If someone told you that their child was 23 and already earning £60k, would you believe them?

OP posts:
LauraPausini · 04/08/2023 18:18

Yes very achievable in consultancy / law / investment banking etc. in London.

W0tnow · 04/08/2023 18:18

I would never mention it. Who would ?..

FrivolousTreeDuck · 04/08/2023 18:20

Easily done in the tech sector.

SoShallINever · 04/08/2023 18:21

2 of mine are on close to that and one is only 21 and straight out of apprenticeship.
Software engineering.
Both work from home in their PJ'S.
My third DC who definitely has the hardest job (intensive care nurse) is on £27k. Just goes to show what is valued and what isn't.

User6424678852 · 04/08/2023 18:21

Yes, I earned £60k at 25 (IT) and that was 25 years ago.

Pinkitydrinkity · 04/08/2023 18:21

Yes I would believe them. Weird Q.

storminabuttercup · 04/08/2023 18:21

It's not even just grad jobs. I know someone who takes home similar in a sales type role, bonuses can be huge.

chopc · 04/08/2023 18:22

Starting salary of a solicitor £110k. So yes I'd believe them

Tweeps · 04/08/2023 18:23

DD’s bf got a 1st class honours degree in computer science and got a job straight out of uni on £58k a year, so yes, I would believe it.

Zone2NorthLondon · 04/08/2023 18:27

Law in a magic circle form, yes
finance in the city of london

citygirl1234567 · 04/08/2023 18:28

I did.

SoShallINever · 04/08/2023 18:28

I'm guessing you either work in the public services or in a minimum wage job OP? and therefore these sort of salaries are completely outside of your world?
It's bloody frustrating to me, to see those who are burning themselves out (NHS, Teaching, SW, Police ) being paid so poorly.
It is absolutely no wonder public service staff quit.

Obi73 · 04/08/2023 18:29

Yes - my child does

Marwoodsbigbreak · 04/08/2023 18:29

OP can you explain why you wouldn’t believe them?

PegasusReturns · 04/08/2023 18:29

Yes

there are 23 year olds making double that where I work.

ThanksItHasPockets · 04/08/2023 18:30

Several of my contemporaries graduated in 2004 and went straight on to £60k salaries so yes, nearly twenty years on I certainly would.

Ohmylovejune · 04/08/2023 18:31

Yes. I definitely know a 25 earning just over 50k, so there's no reason to disbelieve 60k at 23.

EarthSight · 04/08/2023 18:33

Marwoodsbigbreak · 04/08/2023 18:29

OP can you explain why you wouldn’t believe them?

I'd say it's because the mum is known for exaggeratingstuff about her child, or the OP comes from a background where this salary is far from the norm. In fact it would put you in a very small minority of people. Most jobs pay up to 30k.

JudgeRudy · 04/08/2023 18:33

Depends who said it really. I'd be a little surprised as it's certainly not the norm but eg if they were a decent tradie or trucker or even Only Fans/media, that sounds quite doable. If the conversation was with me I'd ne asking what he does for a living.

Dunkling · 04/08/2023 18:34

Yes, because my son does.

Out of uni and onto a graduate scheme that itself payed 35k, for 2 years.

Then contract with the same company, 55k.

SoShallINever · 04/08/2023 18:34

Marwoodsbigbreak · 04/08/2023 18:29

OP can you explain why you wouldn’t believe them?

Really?
Because for a lot of people in this country, that would seem utterly unbelievable.
A junior Dr is on £29k in their first year and £34k in their second.
For someone on minimum wage, £60k would be unimaginable at age 40, let alone at 23.
Can you really not see that?

ActDottie · 04/08/2023 18:35

Depends on the friend tbh. I have one who is a compulsive liar since we were children.

Chickpea17 · 04/08/2023 18:35

Yes I knew quite a few people who I worked offshore with earn 70k a year self-employed under 25

Ohmylovejune · 04/08/2023 18:37

Yes thinking about it my DD knows someone on 100k and she's in her 20s too. She's in sales and actually on really basic money but the rest is bonuses so not guaranteed but it's been a booming industry for a few years so she's reaped the benefits of being a fab salesperson.

Pipsquiggle · 04/08/2023 18:38

Context is everything.

Who is this 'someone?'
A random you meet at a party who seems to boast / brag about everything from wage to cars to holidays .......................... Then I would probably take it with a pinch of salt

If it is a friend who has a clever child, studied some sort of finance / IT degree and went onto a top bank, then yes, I would believe them
