Sudden death in young adults

Baconsandwich33 · 10/08/2023 11:33

In the past 3 months I've suddenly lost 2 colleagues, one was 29 and the other approx 35.
The 29 year old lady died of a brain aneurysm and the cause of death for my male colleague is unknown as of yet, but it was sudden and unexpected.
Whilst this is rare, it's very frightening. I had only worked with them both in the days prior. Both left young children behind, seemingly healthy adults who just suddenly died.
This could be anyone really.
Has anyone else experienced this? It's heartbreaking for them and it does make me anxious.

It is very scary. An older colleague of mine lost his son at 18 to sudden adult death syndrome, just went into his room in the morning to find him dead. It's a hard thing to accept that people can just die without anything really 'happening' at all.

Baconsandwich33 · 10/08/2023 11:38

I'm really sorry to hear that, only 18 :(
It is scary and hard to accept.

Yes, a mate (man) was 21 when he dropped dead once he got home after footy training. Thankfully or not, he had a flatmate who was there so there was no not finding him for however long etc.

Also know of another about the same age dropped dead on his surfboard. A bloke a few years ahead of me at school died beside his wife in their bed. He was in his forties. Another one in town died beside his wife but he was a known asthmatic.

Russell Woolf of ABC Perth was 57, again died in bed beside his wife.

You know, I can’t think of a woman who has just dropped dead without a reason. The only ones I have read of are all postpartum, sick or just old.

Yes, a friend who was fit, healthy and active dropped dead suddenly in his early 30s. No warning, he was at a sporting event warming up when it happened. There were medics on site so he had prompt medical treatment but was dead when he hit the floor. It was believed to be basically the adult equivalent of cot death, absolutely tragic.

Then approximately 10 years later a friend lost her DH aged 30, to a heart condition. He'd collapsed and been resuscitated and discharged from hospital then collapsed again and they couldn't save him.

Both appalling and shocking.

Get life insurance and ensure your friends and family do too.

I had a friend in his 30s whose housemate came home one evening to find him dead in his chair in front of the telly. Some sort of cardiac event, no warning - it was awful.

Sorry, I accidentally posted a link to another thread. I've reported it

Rab Wardell, Katie Archibald's husband, both Olympic cyclists, died in his sleep aged 37. Super fit. Awful, tragic, she just woke up and he was dead. She did an amazing interview with Chris Hoy the other day, we, and Clare Balding were all in tears. She is amazing.

Seems to happen to a lot of fit young sporting men, something to do with strain in the heart, or undiagnosed heart issues. Odd, as you would assume they all have lots of medical check ups whilst training and competing.

TooBigForMyBoots · 10/08/2023 12:04

Yes, when I was younger one of my friends died from a brain aneurism. We'd all gone out and he disappeared off. We thought he'd scored when he didn't come home. The police came to the house the next morning to tell us he was in hospital in a bad way and ask us some questions.

He died that night.Sad

CoffeandTiaMaria · 10/08/2023 12:06

Viral myocarditis is often a cause, no symptoms.
As someone who’s had it, very luckily survived it albeit with severe heart failure, I know just how fortunate I am. I was told that I would have died within 24 hours, probably in my sleep.
As it was massive medical intervention at a major hospital saved my life.

XelaM · 10/08/2023 12:08

The charity CRY test young people for any heart defects for free I believe. My place of work had everyone under 35 tested by this charity after my aforementioned colleague died (in return for a donation).

My sister in law was found dead after being ill.for a,few days she and her kids just thought it wss a virus that would get better it was sepsis.

Truemilk · 10/08/2023 12:11

There seems to be a lot of stories where the people who died were exercising shortly beforehand or that they were the fittest people. That could sometimes be a big factor I think.

ggglimpopo · 10/08/2023 12:12

My daughter Maude died of SUDC - sudden unexplained death in childhood. Sudden death is rare, but it does happen- statistics vary but are roughly 2.7 per 100,000 deaths in persons aged under 40, discounting SIDS (under 1 year)

LakeTiticaca · 10/08/2023 12:16

I agree it's very frightening.
A girl who had been a year below me in school, a fit active girl who played in the sports team, died unexpectedly age 18 with no warning. I don't think a cause of death was ever fully discovered.
This was over 40 years ago. So sad xx

TogetherInEclecticDreams · 10/08/2023 12:19

My lovely cousin. He'd had a medical for work only weeks earlier and was very fit. He took the dog for a walk and was found in the park with the dog by his side. They said he had a congenital heart defect (my DD also has it) that had gone undiagnosed.

I know a girl who died suddenly of a previoulsy unknown heart issue age 21

peachgreen · 10/08/2023 12:23

My DH had a cardiac arrest at 42. Taught me that it can happen to anyone and tomorrow is promised to nobody.

StopStartStop · 10/08/2023 12:24

'Young adults' are 16-21!

I'm sorry for your losses.

Many people die in that age range - I worked with a chap who was just rising from saying his prayers, and dropped dead. 36 years old. A four-year old sister of a boy in my class at primary school died in her sleep. My friend's dad dropped dead playing squash, early 40s. A colleague, a little older, dropped dead reaching for a cup of tea. My mother's best friend died of an aneurism, aged seven; I was never allowed to wear red ribbons because she always did.

We don't know when, and often we don't know how.
Just in case it's on the cards for me soon (and to save for later), goodbye, thank you for your company, thank you for the woo and toddler-said threads, the overnight cafe and for your wit and wisdom. Be well.

Just in case!

Window82 · 10/08/2023 12:25

Yes two healthy male friends age of 40. Both of cardiac arrest, both found at post mortem congenital heart issues. Generally always a reason. Devastating level of loss - wives, kids, parents, siblings. As friends we felt it so deeply can’t imagine the pain for them.

ClemmyTine · 10/08/2023 12:32

It's a terrible thing for the families of the loved ones that died suddenly. But it seems much more common than you'd think going by this thread.

I wish the conspiracy theorist/anti vaxxers would realise this before trying to frighten and ridicule those that have had the COVID jab.

Kabbalah · 10/08/2023 12:33

Remember, suicide is the biggest killer in that age group.

loveandpoprockz · 10/08/2023 12:35

It happened to my cousins partner. She woke up one morning and he was dead in bed.
