Do you still trust the police?

Soubriquet · 12/08/2023 18:38

When I got with my dh 11 years ago, he would laugh when I said I trusted the police. That they were someone in a position of power, who I felt I could trust. He never tried to sway me, just said, ok..you’ll see.

Now…I don’t. After everything they has happened over the last few years..Rotherham, Wayne Couzens, the girl with autism and other shit like that, I do not trust them at all.

Is it like NAMALT but enough are to make you wary, but with the police? NAPALT but enough are to keep you on your guard?

Agreed it is hard if you have had a traumatic experience and or a vulnerable person. But for every bad incident there are tens of thousands of posible ones

You will be ok. If you are struggling with upset because of a tramaría event your well within your rights to report it/complain and seek counselling or support that you are entitled too

Yes on the whole I do. I think they're just people at the end of the day and like in any line of work there are always bad eggs.

See, I was followed by a plain back car along a deserted countryside "A" road a few years back. It had blue lights but was otherwise unmarked.
I was terrified and just kept driving and it backed right off.
Later that evening the Police came to my house and said it was a genuine police car and my car was a close match to a driver they wanted. They did say that they understood why I hadn't stopped.
It's so scary though.

This happened to me too, around Christmas time on an empty motorway.
Looking randomly for drink drivers, no breathalyser though just a discussion.
I was clearly visibly intimidated and the officer did nothing to soften his approach to pu me at ease.

I have absolutely no idea what you are on about Confused I don't need counselling or support.

I'm married to a copper and know many as a result. As individuals, they're wonderful: selfless; caring; hardworking. They've been let down by the higher powers consistently so that their working conditions are appalling, morale is low and they can't do the job they signed up for.

But those individual officers would also honestly admit that there is institution wide challenge, including racism, misogyny and so on.

If policing were funded properly, people were offered training, flexibility and ongoing support for health and wellbeing, if top down change happened and people were valued consistently and appointed appropriately, it'd all be very different. But it's a shambles and the very core of what can make a society malignant will always thrive in such an environment.

MotherEarthisaTerf · 12/08/2023 21:15

No i don't.

I'm very law abiding but they've fucked it.

True and they will never completely flush out bad eggs . They are in every workplace .

Thanks. I was a child when it happened and I'm not sure who I would complain to?

quietnightmare · 12/08/2023 21:17

@Underthelightofthefullmoon

Ok😉

Im not sure either. If you called 101 or go to line they should be able to help

Octosaurus · 12/08/2023 21:19

I don't trust anyone tbh. Police, doctors. It's not that I think they're all malicious but I think everything has become so bureaucratic that the caring side of these roles has completely fallen down in favour of box ticking and avoiding being sued/ fired/ slagged off.

Thanks. I don't think I'm ready yet to go near them. Cheers anyway. They were decent not to have charged me for wasting police time, because of my age. Had I been an adult I could have ended up like Ellie Willliams from Barrow.

BitOutOfPractice · 12/08/2023 21:24

Hmm I’m lucky enough not to have many dealings with them. But the dealings I have had have not impressed me.

as a woman, do I think they are going to protect me and other women? No I don’t.

so overall no, I don’t no.

TastesLikeStrawberriesOnASummerEvening · 12/08/2023 21:29

No, I don't, a couple of experiences where they've been less than great and I was on my own, at night, and then v recently Women Won't Wheesht in Aberdeen and their handling of that.
I attend those events and thought they'd do something if an assault occurred, but it's been handled horribly.
