BarelyLiterate · 18/08/2023 13:12

Lucy Letby has been convicted of the murder of seven babies and the attempted murder of six more.

My thoughts are with the families of the victims.

I just can't get my head around it. Shouldn't judge a book etc, but some murderers just aren't a surprise when you see pics of them, you kind of think 'well I'd steer clear of them'. But like others have said, she just looks so normal. You feel like you could trust your instincts about who is safe and who isn't, but this just goes to show it can be anyone!

There is a video that does the rounds on social media - guy with two photos asking who would you trust.
The photos are of a nice, tidy clean cut guy & a scruffy guy with a beard. 9 out of 10 trust the clean cut guy.
clean cut guy is a photo of Ted Bundy…

In fairness - Gary Glitter, Jimmy Savile and Michael Jackson didn't exactly do wonders for demonstrating that you can't tell if someone's a creep just by looking at them.

Michael Jackson was never convicted of a crime against children, it is unfair to lump him in with others that have been.

stripedknickers · 18/08/2023 15:23

I fear this is just the tip of the iceberg. They're now going to investigate all the neonatal admissions at the previous hospitals she worked at. God knows how many more there are. Has the potential to be a Harold Shipman situation.

Porageeater · 18/08/2023 15:24

The consultants should have whistle blown and they must be thinking that now. Easier said than done however. The doctor on the news was clearly distressed. Hopefully the inquiry will effectively examine this.

marmaladeandpeanutbutter · 18/08/2023 15:21

@Maggiethecat they moved her to the unit which would have been investigating her!

Shows that they still didn’t think she may have been responsible, only bowed to pressure.

either that or they were very stupid on top of everything.

userxx · 18/08/2023 15:26

How many times was she reported? That needs to be looked into and management need to give answers.

I'm a nurse and I'd like to say I can't believe hospital management failed to investigate but I can believe it, they should be prosecuted.

Same here. At the very least they should be sacked for not doing their job of protecting vulnerable patients.

Anothenamechange · 18/08/2023 15:29

Those poor, poor families. How unspeakably difficult this incredibly drawn out progress must have been.

But also credit due to the lawyers, judge and, most of all, jurors. This must have been a dreadful case to have to prosecute, with so much appalling detail to absorb. But also imagine being plucked from your regular life to hear about dead babies for almost a year, with the weight of someone's lifelong liberty at stake if you're wrong. It sounded like they took it as seriously as they could and should. I really hope they are offered some sort of trauma counselling.

LlynTegid · 18/08/2023 15:29

Those who ignored the doctor who reported concerns should face criminal proceedings.

Thoughts for the families of those babies who were killed.

Toddlerteaplease · 18/08/2023 15:32

There has been a lot of talk about the doctors concerns about her, but I wonder what her nurse colleagues thought about her.

TetrapanaxRex · 18/08/2023 15:32

I thought after Beverley Allitt there would be strict measure in hospitals to prevent it happening again but sadly it hasn't been the case.

Absolutely heartbreaking dow the parents/families of the victims.

Sometimes evil people look like and pretend to be angels when they are anything but.

Procrastinatingbecauseithelps · 18/08/2023 15:33

That evil, evil witch. I hope she gets what’s coming to her in prison.

It won’t compare to what the parents and medical staff have been through, but she deserves the greatest pain and punishment.

TetrapanaxRex · 18/08/2023 15:34

Blossomandbee · 18/08/2023 14:03

What possesses someone to go through all that training, to get into such a caring and trusted role, to then do what she's done. To the most vulnerable and defenceless victims there could be. Its incomprehensible.

Power? Being able to wield life or death?
Watching the suffering of the family and knowing that you caused it?

Absolutely horrendous whatever the reason.

It seems she wasn’t just reported but those who tried to raise concerns where treated like the bad guys and made to write letters of apology to her!

truthhurts23 · 18/08/2023 15:34

sqirrelfriends · 18/08/2023 13:35

Honestly this terrifies me, she just seems so normal and I would never expect something so twisted and evil from a person like her.

