Do you still trust the police?

When I got with my dh 11 years ago, he would laugh when I said I trusted the police. That they were someone in a position of power, who I felt I could trust. He never tried to sway me, just said, ok..you’ll see.

Now…I don’t. After everything they has happened over the last few years..Rotherham, Wayne Couzens, the girl with autism and other shit like that, I do not trust them at all.

I cant do a link from this phone but rapist PC Adam Provan's timeline of offending is in today's Guardian. First reported to his superiors for sexual assault in 2003. Kept in the force for a further 13 years with a catalogue of accruing sexual offences against fellow officers and members of the public. Those bad apples just keep on turning up don't they? Take a deep breath before reading, it will make you furious.

Genuine question. For people who don't trust the police who would you call if you needed help . If you got mugged, burgled. Violently attacked. Etc.

My friend asked me this when i said i have little or no faith in the police to protect me from harm if i urgently needed it. She was shocked that I genuinely think if my house was being burgled or I called while being chased by a man at night, they wouldn’t respond urgently. I think they’d rather deal with the aftermath of a burglary/assault rather than move to actively stop it. cynical of me I know and thankfully I’ve had no experience of either, but from Ive seen in the community around me. with the exception of armed units/swat teams etc, I think the ‘normal’ force officers will only protect you if the risk to themselves is low/nil. Which may be the correct response but I think there is a romanticised view of the police that they are our protectors or will ‘save us’ when this isn’t true a lot of the time.

sorry old thread 🙈

@TheNinny

What you have said makes sense . An ex copper told me that a lot of cops will trivialise things and brush it under the carpet than do anything about it . They seem to favour conflict resolution as it's cheaper than going to court .
