If someone told you that their child was 23 and already earning £60k, would you believe them?

I would ask what the job was, there are “Geeks” in many fields that can command that salary. If he/she turned up in a flash car that would confirm it.

Although a surprising number of 23 yos can't drive!

BarleySugars · 04/08/2023 18:05

Yes, a friend and a family member were on this in their mid 20s, why not? One works in the energy industry the other is a data analyst and a director at 30.

...wish i had gone into data analysis tbh!

nowahousewife · 04/08/2023 18:06

definitely very doable here in London. My kids are on not much below this in their early 20’s and their friends who are in magic circle law firms or in the city are earning well in excess of this.
Being London they are still living in house shares and will still need help from their parents if they want to buy a house.

Yes.

Georgyporky · 04/08/2023 18:06

Why would anyone tell their parents how much they were earning?

drpet49 · 04/08/2023 18:07

VimFuego101 · 04/08/2023 17:36

I'd question whether the child was OK with their parent sharing their salary information - to me, that's very private. The actual salary seems plausible depending on their career path.

@VimFuego101 are you for real? Get a life

Katey83 · 04/08/2023 18:07

Sure. Some of my brother’s Oxford grad mates were on £90k in their first graduate corporate jobs (plus bonus!). I definitely went into the wrong game…

Why wouldn’t they?

riceuten · 04/08/2023 18:07

Possibly. Though I would imagine it would not be £60k basic.

ChampagneLassie · 04/08/2023 18:08

I can think of a handful of jobs where this is possible so not at all unbelievable.

YukoandHiro · 04/08/2023 18:09

Depends what they were doing - in any kind of sales or city or corporate legal role it's highly believable

loreau · 04/08/2023 18:10

My husband's post qualification salary was that as a London lawyer. I spent 25 years reaching his starting salary. For that kind of money they've bought his/her soul. I wouldn't wish that on anyone.

bryceQ · 04/08/2023 18:11

I would feel mortified if my mum told people how much I earned. I was on this at 24 and over 100k by 27 but I never told anyone (except an anonymous forum!) I was in marketing.

I know you can get these salaries in law easily

backtogrey · 04/08/2023 18:11

Why would you not believe them?

Dotcheck · 04/08/2023 18:12

Yes- the possibilities go beyond banking and law. A friends son is in cybersecurity at that age and earning about that.

Good on em I say

PretendUsername · 04/08/2023 18:15

Yes I would believe them. And then I would judge them for telling people the specific amount their child earns.

Not only is it incredibly boastful and crass, their adult child may also want a say in their private business being aired.

TheChosenTwo · 04/08/2023 18:15

Yes - what would anyone get out of lying about the income of their dc?

LuluBlakey1 · 04/08/2023 18:15

Yes. My godson works for Deloitte and earns almost that at 23.

electriclight · 04/08/2023 18:16

My dc earn similar.

Mathsstatsmaths · 04/08/2023 18:16

Yes my DC did maths at university and went into a grad job with a major retailer as a graduate trainee. Started on about £50k plus car. 7 years later and several promotions and they are director level and on about £150k (don’t know the exact amount). I’m very proud of them, they have worked really hard.

LuluBlakey1 · 04/08/2023 18:17

My friend's son does something in computing for TFL and earns £55,0000 at 25.

ArcticSkewer · 04/08/2023 18:17

Yep. Mine out-earned me from day 1

Goldengamer · 04/08/2023 18:18

Depends what he does?, if he’s in banking , yes and more , my nephew is one and was earning more than that in his 20s , he’s now a big shot and we don’t see him these days, we are beneath him . My son is 24 and must be on that, he’s a carpet fitter and good ones earn that at least !

PerspiringElizabeth · 04/08/2023 18:18

Yes

Allwelcone · 04/08/2023 18:18

Omg I actually did tell the occasional person my ds was earning that (true - marketing) but only because I was so amazed myself!!
I also have no qualms discussing money but try to ensure I'm not insensitive about who to iykwim
