Has anybody ever brought one of the pickled eggs from the big jar in the Chipshop? I honestly have never known anybody to.

My mate worked in a posh high street firm of solicitors in the mid 1990s after graduation. It was one of those “established 1885” sort of firms. The elderly partner used to treat everyone to fish and chips every Friday lunch time from the chippy a few doors down. My friend used to ask for pickled egg and chips. The partner used to find this bemusing and fascinating. His widow told my friend at his funeral years later that he still talked about it after he retired!

I make my own, and eat them all to myself with my home made corned beef. I’m classy, me.. oh and they don’t need to be refrigerated because they’re pickled. They keep for ages, but are best within about six weeks.

@shadowchancesassy it's a wally not a gherkin! Heathen

Hah! Was just going to ask if anyone calls them a Wally! My dearly departed nana used to call them that and although they’re a gherkin to this north Londoner, I walkways think of them as a Wally fondly!

When I worked in a chippy it seemed to be like 'Hive mind' behaviour when it came to selling picked eggs.
We'd go days without selling one then sell a whole jar or more in one shift.
We sold more than I ever expected to.
Also, pickled eggs were more popular than pickled onions.

Apparently Paul McCartney did. Shop in New Cross had a photo with him on the night he made the purchase proudly displayed.

You could buy the McCartney Special, a pickled egg and chips! Grin
