Do you like the smell of the butchers

I’ve always loved it. Not even just the cooked side. I also love the smell of the raw side.

Don’t know why. I don’t stick my nose into a pile of meat at home yet I can’t help but give a good sniff as I walk by the local butchers

No, hate it. But oddly, I love the smell of the fishmongers.

CultureAlienationBoredomandDespair · 16/08/2023 09:22

Yes, but I used to like it better when it had the sawdust smell
from the floor too.

Soubriquet · 16/08/2023 09:23

Now that I can’t stand

We don’t have a dedicated fishmonger here but we do have a van on a Tuesday and Saturday. I hold my breath everytime we walk by

I really hate the smell of raw meat, but really loves the taste of cooked meat

VinEtFromage · 16/08/2023 09:27

No 🤮

TwigTheWonderKid · 16/08/2023 09:51

Raw mer and bleach? No thanks.

MissMarplesGoddaughter · 16/08/2023 09:53

No, I hate that dried blood smell.....

GigiAnnna · 16/08/2023 09:57

No I think it's disgusting but I eat meat.

Iam4eels · 16/08/2023 10:07

No but I used to work in a butchers so I know what's under the counter. There are drainage holes in the metal unit, the meat and those strips of little plastic leaves hide them, the holes drain the juices from the meats into buckets under the counter. We used to put an inch or two of bleach in the bottom of each bucket to cover the worst of the smell but the underneath of those fridges is hot because of the motors keeping the upper storage part cold and by the end of a ten hour day those buckets stink and they have to be emptied and cleaned ready for the next day. Worst shift of my life was when I slipped and spilled one all down myself swiftly followed by me vomiting down myself.

Definitely don't like the smell

Didntmeanto6 · 16/08/2023 10:12

It's one of the smells that really really disgusts me. When I go in I breathe through my mouth. It's horrible. I actually prefer the smell of dirty public toilets to the smell of the butcher shop.

Petrol stations on the other hand 😍 yuuuuymmmmmm

Topseyt123 · 16/08/2023 10:18

No. Horrendous. Really, it's dried blood and dead animal. I used to eat meat, but no longer do. Haven't for years. Can't believe now that I ever liked it.

The shop that used to be a butcher's in our village is now a good local bakery which does a brisk trade. I love that. 😃

Pinkdelight3 · 16/08/2023 10:30

Yeah I like that smell and fishmongers too. Can't stand stinky cheese shops though, so I think I must be quite primal and unsophisticated!

BeverleyMacker · 16/08/2023 10:36

Do they still put sawdust down on the floors? Don't think I've set foot in a butcher since the 80s 🤢

stbrandonsboat · 16/08/2023 10:38

No, it's awful. I remember my first time in operating theatre as a student nurse and the smell when they started operating was exactly the same smell as in a butchers shop. I've never forgotten that. I expect they have better air conditioning systems now.

Untrained · 16/08/2023 10:42

Ohhhhhh Noooo! I work in an office above some local shops and sometimes the butcher below us would come into the office to get stuff photocopied. He STANK of raw meat/blood/animal and would stand there in his bloodstained apron. Oh gods, horrific memories - Id try to not breathe at all(!) or mouth-breathe or hide behind my computer and breathe through my cardigan!

WandaWonder · 16/08/2023 10:43

Yes I have since I was little it seems to have a nice old fashioned smell to me

Haven't been in a butcher's for years.
I remember, from over sixty years ago, the smell of the local butcher's shop, where dead animals hung on racks just behind were customers queued, and blood dripped onto the floor, soaked up (a little) by straw thrown down for the purpose. The butcher, his blood-stained apron and hands.
I didn't like the smell, but it was different from any other smells I knew at the time.
