I don't think I really understand what a fascist is.

Cricket.

Insurance makes no sense to me like health insurance and contents insurance. I'm sure I've lost out on a lot of money from not understanding when and how to claim. Might as well not have it!

Really don't have a good grasp of economics either

When to use effect and affect. Always have a block on them.

The procurement process at work. 8 years in and I still cannot get my head around po numbers and how they actually link invoices in the way they do it.

I can explain how this should work @TeenLifeMum

Someone wants to buy something - first they raise a Purchase Order (PO)
Say this is because they want to spend £100 on widgets with Company X
They get the PO approved, now they're allowed to spend £100 with Company X
They send the PO to Company X, which then supplies £100 of widgets
The person who receives the widgets "receipts" the Purchase Order to say "Yes, I have received £100 of widgets from Company X
Company X put the PO number on their invoice for the £100 of widgets
When the invoice is received the accounts payable dept will look for the PO number and they will match the invoice, the PO and the receipt (this is called a 3 way match, sometimes there isn't any receipting) - and as long as all 3 match, this will generally allow them to pay the invoice

The process can vary and plenty can go wrong in the above but generally that's it! HTH :)

Thanks, I'll add to this thread that I have no real idea what a sodding verb or noun is. But I can speak proper, I promise innit.

Inflation affects the cost of living.
Inflation has an effect on the cost of living.
My plants are affected by greenfly.
Greenfly have had a serious effect on my plants.

That might not help but thought I’d throw it in just in case!

Electricity. What is it doing sitting hiding behind plug sockets until we need it, and why doesn't it just all...leak out.

Strawberrypicnic · 03/08/2023 13:42

VAT

NoraLuka · 03/08/2023 13:42

I have to think about left and right every time, I don’t know it instinctively like everyone else seems to.

RoseslnTheHospital · 03/08/2023 13:42

@inigomontoyahwillcox the thing about computers is that pretty much all they do "underneath the hood" is store and manipulate numbers. Anything you want a computer to store and manipulate needs to be converted into a sequence of numbers that represent the original item. The clever part is the methods that have been developed to convert images, sound and so on into sequences of numbers that represent the original.

How if the world 🌍 is round, how the people who live at the bottom aren't upside down.

madeinmanc · 03/08/2023 13:42

Both "affect" and "effect" can be used as either nouns or verbs, but the noun usage of "affect" is less common and mainly relates to psychology.

ThreeRingCircus · 03/08/2023 13:43

Why the word "spendthrift" means someone that spends a lot of money in an extravagant way rather than the opposite, someone that is tight or thrifty with money. I just cannot get the definition to stick in my brain.

Yes to me affect is about feelings whereas effect can be anything.

kraftyKitten · 03/08/2023 13:44

The sub disaster . The people perished in a fraction of a second . Not even a second . I can't get my head around that .

RooRooCooChoo · 03/08/2023 13:44

Cricket. I have come to believe it's an elaborate hoax, as no game designed for fun can actually be that complicated.

BeggyMitchell · 03/08/2023 13:45

Not just feelings: pollution can 'affect' the ozone layer for e.g.

SprinkleRainbow · 03/08/2023 13:45

A PO number is just a reference number to that specific order. The invoice links because the items on it match what's on the PO number.

So a PO is like filling your basket online and ordering, then you get a receipt (your invoice) to say what you've brought and how much it costs.
Just in business you don't pay before you get the receipt (most the time) 😊

MillenialAvocado · 03/08/2023 13:46

Basically anything that goes on at work

Notveryanything · 03/08/2023 13:46

I don't understand most of the things mentioned.

I don't understand how telephones work.

Strawberrypicnic · 03/08/2023 13:46

LadyAsnowt · 03/08/2023 13:31

In other words, one is a verb (affect) and one is a noun (effect).

It is a bit trickier than that though, because affect can also be a noun ('emotional affect' in psychology) and effect can also be a verb ('to effect change')...

DNLove · 03/08/2023 13:46

Gross is the total - it's the amount that makes you sick cause you never see it (sick is gross), your lucky to be left with what's left in the net after every thing else has sieved away.

YukoandHiro · 03/08/2023 13:47

Space time.

I've watched endless documentaries by Brian Cox and what not.

How can time and space be one thing? How can time "bend"?

I don't get it.
