Dog accessories - they have a coat for the depths of winter but that's it.
Bath bombs - completely pointless.
Many kitchen gadgets.
Clothes/shoes that aren't a perfect fit.

OP I love this thread 👍🏻

lots in my list but a few of my biggest no nos that I’d never stray from

those air freshener plug ins - honestly what a waste a few drops of essential oils in water do just fine

most fancy cleaning products - you need bleach, zorflora, fairy and white vinegar. That’s it!

branded towels and bedding - I can’t tell the difference!

I also don't buy air freshener/ plug in type things (or wax melts/ those stick things).

I disagree on your list of cleaning products - you don't need zoflora or bleach!

It's a breeding ground for bacteria, so potentially bad for birds' health.

Birds eat fucking worms ffs

Their digestive systems have evolved to eating worms, not left over oil from roast potatoes.

Mutabiliss · 01/08/2023 08:58

I have never understood how you clean with bleach. Partly because it smells horrible, I would hate my house to smell like that all the time. But also - do you mix up fresh cleaning product every day? Can you leave it mixed? How do you know what solution to make? Don't your clothes get bleach stains all the time? How do you just do a quick wipe of the kitchen surfaces, do you get your gloves and cleaning clothes on every time? I just don't get it.

Any kind of TV show with a public vote - Strictly, Love Island, X Factor etc. The DC used to think I was so mean but I think they understand what a waste of money it is now

All of those shows are free votes on the app or online in strictlys case.

Anything Heinz. Always had heinz beans growing up and salad cream/ ketchup. Not had salad cream for years and everything else is own brand.

I do wonder who their customers are these days over £4 for a (big) bottle of sauce. £2 for soup over £1 for a single can of beans. They don’t even do well in blind Taste tests.

Me, I don't like other brands. Probably because I grew up eating Heinz, but I try others now and again and they're just not right.

There's nothing Heinz I eat a huge amount of though, so it's hardly costing me a fortune. £4 on some ketchup every couple of months is fine.

Few comments saying all I need to cheap is bleach, fairy liquid and zoflora - can someone explain how I use all these products to clean? Like in the bathroom, what combo would I use for floor, sink etc?

I pour kitchen fat into a ramekin and chuck it in the next slow cooker meal.

Kitchen roll. I do not understand how people NEED kitchen roll. What are they using it for?!

I don't understand how people are not using kitchen roll. In the last few weeks I've used it for:

  • cleaning up cat sick/errant poos/wees over the edge of the tray (I have two old cats)
  • cleaning up small spills (I don't have enough cloths to use a new one every time my child spills something)
  • drying off a cleaned surface so we can use it
  • dabbing grease off greasy food/keeping pancakes separate so they don't get soggy
  • wrapping cut flower stems to keep them damp while taking to a friend's house
  • cleaning windows (we don't get a newspaper so can't use that)
  • emergency tissue when you sneeze but aren't anywhere near a tissue
  • staunching nosebleeds (admittedly not ideal but better that that walk up the carpeted stairs bleeding)
  • dabbing small wounds

Kitchen roll is so useful. I understand you can use a cloth for all these things, but kitchen roll is just so much easier.

What's dish soap, and how do you use it? I like the sound of this!

It’s just another name for washing up liquid!

I’ve never been one for loads of different cleaning products- bleach and washing up liquid does it….clean everything with washing up liquid which I dilute into a scooshy spray bottle, and I only use bleach down the loo.

No fabric conditioner-I live in a very soft water area so we don’t need it.
No air fresheners/candles/diffusers etc-I don’t like the chemical smell, so just open windows.

I had a horrendous magazine habit when I was younger but gradually stopped buying them with the advent of t’internet, I’ve bought one occasionally at the airport but then get pissed off at the amount of adverts..

I’m quite low maintenance/lazy beauty wise, but I do get my hair coloured by my friend who’s a pro but does mates rates.

I DO use kitchen roll, but not a huge amount of it

midgetastic · 01/08/2023 09:17

Get more cloths
I still have my baby muslin cloths that are really useful where ever you seem to use kitchen roll

JenWillsiam · 01/08/2023 09:17

Zipps · 31/07/2023 22:38

I've also stopped buying separate shower gel- I use my face wash all over. Helps eliminate bathroom clutter.

That’s ridiculous. Face wash is considerably more expensive.

midgetastic · 01/08/2023 09:17

You can also use worn out clothes to make cloths

What do you use now? Dilute some washing up liquid in an empty spray bottle and use that in the way you’d use whatever specific cleaner you use now, use on everything, then I use a quick swoosh of bleach down the loo (I know not everyone agrees with this but we all have our thing!)

All the mumsnetters walking around smelling of absolutely nothing 🤣 love these threads always turns into competitive tight arse-ness.

It is becoming a bit 'Four Yorkshireman'.

Which these threads always do.

Fabric conditioner - first to see if it would help with allergies, but then realised it's totally unnecessary (and I really hate the chemical-floral smell)

100% agree! Worst thing about buying 2nd hand clothes is getting rid of conditioner smells!

Ameanstreakamilewide · 01/08/2023 09:24

The PP who doesn't buy Home Insurance has genuinely worried me.

I know they said that they like to live dangerously', but not buying home/contents insurance isn't the place to stick it to the man.

All the ‘specialist’ spray cleaners . Fairy liquid and bleach - that’s all you need!

Totally agree.

alwaysmovingforwards · 01/08/2023 09:27

And white vinegar

I agree, I hope to hell it never happens but I have visions of her being subject of a social media appeal having lost everything but the clothes she stands up in!

50FootWave · 01/08/2023 09:27

Thanks, @Heyhoherewegoagain ! I was imagining a big brick of carbolic soap!

I switched to using an ECO egg (with the pellets) for laundry a couple of years ago - absolute game changer, will never go back to using washing powder/pods.

Kitchen roll. Never understood it.

Excellent for floor spills and you can just throw away afterwards. Sponges and cloths have to be washed.

I have a cat. When she throws up, I mop up with kitchen roll and throw away immediately., before cleaning the floor. I wouldn't really want to re-use a sponge of cloth that has been used to clean up cat sick.
