Sudden death in young adults

Baconsandwich33 · 10/08/2023 11:33

In the past 3 months I've suddenly lost 2 colleagues, one was 29 and the other approx 35.
The 29 year old lady died of a brain aneurysm and the cause of death for my male colleague is unknown as of yet, but it was sudden and unexpected.
Whilst this is rare, it's very frightening. I had only worked with them both in the days prior. Both left young children behind, seemingly healthy adults who just suddenly died.
This could be anyone really.
Has anyone else experienced this? It's heartbreaking for them and it does make me anxious.

My dad was about 15 (so a long time ago) and was watching a school football match

For some reason,a young lad of the same age ran across the pitch to get to the ball and just dropped down-he was dead before he hit the floor

I worked with a young lad a few years ago

He would be due to start at 4pm,he'd walk in at 4,but wouldn't come down until 4:20-you could set your watch by him

One day he just didn't show up which was very unusual-if he qas down for a shift he'd always show up-just 20 minutes late

Worried, our manager went to his home and was let in by his flatmate

She found him dead in his bed-i don't know the cause-i don't think anyone did

He was the same age as my dd which really hit me hard

A 4 year old I knew (4th child of 5) had been put in a bedroom with his 5 year old brother

The 5 year old had found a fuse in their room one night, and put it in his brothers mouth while he was asleep (they think it had been dropped at some point and somehow ended up in the kids room)

4 year old choked to death-found by dad the following morning

Such a waste of life

None of us know when we're going to go.

My daughter Maude died of SUDC - sudden unexplained death in childhood. Sudden death is rare, but it does happen- statistics vary but are roughly 2.7 per 100,000 deaths in persons aged under 40, discounting SIDS (under 1 year)

I, and I'm sure many other 'oldies', remember you losing Maude @ggglimpopo . I hope life has treated you more kindly in the years since Maude died. Flowers

Even doctors are 'baffled' (apparently).

My seemingly healthy 39 year old cousin collapsed and died a couple of weeks ago. Still can't get my head around it. Luckily her 7 year old was with his dad that day. Life can be very cruel

My friends fiancé dropped dead playing cricket in his late 20s - something heart related. Nobody knows what tomorrow will bring.

PriamFarrl · 10/08/2023 13:17

My DH ended up in A&E just before Christmas with a heart problem that most likely would have killed him without warning had his watch not spotted it. He’d been feeling run down but nothing to bother a doctor with. His watch said that he had AF and needed to do to the hospital now, which he did. They didn’t take it too seriously until they ran an ECG and then it was straight into resus and wired up to all sorts of machines.

GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER · 10/08/2023 13:18

I know of 2 male early 20s who died without any warning, of an undiagnosed and previously symptomless heart condition. One collapsed after some strenuous sport, the other was found dead in bed, having evidently died in his sleep. So utterly tragic.

A (female) friend of ours had a brain aneurism when she was in her twenties. She was very lucky to be out in the middle of London at the time, so she was whisked straight into a great hospital and made a full recovery. However if she'd been alone at home, or further away from a hospital, she'd have certainly died.

My DH had a cardiac arrest at 42. Taught me that it can happen to anyone and tomorrow is promised to nobody.

My step dad had his first heart attack at 30 followed by another 3 before he was 40. Thankfully he’s been fine from them. On of dp’s mates had a heart attack 2 years ago was only 21 and was touch and go for a while but has recovered now. Turns out he has something wrong with his heart that never got picked up on.

That's amazing. A friend of mine had low oxygen levels flagged due to their Apple Watch when they had what they thought was just a cold, but was actually pneumonia or something like that, I can't remember the exact details. It's interesting to think how personal health technology might evolve and what else gadgets might be able to catch in the future. Thank goodness for your husband wearing his watch! I have one too and it blows my mind that if I am in a car crash, it will automatically dial emergency services!

There's an increase in sudden deaths following the Pfizer covid vaccine.

I worked in a&e and saw lots of this. A friend when we were both 17 died in her sleep. Another school friend cardiac arrested in his early 20s but his gf gave CPR and he survived.

Elieenmorrigan · 10/08/2023 13:39

Two of my female bosses collapsed and died (several years apart) and the cause each time was a brain haemorrhage. They were each in their 30's.

It seems to be more common among women.

spottywren · 10/08/2023 13:43

My husband collapsed when he was 17 and it turned out to be an undiagnosed heart condition. He spent months in hospital after heart surgery.
He then collapsed more recently aged 31 and it turned out to be a tumor in his brain slowing the flow of CSF.
All fine now after brain surgery.

We are unable to get life insurance now for him which is a bit of a worry!

Do you have a credible source for this scaremongering fact?

TwilightSkies · 10/08/2023 13:45

repeat covid infections cause heart issues

Not necessarily SUDS as there is causality

girljulian · 10/08/2023 13:49

A friend of mine died aged 32, leaving two children under five. His wife took the kids out for a walk, came back with them and he was dead on the floor. Post mortem was "inconclusive" i.e. they couldn't find any reason.

Cardiac risk in the young run free screening sessions all over the country for anyone between 14 and 35 - no need for a referral. Follow them on social media to be informed of upcoming screening sessions.

Took my daughter to one, they take a history, do an echo which is then interpreted and you have a short chat with a cardiologist. They perform or refer for additional testing if needed.

They're an excellent organisation.

Pinkflamingopants · 10/08/2023 13:56

Myocarditis and strokes and high excess death rates - wonder why? Hmm

Trinity65 · 10/08/2023 13:58

Yes

I knew somebody a bit (was a friend of a friend) who was in his early 40s I think.

Sat in an armchair watching TV with his Mum, she got up and asked if he wanted a cuppa, he said No so she went to make herself a cup of Tea
By the time she went back into the living room her son was dead.. 😟

SemperIdem · 10/08/2023 14:02

A woman I know recently passed away at 34, cause unknown at the point of death. That was quite shocking to me.
