Surely the school rebuilding plan signed off by R/S, whether or not he was advised of the state of schools, can be fact checked.

How long before Suella describes him as a leftie civil servant?

Jason118 · 04/09/2023 13:33

The schools debacle is another opportunity for business. Every child and teacher will be issued with a hard hat, safety shoes and safety glasses. Tory doners form a queue on the right in the VIP supply lane. Trebles all round.

mibbelucieachwell · 04/09/2023 13:40

Yes indeed. And an opportunity for the current government to make things even more difficult for the next government by signing off a needlessly expensive and inefficient rebuilding programme which the next government will be stuck with.

Back to GW. It boggles me that anyone would want to sit through the queen's, televised funeral and then be so angry that they send sweaty abusive messages to a colleague. How hard can it be to not send an abusive message?

the80sweregreat · 04/09/2023 13:43

ITV had an interview with the Education Secretary and at the end she swore ( she obviously didn't think that bit would be broadcast , especially at 1.40 pm on a Monday afternoon!)

Cornettoninja · 04/09/2023 13:49

What did she say @the80sweregreat?

(asking the important questions Grin)

Blimey - this is quite something

Education secretary Gillian Keegan is recorded saying others ‘have been sat on their as’ on schools Raac crisis and that it’s frustrating not being thanked for doing ‘a fing good job’

Just heard it replayed in Shelagh Fogarty. What a dunce.

funnily enough no one feels inclined to pat them on the back when we’re all sending kids off to schools of unknown stability and using hospitals that could also fall down at any point.

I would like her to flesh out the ‘everyone else is sitting in their arse’ comment though.

jgw1 · 04/09/2023 14:22

Cornettoninja · 04/09/2023 13:18

@jgw1 its because he follows formulas for success. He doesn’t have an original thought in his head that would have got him where he is today otherwise.

It’s also why he’s not the hero he wants to be given the current state of the country. It’s never been covered in a text book. If I’m being kind, a large part of that is because liz and kwazi went so far off piste he hasn’t got a clue what to do now. No initiative.

He does look as though when he meets something unexpected the cogs whirr and all that is outputted is "unexpected input please reboot".

DuncinToffee · 04/09/2023 14:47

Schools were not included in his 5 pledges, so he malfunctions

Does that take us up to 4 Tory scandals today?

Notonthestairs · 04/09/2023 15:54

"I would like her to flesh out the ‘everyone else is sitting in their arse’ comment though."

Yes I am quite keen to know who Keegan thought had been sitting on their arses.

Well it will either be the fault of the teachers or Labour. Or both.

Jason118 · 04/09/2023 16:06

Surely it'll be the civil service's fault?

itsgettingweird · 04/09/2023 16:20

Cornettoninja · 04/09/2023 09:23

As demonstrated by the fact the one that failed over the summer had been cleared as safe

aha. That’s the first time I’ve read that. I was wondering what forced their hand.

not just the knowledge that this stuff is an issue but the fact that something ‘cleared as safe’ still failed and as you point out (@MrTiddlesTheCat Smile) it’s nigh on impossible to sign off any of these buildings as safe unless they were built in the last couple of years.

Yes that's what I was saying the other day.

Ignoring the fact they've known about the issues and cut budgets.

In this case they had 52 schools deemed at risk which they've been sorting this year. 104 deemed needing repair but not at risk. One of those collapsed in the summer. Structural engineers are still classing these buildings as lower risk but they've said they can't risk it because if they collapse when occupied.

Hence the last minute job.

There's no doubt this could have been prevented as an overall disaster as with regards them acting at end of summer it's been a good thing on new evidence.

DuncinToffee · 04/09/2023 16:24

The anti growth coalition? Think that covers all the ones mentioned above as well Grin

I am pretty sure she means But Jeremy Corbyn, he is well know for his arse.

Cornettoninja · 04/09/2023 16:29

quoting myself because it’s since occurred to me this is usually the pained war cry of someone indignant they’ve been made to do their job properly/at all.

poor lady. Who knew being a minister was such hard work? It’s not like she could’ve avoided putting herself in this position.

We move on to Court buildings

The government has ordered urgent tests on courts built in the 1990s after dangerous concrete was found at a site in north London.

Govt said earlier this year all courts were safe - turns out it only surveyed those built from 60s to 80s

Ah, but you see RAAC has a lifespan of 30 years, so really they only need to inspect those buildings built before 1993, which was mostly in the 1980s anyway.

This is why Rishi is right when he says that maths in this country needs to improve.
Also 50 is more than 50.

itsgettingweird · 04/09/2023 17:41

They need to act on all buildings.

The collapse of 3 buildings this summer - 1 school and 2 others - which were deemed low risk shows that low means nothing!

They need to assess quickly and just sort any building with RAAC and make sure any future buildings and replacements use material that lasts longer then a few decades.

The school built in Victorian times are standing firmer!

Was it the quality of Victorian school buildings that Sunak was thinking of when he was pleased to announce each school will be rebuilt every 300 years?

RafaistheKingofClay · 04/09/2023 19:07

I think the others Keegan was referring to is LAs and MATs. Apparently they were told about the issue and it’s not the responsibility of the DfE to ensure schools are safe.

With what budget schools were supposed to do this with and exactly what the responsibility of the DfE is are so far unanswered.

Rishi looks odd because he can’t figure out how to segue into stop the boats from this.

Have I understood correctly if banks or Indian mulitnational companies need some money then it is fine for the government to step in and subsidse them, but if schools need preventing from falling down, its nothing to do with the government.

RafaistheKingofClay · 04/09/2023 19:18

I think that’s how it works.
