If someone told you that their child was 23 and already earning £60k, would you believe them?

Why wouldn’t you believe them?

Id think it was superb and well done and would want to know what and how they achieved it!

Snowtrails · 04/08/2023 17:18

Most 23 year olds dont. What's the job?

Spacemoon · 04/08/2023 17:18

I'd believe them of course, but unless I'd specifically asked (which I wouldn't!) I would question WHY they felt the need to share that info. Be proud of your kids, sure, say they've managed to get their selves a good job and are happy and settled, but I'll never understand parents who have to brag about exactly how much their kids are earning. It's really weird and kinda gross.

Yes, unless they had form for lying.

Why wouldn’t I?

BoohooWoohoo · 04/08/2023 17:18

Yes. I'm assuming that they work in a job like law at a magic circle firm?

sheworemellowyellow · 04/08/2023 17:19

I was, and that was over 20 years ago (now earning sweet FA!). So, yes.

68rabbits · 04/08/2023 17:19

I would assume either a social media influencer, OnlyFans, or started their own business. It's less believable if they've somehow worked their way up in a company!

CandyLeBonBon · 04/08/2023 17:19

Depends on the person, their field of expertise, their qualifications and what I know of them. And also the character of the person telling me.

greydressinggownofdoom · 04/08/2023 17:19

Yes I would (one of mine did indeed earn more than that age 23 - the other two don't even yet!)

Moredarkchocolateplease · 04/08/2023 17:20

Absolutely yes. In the City in law or banking I'd assume, or IT contracting outside London.

CornishGem1975 · 04/08/2023 17:21

I know a 17 year old who makes about £50k (social media 🙄)

Wenfy · 04/08/2023 17:21

My nephew was earning 60k from 21 (he was a fully qualified plumber and highly regarded). Another nephew was earning 70kish from 19 as a contracting sql developer . My brother was earning 80k from 24 as locum pharmacist

GalileoHumpkins · 04/08/2023 17:23

I wouldn't care enough to question it.

LittleBearPad · 04/08/2023 17:25

Yes - lawyer at a magic circle firm. Investment Bank graduate. Perfectly possible.

Certain tradesmen (plumbers!) could easily be earning that much at 23.

My 24 dd is on not much less than that as executive assistant in London..she started working aged 18, moved jobs twice, got promoted up quickly, took opportunities and is good at her job...it's not just law or finance.
Her fiance is in HR aged 27 he is on 70k

curlymom · 04/08/2023 17:33

Yes one of my children does. But I wouldn’t ask people what their kids earn

ErrolTheDragon · 04/08/2023 17:34

It'd depend entirely on what their job was, obviously.

Are lawyers through their training by 23, I thought it took longer?

WimbledonPimms · 04/08/2023 17:34

Mine does, probably more tbh I don't tend to ask. He works around 15 hrs per week self employed but also has passive income streams.