I really feel for those families right now, and also those who suspect she may have played a part in their child’s death, I hope they can find some closure soon.

is there a particular look or personality, that someone has to have, to be a baby killer?
everyone keeps saying she was so "normal" but actually she wasn't, there were many signs that she wasn't a "normal" person

mumofteenss · 18/08/2023 15:34

Ive read alot or articles and listened to the podcast and i think deciding anything other than guilty on most charges was obvious.

But, i also think there were systematic failures across the whole area, and some of these failures were placed onto LL in order to save hospital from further investigation into the management of the hospital itself.

LL is evil, she murdered, and attempted to murder all these babies. Its undeniable with even the small amount of evidence we were privy to throughout the trial. But the hospital and management failed to act, failed to safeguard, failed to investigate and undoubtedly facilitated LL to be able to commit these crimes.

PriamFarrl · 18/08/2023 15:36

I think the reason that people are saying that she looks normal is that she has a social media presence and therefore a lot of photos.

If I say Myra Hinley or Rose West then you think of one of a few photos. Certainly with Myra Hindley you will most likely think of that one infamous one. Until recently, most people only had a few pictures of themselves or their family and the ones that the press managed to get hold of were the ones printed again and again.

With Lucy Letby there have been hundreds of photo available for the press to pick from. She has loads of happy pictures and looks like us or our daughters. We see ourselves or our friends and family in her in a way we don’t in those one or two pictures of past killers.

TetrapanaxRex · 18/08/2023 15:36

This is what Beverley Allitt was diagnosed with -

I’ve not really seen any complelling evidence

really hope the court had some

tragic all round

Insulin that hadn't been prescribed for the baby ending up in the feed? Sounds very suspicious to me. There are protocols for administering medication ,

purplepencil90 · 18/08/2023 15:38

@TetrapanaxRex I read an article earlier this year from the US I think about medical professionals who kill patients either on purpose, through incompetence of some kind of hubris and the article was essentially saying that it isn't unusual for a hospital to just hush it up and try to quietly move the offender on to a different hospital and let them deal with it.

All bit institutions are the same people single out say the Catholic Church but we see the same cowardly self preservation is most big institutions such as the BBC, Charities, and as we see here Hospitals.

Wish I could find the article.

CantGetABreak · 18/08/2023 15:39

Mumuser124 · 18/08/2023 13:42

@DysonSpheres

Did you actually follow the court case? There is absolutely no doubt she is guilty.

One of the deaths was caused by injecting insulin into a feed, nobody on the ward was having insulin at the time. She admitted this must have been done intentionally but it wasn’t her?! So had to be one of two other nurses. She was the only nurse present at EVERY single one of the misterious and unexplainable deaths.

I followed the case live and I am a nurse so it may be clearer for me to see but there is absolutely no way she is not guilty. I strongly suspect she has Munchausen's by proxy because she seems to be able to separate what she has done with murder. I think she genuinely just wanted to be apart of a high adrenalin situation, gaining as much sympathy for her as possible (attention) and killing those poor babies was a means of gaining that. I don’t think she ‘feels’ she murdered them.

This is exactly what I was trying to articulate but failed re the Munchausen's, thank you

Smineusername · 18/08/2023 15:39

I think she's innocent and has been set up to cover up institutional failings tbh. Will be interested to see what the inquiry throws up

Simonjt · 18/08/2023 15:41

Boudicasbeard · 18/08/2023 15:05

Unbelievable that the ‘she’s not guilty’ conspiracy theorist’s couldn’t give it a day.

I suspect now that reporting restrictions have been lifted and a better view of the evidence is available that it will be clear why the verdicts that came in as guiltily came to be.

Just wanting someone not to be guilty doesn’t make it true. She has had full due process.

If they are so confident she is innocent, then surely they would happily place their own infant children or grandchildren with her while she has access to various medication.
