Dog accessories - they have a coat for the depths of winter but that's it.
Bath bombs - completely pointless.
Many kitchen gadgets.
Clothes/shoes that aren't a perfect fit.

We stopped buying newspapers about ten years ago.

I don't understand how you manage without kitchen roll? We ran out tonight and I've just cooked vegetarian burgers on a pan. There is some grease and I would use the kitchen roll to wipe that up rather than pour down the drain. What do you do?

Although I hate using paper that just gets thrown away, I totally agree with you. I always wipe greasy pans with paper. DH sometimes puts them in the sink to soak and everything gets covered in fat. And so the bowl has to be wiped with paper!

Ameanstreakamilewide · 01/08/2023 09:37

@TheEyesOfLucyJordon 😂

We never had a cup. We used to drink out of rolled up newspaper.

Best we could manage was to suck on a piece o' damp cloth.

Same energy!

You pour grease down the drain, if you don't have kitchen roll?!
You do realise that's a big no-no?! As it causes "fatbergs" in the sewers and clogs up pipes 🫤

I buy cheap porridge oats for absorbing oil. Sprinkle a thin layer into the pan, leave for a few minutes to absorb the oil and then scrape them into the bin. Cheaper and more environmentally friendly.

I don't understand how people are not using kitchen roll. In the last few weeks I've used it for:

  • cleaning up cat sick/errant poos/wees over the edge of the tray (I have two old cats)
  • cleaning up small spills (I don't have enough cloths to use a new one every time my child spills something)
  • drying off a cleaned surface so we can use it
  • dabbing grease off greasy food/keeping pancakes separate so they don't get soggy
  • wrapping cut flower stems to keep them damp while taking to a friend's house
  • cleaning windows (we don't get a newspaper so can't use that)
  • emergency tissue when you sneeze but aren't anywhere near a tissue
  • staunching nosebleeds (admittedly not ideal but better that that walk up the carpeted stairs bleeding)
  • dabbing small wounds

Kitchen roll is so useful. I understand you can use a cloth for all these things, but kitchen roll is just so much easier.

Kitchen roll isn't any easier than grabbing a cloth 😕

Celebrity perfumes. In fact, paying £70 for any type of perfume.
Re bath bombs, you can make your own (recipes online). Cheap, easy (once you get the mix right) and you can scent with eg rose oil and use food colouring.

Willmafrockfit · 01/08/2023 09:42

oh yes a newspaper
last time was when i got it free in Waitrose

AsterixAndPersimmon · 01/08/2023 09:42

I don’t get the ‘cleaning the pan with kitchen roll’.
How much fat do you use when cooking that you will need to pour the oil out if you don’t use kitchen roll?

For the poster who said she can’t use newspaper to clean her window because she doesn’t buy them. I simply take a free newspaper when doing my shopping at LIdl.

Willmafrockfit · 01/08/2023 09:42

If that's how you feel about bath bombs, then you don't need to make your own, in the first place.

Surely you can do without them entirely?

DH cooked sausages in the oven last night and there was about an inch of fat left in the baking dish.

Pocketfullofdogtreats · 01/08/2023 09:45

Admittedly, you could use a scraper thing to get rid of it. But you'd still have to wash that. Paper is easier.

Willmafrockfit · 01/08/2023 09:45

i put the roasting tin on the stove with bicarb soda or whatever its called, and water, and boil.

Ameanstreakamilewide · 01/08/2023 09:46

@00100001 The trouble with that is that cloths covered in cat wee, etc, have to be washed pronto, and I might not be ready to put some washing on for one cloth.

Kitchen roll for the win.🥇

GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER · 01/08/2023 09:46

Magazines, years ago now, after actually counting up the percentage of pages taken up with ads - over 70%.

Never wanted a big, expensive, space-hogging coffee machine - a cafetière is fine.

What do you do with what is left? The residue, poured down the drain, will still clog.

Zipps · 01/08/2023 09:50

Ooh these are good apart from the house insurance one!
I'm using up paper napkins left over from a party three years ago instead of kitchen roll at the moment. So that's another thing - party napkins.
Also stopped Christmas and birthday cards except for elderly relatives.

That fat gets solid when you leave it to cool down. I just scrap it into the bin?

Never bought branded products as they are the same as supermarket own but cost a lot more. It has saved me loads of money over the years.

There not actually quite the same, even if the ingredient list sounds similar.

I remember watching a documentary about it a few years back, and seen articles saying the same.
They may be made in the same factory and on the same machines.

However, the cheaper home brands often are made with a cheaper cut of meat, cheaper oils, inferior herbs, spices and vegetables, etc.
Whereas the branded one will often use a more expensive, higher quality version of the same ingredient.

The same machinery may be used but is completely cleaned down between the different batches and production runs, each going into their separated packaging.

This is usually the same principle with branded clothing - higher quality material usually used for higher quality brands, etc.

I've always had an iron and find it indispensable for shirts, especially in summer.

Well lucky for me I don't have any shirts 😂. I also don't sort the laundry out into different colours and whites. Just stick it all in. No ones died yet.

Ameanstreakamilewide · 01/08/2023 10:10

And no one will ever die if you don't separate the colours of your laundry, but there's a good reason that people do it.

Which you're obviously aware of, so I don't understand your sentiment here? 🤷🏻‍♀️

I've yet to find the reason because everything stays the colour it's meant to so why would I go through the hassle of separating. And the sentiment being that it's something else I do to save time..
