Demogorgans best

WhatcreaturemaderthishHellWEB · 07/08/2023 17:52

@Agapornis

Several people I actually know have ended up quite poorly from false widow bites.

Two men, one leg turned black iv antibiotics and another man nealry lost his arm. Then more "minor" bites resulting in badly swollen round bite and antibiotics.

Please feel free free to Google increase in venum of false widows.

Might be spiders. Might be tigers. Not sure which is worse

tt9 · 07/08/2023 18:20

@NancyJoan tigers are lovely. I would be over the moon if there was one nesting by my house. they look ever so cuddly.
spiders are also nice once one gets to know them.

NeverDropYourMooncup · 07/08/2023 18:21

I know one person who says they were very ill because of a false widow bite.

Personally, I suspect that the fact they're a poorly controlled diabetic with considerable retinopathy (so long term poor control and vulnerability to infection), aren't a fan of cleaning and have cats means it's more likely the cat they share their bed with is more likely to have caused it with a claw fresh from the litter tray than something they've been scared of since they read about them in the paper.

I'm sure there's an uptick in 'I've got a phobia'/screeching and wailing about cats/dogs/thunder/horses/frogs/snakes/spiders/beetles/vomit/blood/bees/mice/butterflies since the internet became a thing.

They are beautiful. But I fear they might get a bit bitey quite quickly.

It's funny how all these people being bitten immediately have great spider identification skills Grin

WhatcreaturemaderthishHellWEB · 07/08/2023 18:30

@Agapornis false widows are distinctive. You can really mistake them for anything else.
The nurses at the hospital said false widow as well because they see so many.

I can't understand why you're being very defensive about them!

IKEA used to sell cheap nets, not sure if they still do, think they were called Lille. They aren't strong but are fine if you are gentle with them, and I just replace them when they split.
Get good quality velcro if you can because heat makes it peel off. I buy a big roll and replace the bits that need doing, annually.
Otherwise look at the mesh that is used to keep cats from climbing out of windows. I keep meaning to get some but after 10 years am still using net curtain panels as I bought a lot of them.

Even funnier that severe reactions are incredibly rare but the OP knows all the people that have experienced them.

I am intrigued now. Can someone tell me who lives here, I’ve never seen it but it’s been there for years. Don’t worry, I’ve no intention of rehoming my pet.

Tube web Spider. Iridescent green fangs, fluffy and very big.

GrannyAchingsShepherdsHut · 07/08/2023 20:40

@ForeverTeach if you REALLY want to know, tickle the tip of a blade of grass almost imperceptibly across the ends of a couple of the long strands of web fanning out. Be warned, whatever comes out will be moving very fast!!

WhatcreaturemaderthishHellWEB · 07/08/2023 20:42

@ArmWrestlingWithChasNDave.. This is kind of the point. They used to be rare and they are becoming more prevalent as the spider is becoming more prevalent? Like xl bully attacks... As the no of dogs grows so do the attacks.

We have spiders the size of small mice running around our house! Even the cats don't go near them 😆
So far the plan to leave them alone to live their life hasn't resulted in any fatalities in my family so we will continue to live alongside them quite happily.
I agree with another poster...a lot of (women) screeching over a harmless creature isn't cute, it's sad. Most of them have learned it from their mothers and so it continues.
Shockingly enough, my children didn't see me flapping every time I saw a spider so they don't even register them either.

Some people are scared of spiders regardless. Not because it’s cute, because they have a genuine phobia

WhatcreaturemaderthishHellWEB · 07/08/2023 20:55

@ForeverTeach

We have a good few it those around on bricks in holes and in air bricks.

@Stressedafff indeed.

It's absolutely awful to feel so afraid of something but my genuine concern here is that it is an exotic spider... I've never seen anything like it... And coupled with my sighting a while ago 😱...

I've emailed the NHM bug identity email but I think they will also assume it's paper it's definitely a Web unless it's finely spun hair.

I think that in itself is pretty dashingly to them feminist cause and know men can be scared as well.

No. Bad reactions to false widow bites are extremely rare and will remain extremely rare. Most people will experience nothing but mild pain akin to a wasp or bee sting.

Would one of them be willing to lean out a window or go up a ladder to get a clearer photo for the NHM? They wouldn't have to get super close.

Well said👏 Couldn't agree more!
