EXCLUSIVE: Internal NHS reports reveal hospital buildings are at imminent risk of "catastrophic" collapse, with significant loss of life, as a result of crumbling concrete:

Not sure killing the patients once they are in hospital is the most effective way of cutting waiting lists. 0/10 for this effort.

Nothing says we’re taking this seriously like a dance track backing?

Where are the Ed Sec, Health Sec and Gove? At least one of them needs grilling about why they’ve left this so long.

RAAC in education settings: Your concerns answered by Education Secretary Gillian Keegan

RAAC is I suppose a good example of why Keir Starmer and Labour are reluctant to make big policy announcements that will involve spending. As much as I wish they were being bolder.

RAAC is going to cost the taxpayer billions, Money we have been told repeatedly does not exist so public sector workers cannot have a pay rise.

How many more of these holes in the current government's budget will appear over the next year and in subsequent years as we discover just how useless they have been.

I don't envy Keir when he becomes Prime Minister next year it is not going to be easy.

I think the backing track is to discourage TV/radio clipping the video for the news.
Otherwise I'm stumped as to why the thought it was appropriate.

Is the reply to "at least the Tories know what a woman is", Shame they didn't kow what RAAC is?

Notonthestairs · 03/09/2023 16:05

I agree jgw. We've had over a decade of avoiding capital investment. You can't leave estates that long without storing up significant trouble. They will leave a bloody mess that will take well beyond a single term to sort out - and require a thriving economy to pay for it.

Conservatives have a big away day next week specifically for election planning. Increasingly I think that they will opt for an early summer next year - less visible NHS stories re A&E/ambulances waiting outside, before the boats get going (thus revealing the failure of the Rwanda plan) and whilst heating bills are lower.

I've got nothing really to base an early election on though - just hope!

Any chance they could have any days when they concentrated on governing the country in the interests of the majority?

Notonthestairs · 03/09/2023 16:14

Afraid Sunak didn't include that in his pledges.

I think their biggest problem is going to be they knew exactly what RAAC was.

Not that this should be a surprise given that this is the party that killed thousands through austerity 1, then thousands more due to covid mismanagement and God knows how many austerity 2 is taking out or the mismanagement of the NHS. Not to mention the party that didn’t want to feed hungry children during lockdowns, herded refugees together in Manston causing a diphtheria outbreak, was willing to overcrowd a barge without ensuring safety checks were done and I’m fairly certain would prefer the RNLI to just leave asylum seekers to drown in the English Channel. Children dying because their classroom ceiling fell down on them wouldn’t bother them at all.

Lol. No.

BIossomtoes · 03/09/2023 16:33

They’ve known about RAAC for well over a decade. I used to work in one of the hospitals with it. There are eight of them with identical templates, all built in the 80s, that were thrown up in no time flat with a projected lifespan of around 30 years. The one I worked in was falling down when I left in 2006. We had a ministerial visit and the ceiling on the route he was supposed to take fell down minutes before he arrived. We had to take him a different way to the department he was visiting. There’s no excuse for this other than sheer incompetence by both parties.

countrygirl99 · 03/09/2023 16:44

I remember thinking "oh shit" at a report about Hinchingbrooke Hospital as my dad was in there at the time and that was quite a bit pre-covid.

It was Hinchingbrooke where the ceiling collapsed. That was in the early 2000s.

Rishi Sunak rules out quick-fix trade deal with India | Rishi Sunak | The Guardian

Brexit Britain to 'cement global trading role' away from 'declining' EU with India deal | Politics | News | Express.co.uk

"Britain will "further cement" its "global trading role" with a free trade deal with India, a leading Brexiteer has said."

But now:

Rishi Sunak has ruled out a quick-fix trade deal with India, making it impossible to get an agreement over the line in time for this week’s G20 summit in Delhi – and possibly even by next year’s elections.
Multiple sources close to the negotiations have told the Guardian the prime minister has rejected the idea of an “early harvest” deal, which could have lowered tariffs on goods such as whisky but would not have dealt with trickier subjects such as professional services.

The decision has scuppered any chance of an agreement being struck this week, before the prime minister meets his Indian counterpart, Narendra Modi, in the Indian capital this weekend.
Many now believe a deal is impossible before both countries hold elections in 2024, although some in government still believe it could be reached later this year.

Don’t be silly, we’re talking NHS managers here. We worked out an alternative route at the speed of light. 😂

What a lost opportunity.

I don't understand why there isn't more discussion that these buildings were built with a projected lifespan of 30 years.
So presumably once those 30 years were up the government had a plan to replace them?

cakeorwine · 03/09/2023 17:03

You would have thought someone somewhere would have known there was a potential future problem.

Just like the Millennium Bug.

BIossomtoes · 03/09/2023 17:07

It’s the same deal as knowing the boomers were all reaching pension age at the same time, isn’t it? Sixty years’ notice to plan but they just kicked the can down the road. Every government just thinks as far ahead as getting re-elected.

Could some of the £350million a week from the EU be spend on rebuilding schools, or does it all have to be spent on the NHS?

This is because of the visas I bet
I always thought it would be interesting to see what happened when we had to start increasing visas to brown and black people, to fill the gaps left by the freedom of movement ending the ability for European to take those jobs

jgw1 · 03/09/2023 17:46

Its a bit confusing because several universities will be insolvent if they don't significantly increase the number of overseas students they take next year.
