be assumed that they’re going. if on the morning of sentencing they refuse to go then they should get an extra ten years on top of their sentence. In the case of someone like her who will get a whole life tariff they should be given a specific time in solitary confinement or equal punishment added to their sentence.

People are judged by appearance all the time and I don’t doubt for a second that it was harder to convince people of her guilt because she was a presentable, reasonably attractive young woman. What she did was so ugly and monstrous and she looks like that nice girl from over the road.

And sadly the corollary is true. Unattractive people, people of colour etc are less likely to be judged favourably, more likely to be perceived as capable of ugly crimes.

I hope she lives every day in fear of what other prisoners will do to her. That is still not enough for that evil bitch. Those poor babies.

Couldn't agree more. I hope her days are filled with terror, isolation and misery. She's a wicked, wicked individual

LoisWilkersonslastnerve · 18/08/2023 18:16

I've followed the trial, it's just awful. Those poor babies. The motive is unclear, the doctor mentioned didn't start at the unit until after some of the deaths so it wasn't necessarily about him. I suspect she has a cruel and sadistic streak and enjoyed the chaos and grief but that's just my own speculation. Thoughts go out to the families. 🌹

LightSpeeds · 18/08/2023 18:16

Absolutely disgusting (but not at all surprising) how the hospital management refused to deal with this.

They should also be in the dock!

BeenThereDoneThat101 · 18/08/2023 18:16

As for the people saying they’re not sure she’s guilty, ffs rein it in.

If you want to go and play bleeding heart to one of the most prolific serial child killers in history go and join one of those wacko conspiracy sites where people go to discuss writing letters to Levi Bellfield and the like.

CandyflossKaren · 18/08/2023 18:17

@BeenThereDoneThat101 solitary confinement is NO punishment, many prisoners enjoy that.

You can't force prisoners .... the monitoring board would have a field day.

Prisons don't have the ability to add much to sentences either!

TrundleWheel · 18/08/2023 18:18

I've just watched the video on the BBC site of her arrest.

She mentioned that she had just had knee surgery so couldn't get into the back seat of the car.

It just seemed so incredibly cold and self centred to focus on that at that particular moment. Was she expecting sympathy from the police officers?

mollyminniemo · 18/08/2023 18:19

Oh Rosscameasdoody really? So a friend of a friend didn't get tests for Covid... your Mum got sent home, supposedly in someone else clothes. Why didn't she have her own clothes? Its decent of them to find spare clothes to send her home in tbh and they probably needed her bed. bla bla bla bla. Do you know how unrelated and completely of no comparison the cases you quote (but can't actually go into details about!) are to this case? Just leave it.

mumda · 18/08/2023 18:19

If it is not the right verdict then there are more horrific problems to uncover.

RedSkiesandAllies · 18/08/2023 18:20

CandyflossKaren · 18/08/2023 18:09

My preferred method for dealing with this case wouldn't be allowed.

She aggressively rammed tubes down the throats of tiny defenceless preemies yet she was able to decide not to appear for the final verdict.

What I would do to her would get me banned.

The bitch needs to be faced with the exact same situation of helplessness those poor babies were in, and then dealt with in the manner she treated them. But slowly and prolonged. What an evil evil woman.

My heart breaks for those babies and their parents.

Michael Jackson was never convicted of a crime against children, it is unfair to lump him in with others that have been.

Neither was Jimmy Saville if you want to split hairs.

SleepingStandingUp · 18/08/2023 18:21

Maggiethecat · 18/08/2023 17:47

One of the consultants has said he thinks a number of those babies would have been at school now had it not been for her.

utterly heartbreaking

Just about to start year 4 for the older ones. I just selfishly look at my 8 yo who was in NICU at the same time as the earliest crimes identified, and how fragile he was. How much trust I put in the amazing nurses every time they sent me to bed at night or to get lunch. The docs were great but it was the nurses who kept him alive, and he didn't make it easy. Like the battle isn't hard enough. The thought of one of them deliberately.....

Those parents have been robbed of their proper first cuddles, gorgeous toddlers, gobby tweens, sulky teens, whole lifetimes stolen.

I hope she rots and I hope she dies in there.

BeenThereDoneThat101 · 18/08/2023 18:21

Prisons don't have the ability to add much to sentences either! judges do though.

There are already sentencing guidelines where a defendant e.g. confesses to the crime, so it’s not hard to add time where the defendant is refusing to face their punishment head on.

On some levels I think that a full life term is what she should face. But given that the taxpayer are going to have to pay to not only house her in prison but to protect her while she’s in there,it would be preferable if she followed Harold Shipman.

Maggiethecat · 18/08/2023 18:22

It’s on the news now - talking about the parents of twins, one who died and the other left disabled; 8 years on and they still have to live with the devastation she’s caused.

loveandpoprockz · 18/08/2023 18:24

It’s cases like this that make me want them to bring the death penalty back. She should never walk free again but I bet she does 😡

Chances are that every time a baby died in her care she got a lot of attention and sympathy and perhaps this was her motive.

I definitely think she thought she could get some sympathy off the police officers.

There is most likely some psychopathy/narcissism in her which is probably how she went uncovered for so long and I wonder if she thought the police would fall for it too.

All serial killers are very ‘normal’ and are very approachable and friendly and she used this to get away with her crimes for so long and probably thought she could use it on the police.

Fruitynutcase · 18/08/2023 18:25

She will get a whole life sentence. No way will she ever be let out and nor should she be . I feel sorry for the parents of those poor children and I feel sorry for her parents and any siblings who will bear the brunt of this .

LebabeseAgnosticJewess · 18/08/2023 18:25

As someone on the autism spectrum, I noticed something about her appearance, particularly her eyes, that made it uncomfortable for me to look at her. Although I tend to feel this aversion generally, there was something in her face and eyes that stood out to me and I would have to cover her face when reading articles about her, yet I refrained from mentioning it at that time due to not wanting anyone to be judged as it can be a slippery slope to judge people on appearances, or how you 'feel' about someone. I recall vaguely the murder of a woman in England and I believe a sock was taken as a souvenir and the newspapers went wild blaming a man who had a kind of crazy scientist hairstyle and the public ate it up because of how he looked. He was totally innocent poor guy and the man who killed her looked a lot more average and bland.

I find it a little intriguing that she had a mothers day card from her cats written by her mum.

CallistaFlockfart · 18/08/2023 18:25

Tony Chambers the then Chief Executive appears to be Chief Executive at another hospital in Sussex.

This is ridiculous. Not appearing at the sentencing is not a criminal offence, so no additional jail time is warranted. The same as misgendering isn’t a criminal offence, but there are those who would add to the sentences of women who misgender the transgender men with whom they are obliged to share prisons. Do you agree with that too ?
