Does anyone else enjoy the occasional dinner school type meal?

I'm trying to clear out my fridge and freezer so tonight I'm having cheddar mash(I will of course be adding more cheese and butter) with baked beans and I might have some tinned peaches for pudding.(I love tinned peaches)

I'm really looking forward to it. Does anyone else enjoy the odd "dinner school" meal? And if so what's your favourite.

You can't beat fish fingers, chips and spaghetti hoops as a school dinner meal! Old school sponge with custard for pudding too!!! Enjoy your cheesy mash!

MrsPelligrinoPetrichor · 03/08/2023 16:13

Fish fingers, chips and beans with extra salt and vinegar. Brings me right back to Fridays of youth at boarding school. Yum!

BingoBastards · 03/08/2023 16:30

Yes, I'm lucky enough to live near an old school type cafe so frequently go for rhubarb crumble and custard

YesitsBess · 03/08/2023 16:30

Today for lunch (I'm off work poorly and waiting for shopping) I had two hotdogs from a jar, in fingerprint buns, with ketchup and yellow mustard. 🌭

I was coming to say fish fingers, waffles and beans! The best.

Oh definitely. We have fishfingers , chips and beans/hoops every now and then. Feels like comfort food.

QueefQueen80s · 03/08/2023 17:16

Eat them all the time 🤣

gogomoto · 03/08/2023 17:23

Not really, mostly fills me with dread but I do like proper puddings, have a great steam rolypoly pudding recipe that serves 96!

TokyoSushi · 03/08/2023 17:25

Sausage, chips & beans, dinner of champions!

TastesLikeStrawberriesOnASummerEvening · 03/08/2023 17:27

Yep, my favourite is sausage rolls and beans, I also love fish fingers, tinned sketti and waffles.
My corner shop sells the crap cheap cake squares with white icing and hundreds and thousands on, yum 😋

TomatoSandwiches · 03/08/2023 17:30

Cheese and potato pie with beans and brown sauce 😋

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 03/08/2023 17:31

I would kill for a slice of cornflake tart with pink custard.

DP likes making cheese and potato bake - mash, sautéed onions and leeks plus a load of cheese.

We sometimes have veggie sausages with wedges, peas and gravy which always feels a bit old school.

Same here . I had Sainsbury’s fresh fingers baked bean with mayo, ketchup, vinegar and salt for supper last night…absolutely bloody delicious!

SgtCawood · 03/08/2023 17:36

Secretly like a school-style deeply inauthentic spag bol with overcooked spaghetti and that strange powdery parmesan.

continentallentil · 03/08/2023 17:42

I was in hospital for a week once, quite ill and very weak.

As I got better I really loved the hospital food! It was very school lunch and very comforting. I have no idea if it was any good, I was just so pleased to be able to eat I think.

ItsCalledAConversation · 03/08/2023 17:45

Love it - also love institutional/hospital food in general.

Cheesy mash with fried onions in it, spam and beans
”curry” made with mince and peas
“burger” (no bread) served with mash and peas/carrots
Cobbler - stew with a sort of chewy scone on top
Bread roll with turkey dinosaur, coleslaw and cheap salad in it
Any sponge pudding with custard with skin on it for extra texture!

Ladyoftheknight · 03/08/2023 17:55

Cheap sausages, chips, beans with school cake (vanilla sponge with water icing and sprinkles) with pink coloured custard for dessert. I wish I hadn't made dinner already, I want to change my option now!

LlynTegid · 03/08/2023 17:57

If you enjoy it, great, but it is not for me.

Luckydog7 · 03/08/2023 18:04

I made cornflake tart yesterday as it was a school favorite. Sooo nostalgic. Must be served with instant custard.

GalileoHumpkins · 03/08/2023 18:07

Good god no, thinking about school dinners makes me want to barf. All those revolting puddings 😬

Is there any left? I'll be round in half an hour.

EspanolSiesta · 03/08/2023 18:29

I'm a school governor and spend a lot of time in the school, sometimes when we are interviewing I can be there all day and then I get a school dinner!!!

I have a chronic illness, (behaving for now), so used to spend a lot of time in hospital, their doughnuts were the best I've ever had.
