Lucy Letby guilty

BarelyLiterate · 18/08/2023 13:12

Lucy Letby has been convicted of the murder of seven babies and the attempted murder of six more.

My thoughts are with the families of the victims.

There is an ugly classism in our society. People are posting that they're shocked Letby did this despite her "normal upbringing". No one here knows what went on behind the scenes while she was growing up, so "normal upbringing" is clearly code for "middle-class background".

^

Absolutely this. She was so normal, and let's face it, wholesome looking.

Appearances are deceptive, obviously.

Laiste · 18/08/2023 15:11

The looking normal thing: i think in our subconscious we hope that monsters look like monsters so that we can recognise them and avoid them.

Not wanting to believe she did it is understandable. Like above, we don't want to believe that someone who 'looks normal and has trained as a nurse' would kill someone in their care, because it removes our basic ways of putting faith in anybody!

Personally i don't find it hard to believe it's happened though.

A sick individual able to quietly and easily kill helpless non verbal patients is somehow easier for me to get my head around than the case after case of systematic torture, neglect and murder done by perfectly sane parents of their own children.

I agree that those who took part in trying to sweep this under the carpet after receiving warnings should be stood in the dock as well, asap.

MansfieldLark · 18/08/2023 15:11

Just said she won't be in court for sentencing.

ZoeCM · 18/08/2023 15:11

In fairness - Gary Glitter, Jimmy Savile and Michael Jackson didn't exactly do wonders for demonstrating that you can't tell if someone's a creep just by looking at them.

HOW COULD THIS BE

HYSTERIA

Maggiethecat · 18/08/2023 15:12

I feel for the parents and what they’ve gone through.

the mum of twins describes the awful baby’s screams she heard as she approached the neonatal unit to discover that it was her child, who eventually died, his twin falling ill shortly after. The surviving child now has severe deficits, having been given intravenous insulin.

how does that management team live with themselves?

HotWaxToTheMax · 18/08/2023 15:12

I find with these cases it is never the childrens /victims names that are known or remembered publicly.
Such a shame.

Cowlover89 · 18/08/2023 15:12

Those poor babies 😔 hope she rots!

Cherrysoup · 18/08/2023 15:14

The executives telling people to stop linking her to the deaths or there’d be ‘consequences’? For a long period of time? Consequences like….more dead babies? Unbelievable.

NHS senior management everywhere needs looked into .
I have personal experience of dreadful management

Agree. It’s also terrifying to be honest that no one acted sooner.

BeenThereDoneThat101 · 18/08/2023 15:15

To all of those questioning the verdict and even going so far as to argue with people on here, the day when a woman has been found guilty beyond reasonable doubt is not the time.

Firefighter22 · 18/08/2023 15:15

If you were a consultant in that horrific situation and had taken your concerns to management a few times and nothing was happening, why wouldn’t you report it to the police yourself rather than have babies in perpetual risk of harm and worse?

Badbadbunny · 18/08/2023 15:15

@Laiste

The looking normal thing: i think in our subconscious we hope that monsters look like monsters so that we can recognise them and avoid them.

Same with conmen. So many elderly people who've been conned because the person conning them was smartly dressed, well presented, etc. They seem incapable of understanding that anyone can buy a "smart suit" from a supermarket for very little money! My MIL is like that. If someone turns up who she thinks is "scruffy", i.e. T shirt and jeans, tattoos, etc., she'll not give them the time of day, but someone in a suit (male or female) gets invited in for a cup to tea. Time and time again, we tell her, but she just can't get over herself re her long held belief that "bad" people look scruffy/weird!

Flickersy · 18/08/2023 15:16

What an unimaginably sad case all around.

commentdeletedeplete · 18/08/2023 15:16

Good grief, I've just read thatone of her coworkers suspects her of hurting her premature baby! I guess it'll all come out now...

marblesthecat · 18/08/2023 15:16

I still just feel total disbelief at this. A huge part if me still thinks she couldn't have done it but the rational part of me knows there was a lot of evidence.

VictoriaVenkman · 18/08/2023 15:16

Just heard on the BBC she will not be at her sentencing on Monday

Porageeater · 18/08/2023 15:18

Is there not a legal duty for nhs to refer potential child protection concern, which this would surely have been? This should have been an automatic flag to the police. I hope there is a criminal investigation into this aspect of it and the actions of these managers.

EilonwyWithRedGoldHair · 18/08/2023 15:18

IncognitoMam · 18/08/2023 15:03

I hope she gets her just desserts in prison. No doubt she'll be protected 🤬

Well yes, violence in prisons shouldn't be encouraged, and as a general rule a violent crime is a violent crime regardless of the target.

It will be interesting to see whether she is sent to a prison or a secure hospital though. On the face of it the latter seems more likely - not sure why some people think this is a bad thing, if it's the most appropriate place for her that should be the only deciding factor.

Maggiethecat · 18/08/2023 15:18

Cherrysoup · 18/08/2023 15:14

The executives telling people to stop linking her to the deaths or there’d be ‘consequences’? For a long period of time? Consequences like….more dead babies? Unbelievable.

You would think the least that they would do after the first few deaths and the raised alarm would be to move her to office type work while investigating, which they did eventually but only after further deaths.

???

marmaladeandpeanutbutter · 18/08/2023 15:19

@Firefighter22 easy to say, but difficult to chuck your career in when that many managers disagree with you.Which you would be.

I think the management in this trust at several levels have behaved disgracefully.

Beachwaves127 · 18/08/2023 15:20

Does anyone know what that nicu is like in general? Below expectations or performing adequately? Was she a murderer in a bad hospital or a good hospital?

NeedMoreWonga · 18/08/2023 15:20

Whattodo112222 · 18/08/2023 13:38

She won't survive long in prison. I suspect someone will be willing to do extra time for her.

Absolutely no words.. those poor families.

The cunt will end up in Rampton with Beverly Allitt.

marmaladeandpeanutbutter · 18/08/2023 15:21

@Maggiethecat they moved her to the unit which would have been investigating her!

commentdeletedeplete · 18/08/2023 15:21

This from Sky News:

^But the court heard that colleagues had suspicions about Letby well over a year before hospital bosses contacted the police.

A nurse who worked at the hospital told Sky News that when "alarms would go off during the night" there would be a "phrase that people would use".

Lynsey Artell said that colleagues would ask, "I wonder if Lucy's working tonight?".
