Does anyone else enjoy the occasional dinner school type meal?

I'm trying to clear out my fridge and freezer so tonight I'm having cheddar mash(I will of course be adding more cheese and butter) with baked beans and I might have some tinned peaches for pudding.(I love tinned peaches)

I'm really looking forward to it. Does anyone else enjoy the odd "dinner school" meal? And if so what's your favourite.

Thank you so much for starting this thread! I don't feel great but cheesy mash sounds absolutely perfect right now so I'm off to make it.

SayNoToCamping · 03/08/2023 18:36

It was delicious.

I haven't had fish fingers or hotdogs for ages. Now I want those. Also iced cake and custard. That was my favourite. The school made their own custard and it was so good. I'm glad to see that I'm not quite alone in having loved the skin on custard.

Just put fish fingers and chips in the oven😊

AHugeTinyMistake · 03/08/2023 18:41

LOVED cheese and potato pie at school 😋

My favourite. With beans.

And then chocolate concrete and that brown custard they always did with it. I think it was supposed to be chocolate but it didn't taste like chocolate

I am rather partial to a butterscotch tart from the bakers

Blueuggboots · 03/08/2023 18:47

Nancy Burtwhistle has a recipe for school dinner pie- it's absolutely amazing!!

GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER · 03/08/2023 19:20

Now and then I make what we call ‘school dinner mince’ which dh really likes (he’s very easily pleased) but my version isn’t just mince, it’s plus red lentils and lots of finely chopped carrot, celery and mushrooms. With boiled or mashed potatoes and frozen peas.

I batch cook it, then a few additions turn one lot into spag Bol sauce, another lot into chilli.

Fish fingers, beans and chips is a firm favourite in this house.

I confess I do like the microwave chicken dinner ready meal also that reminds me of school roasts!

Whattodo112222 · 03/08/2023 19:23

I used to love the chocolate square cake with chocolate custard too.

SOD OFF MY CHILDHOOD! Sorry no, all eaten, greedy me...

Its relatively easy to make though, BBC food have a recipe which is what I used. its a basic pasty shell (i just bought rolled stuff). blind baked then jam on the bottom. Cornflakes tossed in butter and golden syrup poured in and then baked briefly to slightly toast.

:(

Thank you. I must try making one. Any ideas on the pink custard?

inigomontoyahwillcox · 03/08/2023 20:23

I could bloody murder a butterscotch tart or treacle (syrup) sponge with custard.

It's possible to make a passable (albeit anaemic looking) treacle sponge in the microwave.

Oh dear, these dinners sound like my everyday dinners 😂

We have a takeaway that does 'school puddings' and they are nice but far too fresh and flavoursome to be authentic. What even was that pink/green/brown custard - tasted of nothing at all but was so good!

I remember my friend finding a snail shell in the chicken mince pie - the diner lady said not to tell anyone because all the other kids would be jealous! Clever Mrs Dixon!!

@RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie

Hmm we always had it with normal yellow custard, powder from a tin naturally. Pink custard was reserved for any pink iced cake/white cake. chocolate (or a least it was brown) custard went with a cube of chocolate sponge. i used to mash up the sponge with the custard and eat it as a delicious sludge...mmmm

FearTheWankingDead · 03/08/2023 21:45

Does any of it taste as good off a proper plate? ☹️
I miss those school dinner plates.

MrsWombat · 03/08/2023 21:53

I work in a school and occasionally have a school dinner. DP is very jealous when I send him photos of my roast dinner when he's having an asda meal deal again. 😅

Same 🤣

Our school served little pots of angel delight sprinkled with hundreds and thousands, I absolutely love the stuff and put a couple of pks in my weekly shop 😀

crackofdoom · 03/08/2023 22:22

Can confirm that nothing tastes better while you're trapped in the maternity wing holding pattern waiting for the pessary to kick in and your contractions to start than lentil crumble, gravy and dodgy looking veg followed by sponge pudding and custard. Served from a trolley, eaten in your pyjamas in a communal dining room. Just like school- if all the students were pregnant 😬

Love it - also love institutional/hospital food in general.

i think I must do too. I liked hospital food. And my go to comfort food used to be Sainsburys cafe. Until they closed them down!

Tisfortired · 03/08/2023 23:23

My favourite at primary school was pizza, mash and beans 🤣 I would still eat it now to be fair. Was also partial to the cheese and bean pie. At secondary school I ate chips and curry for five years straight.

At my primary school we also had what was essentially a flat square sausage, covered in cornflakes and deep fried. That was a delicacy I have never encountered since unfortunately.

Groutyonehereagain · 03/08/2023 23:26

I still love steak and kidney pie.
