Has anybody ever brought one of the pickled eggs from the big jar in the Chipshop? I honestly have never known anybody to.

No, but I've often wondered the same thing. One day I'll buy one just to try. I'm also morbidly curious about pizza crunch...

Oh now pizza crunch is a must-try. Loads of salt and vinegar and a can of Irn Bru..

Pickled eggs... I just can't bring myself to. I like the big pickled onions, but no. Have never seen anyone order one either

Yes, I love pickled eggs, I ask for them to be wrapped up in the chip paper, so delicious! If I fancy a snack in a pub I get one and a bag of salt and vinegar crisps and shake them together- yum! I did actually ask our chippy out of curiosity whether many people bought them and she said they tend to get through a jar or two a week which surprised me a bit as most people say ew when I have one.

A week after I got engaged to DH, we went to a party at a working men's club. His mates clubbed together and spent £12 buying the entire jar to give to me as a belated engagement gift 😂

How much is a pickled egg in a chip shop or pub?

Jellykat · 06/08/2023 19:39

Yes, i love them!

itsgettingweird · 06/08/2023 19:39

If I go to the chippy then it's compulsory!!!!

About 80p here which is quite wild really, but the jars are pricey to buy yourself and haven't been able to perfect making my own that taste as good yet (although that would certainly be cheaper)

TomatoSandwiches · 06/08/2023 19:41

I have, once, I'm sure you can extrapolate from that.

mariiiaa · 06/08/2023 19:41

They make me feel nauseous.

It's bush tucker trial territory 🤢

My brother once won a pickled egg eating competition. In a pub rather than a chip shop, but same massive jar scenario.

By the end he was swallowing them whole. We know this because they were still whole when he vomited them back up.

None of this makes me likely to purchase a pickled egg, in any form, from any establishment, ever.

Shock

I am picturing them firing neatly back out, like he's a pickled egg dispenser Grin

CheerfulBunny · 06/08/2023 19:42

Yep. Texture + smell= vile. Not for me, ta.

What do they taste like? Vinegary egg?

Exactly this! So tasty!

Bigpaintinglittlepainting · 06/08/2023 19:44

I love pickled eggs ! We used to eat them in the pub in a little paper cake casing with pepper and salt and vinegar crisps ! We were probably quite drunk and trying to sober up.

I have just made my own for lunches so I'm definitely going to try making soy ones

NeedToKnow101 · 06/08/2023 19:44

I threw one at someone once.

wetpebbles · 06/08/2023 19:45

Pickled guerkins 10/10
Pickled eggs 0/10

ThereIbledit · 06/08/2023 19:45

I do love a good picked egg. The ones in the chip shop are too strongly vinegary for me really, but I do still have them sometimes.

Home bargains or food warehouse ones are in a sort of watered down vinegar and I can eat a whole (small) jar in a day if I get carried away.

The best ones are home made ones from a farmers market though, with sugar and spices in the vinegar!

transparentday · 06/08/2023 19:46

DH has his own jar of pickled eggs in our kitchen cupboard.

transparentday · 06/08/2023 19:48

I think he actually got it from home bargains @ThereIbledit

I'd be concerned at how long the jar had been sitting there, given I've never seen anyone order one! How long do they keep once opened? The jars are enormous!

I wondered this too. Plus shouldn't they be kept in the fridge with them being cooked eggs.

BusinessClass · 06/08/2023 19:51

@shadowchancesassy it's a wally not a gherkin! Heathen

YetMoreNewBeginnings · 06/08/2023 19:52

The chip shop I worked in in mg early 20s (so a few years ago now) used to get through two jars a week minimum.

on pay weekend usually another jar with all the extra orders.

I still hate the smell of them from that job!

FiveGoMadInDorset · 06/08/2023 19:53

DS works in a chip shop, a lady came and bought 6, she was drunk

MrsMarzetti · 06/08/2023 19:55

Husband loves them. I make him one jar a year and make myself a jar of pickled onions.

budgiegirl · 06/08/2023 19:56

I had a craving for them when I was pregnant with my second son. DH would go to the chippy on the way home from work and buy two or three most days. I haven't had one since though, and that was 21 years ago!

HelloChompy · 06/08/2023 20:01

Yes, I love them!
