U.K. birthrate hits 20 year low

“Since 2011, the number of babies born has been on an almost constant downward trend, falling each year from 2011 to 2020 before a small rise in 2021 as pandemic restrictions were eased. The latest figures show another “considerable” decline last year, from 624,828 births to 605,479.”

This take the TFR to the lowest rate on record for the U.K. - 1.5

I wonder how much the birth rate will drop before it levels out.

The cost of housing and childcare are a major factor among my peers.

I currently have one in nursery and if I had two it would be ~ £4,000 pcm. That’s a £75,000 salary. To make a decision to do that is… complex.

I'm extremely glad it is dropping. We're totally overcrowded in Britain and the planet cannot sustain so many people. It's being ravaged as it is.

The Tories and Labour will always keep importing millions more. At least until everything collapses.

Amazingly ilinformed post. Watch birth gap, look at Japan. If you want health and social care in your old age you should be celebrating this.

This is how I feel too.

Maybe our politicians instead of banging on about endless 'growth' should approach things better/differently - it is unsustainable to keep having children just to care for those in their old age.

Not ill informed in the least. If we have no actual healthy planet to live on, or exhausted resources, health and social care is irrelevant.

Record low birthdate, also record high net immigration last year too. Immigration number higher than number of births

Have you watched it ? We have been below replacemnt level for 30 years. Just who do you think will be paying for the pensions of those currently in their 30's ?
